Only popped in because it's DS's birthday next week and someone told me they sell big bags of balloons in there.

Get a pack, and approach the till area with DD (who is 7). On the till end, in clear view to everyone queing, is a display of Condoms and pink vibrating 'love-rings' - cock rings I suppose they would be better known as.

The pinkness of the boxes they are in and the word 'ring' catches DDs attention and she wants to know what they are for. There was definite sniggering from the couple behind us as I struggled to find the right words. I told her they were for grown ups to wear, which wasn't a lie, but she kept pressing me on it and I had to tell her to be quiet in the end.

DD is totally clueless about sex, but even if she weren't, I still don't think I'd like to have to explain what they are for.

I am no prude - but am I right to be angry about the fact that Poundland display them in such a prominent position, exactly where the sweets would normally be? It's wrong on so many levels IMO. I will be writing to them tomorrow.

I wonder if they will expand the range.

Poundland rubber fists?

That's a whole lot of rubber for a quid.

There is far too much out there that children have to see and hear and it is totally unnecessary. Totally unnecessary. I saw some things clearly displayed in a local market yesterday and was left thinking thank heavens I didn't have the children with me and how on earth do I explain what that what the clothes were depicting should not let them feel bad about themselves and the type of people they will hopefully grow up to be.Before you ask yes they were sexually explicit and depicted females in a very derogatory way. You didn't have to be able to read they were big and bold so you could not avoid them and it was all too clear.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/01/2011 22:10

maybe they shouldnt stock them at all? they arent exactly an essential part of sex, more something that belongs with other adult toys.

Newgolddream · 23/01/2011 22:11

FaffTastic "Who buys these JLS condoms?? Am morbidly fascinated as to why anyone who is old enough to be having sex would want a packet of condoms with the faces of JLS on the box"

Oh the box.... thank god for that, I thought the pictures of JLS might be imprinted onto the condoms lol.

ReclaimingMyInnerPeachy · 23/01/2011 22:13

I think when it comes to not stocking them at all, poundland would argue that it's a shop making profit not guardian of morals.

Ziggiz sexually explicit clothing- do you eman showing semi porn type images? If so I say for the third time that is not the same at all. but you'll have to read my post further down to see why i think that as I typed it twice tonight.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 23/01/2011 22:14

And you get to see all 4 of the 'lovely' boys emerging one by one as you unroll the condom?

God, that would put you right off, wouldn't it?!

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 23/01/2011 22:17

So if it's not a guardian of morals, then why shouldn't it stock porn? Where should it draw the line? If it sells, then should it stock it?

mutznutz · 23/01/2011 22:19

There are cock rings, condoms and lubes all over the front counter of my local pharmacy...can't say I've ever thought about it really.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 23/01/2011 22:19

they could argue that peachy - would be a shame to put profit over morals. I guess thats the same argument that sellers of lads mags use too.

ReclaimingMyInnerPeachy · 23/01/2011 22:20

I strongly suspect that they do not stock porn becuase they do not stock magazines.

I;d like to think it's because they recognise the inherent mysogyny, I doubt it.

ReclaimingMyInnerPeachy · 23/01/2011 22:21

OYBK I guess it probably is, though I would disagree with them of course.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 23/01/2011 22:21

That's because it's a pharmacy, you kind of expect to see them there. Well, not so much cock rings, but then Durex probably don't give the retailers much say in the matter.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 23/01/2011 22:23

They stock books though Peachy - and DVDs. Not sure I'd like to see porn in amongst that just because it sells and some customers want to use it as part of their healthy relationship blah blah bleurgh

ReclaimingMyInnerPeachy · 23/01/2011 22:25

Ah magazines is different in terms of marketing etc- all to do with the racks and the publishers buy space - poundland woudln;t go there.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 23/01/2011 22:28

How would you feel about them stocking porn books and DVDs?

ReclaimingMyInnerPeachy · 23/01/2011 22:31

Anti- but I have expl, ained twice what I see to be the difference Maisie

I perhaps know too much about the pron industry: I have a good friend in hiidng in a DV house as her H just got out of prioson for related offences. I could never view porn as the smaeme as a couple of adults having a giggle of a Sunday morning when grandma has the kids.

And I said I think THEY woudl say they think they are the moral guardians not that I thought that was the way it should be. I suspect poundland and I have very diffferent views on many things tbh.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 23/01/2011 22:38

I know you explained, and tbh I agree completely with you on porn. However, I honestly don't see why it should be acceptable for family orientated shops to sell cock rings, but not porn or other sex toys.

tallwivglasses · 23/01/2011 22:40

I am scared to google 'reusable condoms' Shock

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 23/01/2011 22:40

Dh has just come downstairs waving a pink box at me. I wonder what it could be? Perhaps he's bought me a new ring with a lovely big diamond in it!

Off to bed now, night night Grin

DayShiftDoris · 23/01/2011 22:42

Considering that the balloons from poundland are so shit that they burst as you blow them up would you seriously trust a pack of 3 johnnies for a quid??

Me... I think I'll invest a little more of my pennies on no more kiddies!!

Have to say tho... cock rings??? I mean why? No bloody need? I have enough to explain with questions like 'How long is 5 minutes?' without cock rings!

ReclaimingMyInnerPeachy · 23/01/2011 22:42

Dont have a problem with other sex toys if in boxes with no writing as OP said this was

spongebobsquareknickers · 23/01/2011 22:51

(wonders if anyone has actually bought the JLS condoms and knows for sure that they're not actually ON the condom..........)

Grin
Binfullofmaggotsonthe45 · 23/01/2011 22:54

Hmmm perhaps it's a campaign to drive up business...

Cock rings enhance and encourage sexual activity
Old condoms don't work...resulting in....
Extra pregnancies driving down the amount of disposable income...encouraging you to keep shopping at pound land....
More child customers demanding multipacks of party balloons and maxi packs of cadbury's fingers.....

It's the circle of life! And profit!

Clever buggars!
