To hate the Scottish attitude towards alcohol?

I hate that so many people think you can't have a good night out without getting absolutely bladdered.

The bullying, nasty nature of people who say "You don't know how to enjoy yourself" because someone just wants to have a few drinks then go home, rather than getting pie-eyed, flirting with the boss then flirting and dancing with complete strangers in a karaoke bar?

I end up avoiding nights out with these people, as they're just narrow-minded idiots. Such a shame we can't have a healthier attitude to alcohol in this country!

The OP's focus is the work colleagues putting pressure on her and everyone else to drink excessively, as if that's the only way to have a good time.

The fact that they're Scottish or British isn't that relevent.

DylthanThroughTheSnow · 21/12/2010 15:56

I agree I think alcholism is worse in Scotland where as binge drinking is uk wide and as the op was referring to her collegues binge drinking I feel that should be what the discussion is about.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 21/12/2010 15:57

She's talking about having a healthier relationship to alcohol in this country ie Scotland. When you look at the figures for Scotland, they hardly show a country with a healthy attitude to alcohol compared to the rest of Europe, and it's still less healthy compared to the rest of the UK. It's still seen as a bit of a joke, which makes me really sad - we just don't seem to realise how serious the issue is.

Scotland have higher rates of depression and suicide alcoholism I feel is related to that.

That's an entirely diffrent problem to the binge drinking attitude the op was referring to. That attitude us uk wide. Do you honestly believe your children will be surrounded by a diffrent attitude to drink if they wern't in Scotland?

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 21/12/2010 16:13

It wouldn't be completely different no, but the amount of alcohol we drink per head is something like 23 units a week compared to 19 in England and Wales (which isn't an issue for me as I don't live there). The appalling figures for liver disease, alcohol related deaths etc are facts - nothing to do with Scotland bashing. It's time to face facts and so something about it - hopefully the Scottish Govt can really move this agenda forward.
