I mean I'm normally a 12 but I couldn't get my little toe in some of their size 12's, whereas other size 12's they sell fit fine, hmph!

The cheaper the clothes, the smaller the size! For example in Monsoon, you'd probably fit into size 10 jeans! YANBU to think it!

droopyxmastree · 13/04/2011 21:44

IME ther are 3 sizes of size 12.

The M & S size 12 (huge although not so huge since the recession)

The John Lewis size twelve (accurate I've found)

The Top shop 12 (microscopic and designed to freak you into being anorexic)

pinkstinks · 13/04/2011 21:45

Top shop makes me cry.
They make nothing for people with boobs.

jinglebelly · 13/04/2011 21:47

I can take an 8 in M&S! Karen Millen is also bad, Really really small on the bust for some random reason?!

Top shop comes up small. And inconsistent. MandS come up massive. Bizarrely Miss Selfridge seems to come up OK. Karen Millen is just rubbish.

LadyFannyofBumStreet · 13/04/2011 22:07

YANBU however, I once voiced a similar opinion to my sister who was working for the local Topshop at the time, and she said that their clothes are designed for females up to 22/23 years of age. Anyone older should really not be shopping there. I huffed and puffed but had to accept it and find an alternative store.

nijinsky · 13/04/2011 22:07

I can fit in the jeans. My problem is the shoulders. Why do so many shops make garments for people with tiny shoulders? They're massive everywhere else but you're so pinned in at the shoulders you would have to move without your arms stuck in one position out in front of you!

BooBooGlass · 13/04/2011 22:09

nijinsky, where are you shopping? I have teeny shoulders and am bloody swamped by everything I try on atm

nijinsky · 13/04/2011 22:13

Just about everywhere! Except sports clothes are usually ok. I mean, I can just get a bigger size, but then its obviously big everywhere else and looks stupid so my bloody arms still get pinned in! M&S and Zara particularly bad but its virulent!

anonymosity · 13/04/2011 23:19

Top shop is for teens and early 20's who are skinny and tiny. I remember being 16 and feeling shocked to see a grown woman in there trying things on. Then when I was one myself I would go in and get the same looks off teenagers. Who cares, though. If you can squeeze into them, great.

Reallyneedajob · 13/04/2011 23:46

Topshop is a 'skinny shop.' As I used to say to my mum when I was a teenager (and thought I was fat but now would kill to be the size I was back then!) and she suggested looking in there. "No mum, I can't go in there. It's a 'skinny shop.'"

PigeonMalteaserMadness · 13/04/2011 23:57

Topshop is like Superdry. DD and I are almost the same height but as she is eleven, she has tiny shoulders and no hips or boobs.

She isn't really thin, just has that slighter build that only very young women and Kate Moss have. I haven't been able to wear anything from Topshop since I was fourteen for that reason.

MollysChambers · 14/04/2011 00:01

Stopped going in to Top Shop before I hit 20. Not designed to accomodate hips or boobs.

I found topshop to be quite generous with sizes of jeans...am recently into a ten there and was delighted as I was a 12 pre dd2,but my sister who is young and skinny told me that "everyone knows that topshop are making their clothes 'fatter' now".out went my new confidence boost....but now you've all said they are small, maybe I really am a ten...?

sleepdodger · 14/04/2011 01:29

Was wearing ts mat Leigh jeans size 12
bought non mat ones today ....16!!! Blush I accept that post baby I'll be bigger but honestly tiny!! Ho hum noone else sees the label & I'm a 12 elsewhere still

Bit0fFunnyBunny · 14/04/2011 02:29

If you try to shop in places designed for trendy teenagers, you have to accept that they want their stuff to be seen on lithe young things, not thirty-something mothers. Their sizing will reflect that.

ifancyashandy · 14/04/2011 06:08

Am 40 something, size 12 in most things but tall with boobs. Can get in size 10 skinnies in Top Shop. Dresses and tops etc am a 12 in there though. Never felt like I 'shouldn't' shop in there and never got dodgy looks. But am London so maybe us 'oldens' are more usual to find in there?

noodle69 · 14/04/2011 06:19

I agree with messymammy they proper vanity size in topshop. I have size 6/8 jeans/skirts/dresses from everywhere else but I bought size 4 in topshop. They make their sizes loads bigger nowadays. I bought size 8 jeans in their in 98 and I am the same size and weight/height and now I have bought size 4. My mum has said the same thing.

MumdiddyMum · 14/04/2011 06:48

I am a 12 top. I tried on a top in Vestry and it was far too small. I asked if they did a bigger size and they said no (I think it was a L)

IMAGINE!!! size 12 and I am too fat for them! Mortified lol

jinglebelly · 16/04/2011 17:08

I actually measured their jeans as it bothered me so much and their size 10's measure as size 8's (W26) and 12's measure as 10's (W28).

Shoddily made overpriced trying to scrimp on fabric perhaps?

Abcinthia · 16/04/2011 17:11

I have the same problem in Top Shop. The trousers never fit (I'm a size 10-12) and if I want to buy a top I have to buy a massive size or it won't fit over my boobs lol

ChairOfTheBored · 16/04/2011 18:49

YANBU - I swear their designers have an aversion to hips. Or at least mine. I'm an 8 on a good day, but am buggered if I get my my thighs into a pair of their jeans in anything under a 14...

GloriaSmut · 16/04/2011 18:55

"Top shop is for teens and early 20's who are skinny and tiny"

I hadn't realised I was supposed to stop being skinny now that I'm positively ancient but there you go. Best eat more buns so that I can be appropriately sized for my antiquity.

I did have an ishoo in White Stuff today though. Found a rather nice pair of cropped trousers and took the 10 (which would normally come up quite loose) into the changing room. Couldn't get into the sodding trousers so asked for a 12. Which, as I'd expect, had room for at least one other person in them. Sales person said I'd clearly got a "dodgy 10" first time round and I should try on all the other pairs. I declined since I hadn't planned to spend the whole day in a changing room wrestling with "dodgy tens".

springbokdoc · 16/04/2011 20:36

I went into a shop (think it was Oasis but not 100% sure) and asked if they had a size 12 in some normal trousers. Told by snooty shop assistant that they didn't do plus sizes to only went to 10. Since when has a 12 been plus size!! I was mortified and felt very podgy the rest of the day.
