Buy DS1 toys - as in figures and playsets.

DP says he is too old for them but I know he will enjoy playing with them.

i mean such as pirates of the caribbean playsets and lego

How old is he?

DS is 10, and is after some more Playmobil for Christmas. He spends hours playing with his cars, too (we have the World's Largest Collection).

What is he 11 or 12?
I think if he will happily play with them then get them for him he is still young enough to play with toys...my dh still plays with wrestling figures he does play with dss though but that is a total excuse.

Anyway you could come from the angle (after a quick nosey at your profile) you have a younger ds to keep them for as well so it is not a waste if he decided fairly quickly that he has outgrown them.

He is 12 but enjoys his lego and themed playsets.

how old is he?

Not sure if that makes a difference as you know your child and know what he likes. Playsets are good for using the imagination and my 20 year old loves playing with his 8 year old sisters lego (which is actually his passed down)

However, variety in the type of toys a child has is good and will encourage them to play and learn new/different things.

HAHA INEED, I remember DS1's sperm donor father wanting a train set for his birthday - "to play with DS with it" ok thats why it had to be bought before DS1 was even born!!! - 8 weeks before!

Depends - are you buying these things instead of other things he's asking for - electronics/video games/books etc? If so, maybe there's some room for compromise?

Thing is, in a year's time the chances are that your ds will have a fit of the puberties and refuse to admit liking all that stuff. He will spend his time in his room listening to The Smiths and writing dreadful poetry (or whatever the young people do these days )

In the meantime though, he'll have had many hours pleasure from the playsets. Stop giving them to him when he wants you to stop giving them to him, let him grow up in his own time.

DS1 is 13. He bought some Halo Lego a few weeks back

I am also buying him a psp and some games, guitar hero for his ps2 and possibly a laptop for homework...but thats a huge possibly!

Although as Strawberry says, if it's instead of other things he's covetting (like a Walkman an MP3 player - see I'm not entirely stuck in the 80s!) then maybe it's time to (sniff) move on.

In that case Lady, YANBU. It'll give him something else to do when you're driven mad by Guitar Hero and have to haul him off it for a bit of peace and quiet.

I bought DH a lego kit for his stocking - he loves playing with DS's megabricks so i thought it would be nice to have his own

DH would happily play with lego for hours and he's 37.

When I was growing up, I was always thrilled when my younger brother (by five years) was given a big lego set for a gift as I could "help" him contruct it. Of course I would have never dreamed of asking for such a childish gift myself.

i'm 49 and I love Lego, so does DH. In fact I secretly by dd some so I can help too. Luckily she's quite happy with this arrangement!

The best legislation for older children is lego mindstorm, expensive but worth it. They even use it at Ds,s school for 6th form electronics club
