To hate the Scottish attitude towards alcohol?

Yulephemia · 21/12/2010 14:27

I hate that so many people think you can't have a good night out without getting absolutely bladdered.

The bullying, nasty nature of people who say "You don't know how to enjoy yourself" because someone just wants to have a few drinks then go home, rather than getting pie-eyed, flirting with the boss then flirting and dancing with complete strangers in a karaoke bar?

I end up avoiding nights out with these people, as they're just narrow-minded idiots. Such a shame we can't have a healthier attitude to alcohol in this country!

Xmas Angry

Why is this just the Scottish attitude? Have you ever been to Newcastle?

Iklboo · 21/12/2010 14:28

Any more tar to go with that brush?

redrobin · 21/12/2010 14:29

think that opening statement verges on the racist! alcohol abuse does not end at the border, believe me.

DylthanThroughTheSnow · 21/12/2010 14:30

Yeah because it's just the Scottish that have this attitude Hmm

southeastastra · 21/12/2010 14:31

we have this attitude too in hertfordshire Wink

JeelyPiece · 21/12/2010 14:31

YABU, I've never seen this attitude other than in the odd individual and I live in Scotland/am Scottish. Do you think people only drink a lot here, have you never seen one of those Boozed Up Britain type programmes? You get idiots everywhere unfortunately.

TandB · 21/12/2010 14:31

It's not exactly just a Scottish issue. Nor a Geordie issue, for that matter.

Have you ever been to London? Liverpool? Nottingham? Hay-on-wye? Any other random place that we care to name?

BusyMisstletoeIzzy · 21/12/2010 14:32

Scottish? Hmm

Yulephemia · 21/12/2010 14:33

I'm only speaking about what I know, as I am Scottish and live in Scotland. I can't speak for other areas of the UK.

saffy85 · 21/12/2010 14:33

My mum gets this alot as a tee totaller. We live Daaan Sarf though not Scotland. Ironically she's scottish Hmm

YABU btw OP just for stereotyping. Go to any pub in any city in GB and announce you're only having 1 or 2 drinks and dozens of different accents will shout "lighten up! have another! you stuffy spoilsport!"

TheParasiteofChristmasPast · 21/12/2010 14:34

the op is scottish and rightly worried about the national attitude to drink. loosen up.

jessiealbright · 21/12/2010 14:34

It's English, too. I assume you're saying "Scottish" because you're in Scotland and you didn't want to impugn the other bits of the UK without evidence, though.

MsElleToe · 21/12/2010 14:34

Have you ever been out in any town or city in England, Scotland, Ireland or Wales.......binge drinking occurs in mkost parts.

Might have been better to ask IAMBU to think getting drunk is not a prerequisite to a good time?

Even though there are times when it is a prerequisite.............god awful work Xmas do's spring to mind Grin

jessiealbright · 21/12/2010 14:36

Ah, x-posts.

Honestly MNers.

If someone had done the same thread, but substituting the word "English" for "Scottish", would anyone have said anything?

Yulephemia · 21/12/2010 14:37

Jessie, exactly my point: my experience of this is my family, my colleagues, and what I hear about via the media in terms of alcohol-related crimes and incidents in Scotland.

I apologise if I am offending anyone by restricting this to Scotland: it makes me even sadder to hear the issue is more widespread than I realised!

DylthanThroughTheSnow · 21/12/2010 14:37

Why don't you go all the way:

Why can't people in Scotland not eat anything other than deep fried mars bars?

Why do Scottish men only wear kilts and no underwear? Will no-one think of the poor Scottish mens bollocks Sad

You do know your being ridicules and stereotyping massively don't you op

TheParasiteofChristmasPast · 21/12/2010 14:38

denying scottish societ has a problem with alcohol is ridiculou

LetThereBeRock · 21/12/2010 14:39

YABU to think it's only a Scottish problem. I'm truly amazed that you've never heard that this attitude is also common across the UK.

MumNWLondon · 21/12/2010 14:40

Yes, it's the British attitude (I say this as a Scot living in London, and having been to university in the north of England) and its very worrying.

LetThereBeRock · 21/12/2010 14:40

I don't think anyone is denying that,Christmaspast. Only that it's not exclusive to Scotland.

DylthanThroughTheSnow · 21/12/2010 14:40

I'm not denying that Scottish society have a problem all I'm saying is it's a British problem not a solely Scottish one.

JeelyPiece · 21/12/2010 14:41

Nobody is denying there is a problem with excessive alcohol consumption, they are just pointing out it is not specifically linked to being Scottish so that is not a relevant part of the discussion. You could discuss why it seems worse in some countries (UK, Finland, Russia) than others (France, Spain, not that there aren't excessive drinkers there).

Pantofino · 21/12/2010 14:41

I have this attitude! And I am abroad, don't you know! Xmas Wink

FanjoForTheMincePies · 21/12/2010 14:42

yes, English people never go out and get drunk of an evening... Hmm

Yulephemia · 21/12/2010 14:44

People flaming me seem to be harbouring under the misapprehension that I am not Scottish. Xmas Confused As I said above, I am Scottish and I live in Scotland and I am commenting on my experience! What the heck is all that about kilts and Mars Bars? Xmas Hmm

I've lived around this appalling attitude to alcohol my whole life: are you saying it doesn't exist? I think we have a real problem as a nation with alcohol and the wider issue of attitudes towards health and personal responsibility.

There's some very nasty stuff going on in my workplace at the moment as a result of someone getting rat-arsed at the Christmas party and absolutely tearing into one of our colleagues for being boring because he didn't want to drink himself into a stupour. I think that's disgusting. This is someone who behaves like this regularly, and completely judges anyone who won't behave like her.
