DD appears to be allergic to her own poo

It doesn't happen all the time, but at least 3 times a week. She does a poo and her bottom instantly comes up a bright red sunburn type rash, which is very painful to clean. Could this be a reaction to foods she is eating? If so, what do I do? Should I keep a food diary and see if there's an correlations or take her to the doctors? TIA.

how old is your dd

ledodgy · 14/11/2008 11:12

I bet it's when she eats something tomato based this has happened with all three of mine.

CharCharGabor · 14/11/2008 11:17

sorry she's 15 months. She doesn't eat raw tomatoes as she got a rash round her mouth from eating them, but she does eat chopped tomatoes in food. Do you think it's probably that then? That would be a disaster as I use them loads. It's not always after eating tomatoes though.

Do you give her weetabix - this happenes to DS when he eats it?

ledodgy · 14/11/2008 11:19

Raw tomatoes did the same to my three's faces as well and cooked did this to their bottoms. I still give them it tbh but just make sure I sudocrem them well. They do grow out of it.

debzmb62 · 14/11/2008 11:24

sometime it can be in food but it could well be her teeth coming through it sometime does this if it carries on speak to your hv as i think if it was a allergie of sort it would.nt just be 3 times a week so i,m guessing teething maybe back one's ?again maybe have a word with hv for advice i,m se its common

soapbox · 14/11/2008 11:34

Agree with Ledodgy - tomatoes and any other red fruits used to cause this problem for my DS. This includes strawberries, raspberries, blue berries etc.

You need to cut them out completely for the diet for a while.

karise · 14/11/2008 12:30

How about too much apple juice?
I agree with the teeth thing too!

MoChan · 14/11/2008 12:46

My daughter has had this kind of thing, off and on, and I've always associated it with periods of teething, although I suppose it could be food related.

It hasn't happened for a while now though (she's cut a majority of her teeth, really, there are now only a couple of gaps) and I can't think that her diet has changed much in the meantime.

Ds1 had the same with tomatoes, esp if he was teething at the time. I gave them only rarely til 18 months, by which time he'd grown out of it.

CharCharGabor · 14/11/2008 21:52

Thanks everyone. She doesn't have weetabix or apple juice, but does eat raisin wheats for breakfast. She is teething about 6/8 teeth atm. Sudocrem doesn't even touch the rash, I have to use timodene which I got on prescription. I haven't used tomatoes this week though and she's still had a reaction. Do you think I should do a food diary to see if I can pinpoint anything? This would be an absolute disaster as tomatoes are my main base for meals and I can't afford not to use them.

My vote is for teething. The acid from the saliva affects the bottom end.

VaginaShmergina · 14/11/2008 21:57

Hi there, I am not clued up on the food allergy thing but can recommend a good cream for sore bottoms. Its called Metanium, its a very thick yellow cream in a tube and worked a treat on my two. Teeth was the only factor with my DC's.

Good luck with eliminating foods and working this out.

RiojaLover75 · 14/11/2008 21:58

Try Metanium cream, it's excellent for sore bums.

RiojaLover75 · 14/11/2008 21:59

Oooo Vag. Snap!!!

CharCharGabor · 14/11/2008 21:59

I usually use that VS, but this rash is just so angry that it doesn't work. It is my favourite cream though, works on everything else.

Thing is, if it's teething, why hasn't she got it every day? She's teething like mad all the time atm.

Bloody wonderful stuff Rioja..... my MW told me when DD was a newborn, "Top tip, if any of your children ever get sore bums, use Metanium" She even wrote it in my DD red book so the first time I got a sore bum I went and got it

VaginaShmergina · 14/11/2008 22:01

CCG, have you spoken to your HV or GP ?

Notreallycutoutforthis · 14/11/2008 22:04

Heard a fab tip from a friend who's DD had appalling rash which wasn't healing. Her MW said to paint the broken skin with eggwhite - old trick for creating a 2nd skin to protect while it heals. Worth a go?

CharCharGabor · 14/11/2008 22:11

I haven't spoken to anyone yet as I hadn't made the connection between food possibly and the rash. I just thought I'd been neglectful and missed her pooing. But apparently I was wrong, thank God! I might try the egg white although the rash has improved slightly now. Thanks

VaginaShmergina · 14/11/2008 22:13

I have head that one too, however you paint the egg white on and leave the nappy off Follow along behind with a pooper scooper

CharCharGabor · 14/11/2008 22:15

Yeah that's the only problem with toddlers They won't just lie still with it on. lol at pooper scooper!

OP posts:
Bluebutterfly · 14/11/2008 22:23

If her nappy is quite wet when she poos it could be a reaction to the urine and poo mixing - and would explain why she only gets the rash sometimes - have you noticed whether her nappy is quite wet (as well as dirty) on the occasions when she get a bad rash?

Otherwise I agree that tomatoes and other acidic foods can also aggravate nappy rash... worth cutting out tomatoes for a week or two and seeing if her bottom stays rash-free.

CharCharGabor · 14/11/2008 22:26

I'm not sure tbh, I don't think it's always really wet but she is a heavy wetter so it wouldn't take much! I'll keep an eye on that. Looks like I'll be cooking separate meals for the next week or so then. Can't afford not to use my twelve tins of chopped tomatoes.
