Welcome back to everyone who spent the day at Dyson HQ talking about allergies - hope you had a fun, interesting and useful day .

Please can you use this thread to post your feedback about the day - including anything new you learnt about allergies and how you can control them, your dust busting tips, how you are finding your new Dyson Allergy vac, what feedback you had from the Dyson microbiologists on the dust sample you took with you, and anything else you think other Mumsnetters with allergies in their family may find useful.

If you didn't attend the day but have questions for our new allergy-specialist Mumsnetters or for Dyson, please feel free to post them here too and we'll do our best to get them answered.

Thanks, MNHQ

Hi all

Just like to echo everyone else and say what a great day it was.

They are an enthusiastic and very friendly bunch at dyson - and all sooo good looking too....

Learning that cats and dogs sweat and its this some people are allergic to (not the hair) was an eye opener for me.

They have a test room for everything - sound, magnetic fields ect...as well as testing the cleaner (remember swear box for saying hoover!) on different types of carpet and flooring....they even have poor george running outside to bash the carpet manually in between tests

I didn't have my dust tested - It didn't make the grade apparently....is that a compliment or not? (I obviously have designer dust...sorry private joke )

I heart the hand drier and want desperately begging dyson to install one in my bathroom

I spent yesterday vigerously vacuuming each carpet all over ten times in each spot - I may have conquered the allergies but I now have the beginings of OCD. Those dust mites are horrble things that made me itch. I think ive killed any that were lurking...

In every room we entered, Cods words were going round in my head. I was saying 'here we go this is the assult course' Thank goodnes there wasn't one... phew.

All in all it was a great day. Meeting other netters was great and I thank mnhq for choosing me and for dyson for being great people.

CostaRicanCod · 11/09/2008 10:23

there is an asault course
for hoovers
di doyu realy not see it?

DesperateTooDyson · 11/09/2008 10:45

Yes, thanks cod.

I wore all my lycra ready for the assault course too

I'm not sure why, but all my friends are now more interested in the male satff at Dyson rather than the vacuum

GotNoDyson · 11/09/2008 13:27

By the way, in case you didn't realise ... I do talk very much sometimes

James was in "America" when we went. We got to see his office toys though

AnnMumsnet · 11/09/2008 13:31

Glad you all had a good time, now can you let me know what your usual MN nickname is seeing as you've all gone Dyson mad! I'd like to check whose provided feedback who hasn't get! Thanks

GeorgeTheCarpetThrasher · 11/09/2008 13:35

not many folk can claim they've played with James Dyson's toy

GeorgeTheCarpetThrasher · 11/09/2008 13:38

I'm elesbells

GotNoDyson · 11/09/2008 13:47

LOL, Ann, I'm the only one without the Dyson yet

AnnMumsnet · 11/09/2008 13:50

gotnodyson, I can - kind of tell that from your name - come on, who ARE you?

callmemitey · 11/09/2008 14:00

I am callmeovercautious.

I have been intensively vacuuming the hall this Morning. I fell in love with the dusting tool when I ranit over the radiator and it removed all the dust from the bottom - you know where they go in and out? I usually have to get a damp cloth to them.

Then DD wanted it to play with and did a great job of the skirting boards whilst I cleaned some more carpet

I also tried the mattress tool on our big footstoll - it really does look much cleaner - although you can now see the srayon marks the dirt had been hiding

The handle is a little bit short for me though - but then I am nearly 6' and I suppose a little taller than your average vacuum user. Perhaps they could offer an extension in the accessories range?

Also impressed by the fact that most accessories are available with different attachments so can be used with most other models. The Duster and matress tool will both fit my old DC02 as well. Good news if you have an old model lurking about and still want the attachments. I think the turbine heads only fit certain models though so you would need to check before you bought them.

Any sign of yours yet GotNoDyson?

callmemitey · 11/09/2008 14:01

Sorry for the terrible spelling - my keyboard needs a dust

DesperateTooDyson · 11/09/2008 14:03

Ann, I'm desperatehousewifetoo - obvious really.

'James'' toys needed a good clean though, they were very grubby

TheOldestCatHairsInTheCyclone · 11/09/2008 15:38

Ann, I'm TheOldestCat usually - you'd probably guessed that though...

Good idea to vacuum the footstool, callme! Must do that.

CostaRicanCod · 11/09/2008 15:41

are your flexes too short ?

TheOldestCatHairsInTheCyclone · 11/09/2008 15:47

My flex is perfectly long thanks.

Or maybe it's just because my flat is too small?

CamillaDyson · 11/09/2008 16:37

Cod - I've got my eye on you!!

They weren't given the same machine as you and because of your short lead abuse, the lovely Tom has left us and gone to work for Dyson in Malaysia.

Not sure if it was the MN experience that pushed him...but he's not in the UK anymore!

misdee · 11/09/2008 16:47

thanks for the cat/dog tip. we are laying new carpets upstairs to tackle some of the problems, i have a dyson allergy amachine already so will be vacumming the boadrs before they lay the new carpet down. already knew about it being the dander bheing the main culprit with allergies to cats/dogs and not the fur.

yes you can get DLA for allergy reletae d stuff. two of my dd's got it for a while, but now dont as they have gotton better over the years (except now dd1 may have to go back onto it after her peanut butter incident yesterday). i am ignoring on purpose dd2 allergy relatred snuffles right now and pretending i cant hear them lol.

I like the tips about intense vacumming, will be doing that as well.

did u get any curtain tips at all?

[sorry for intruding, but this stuff is fascinating for me]

callmemitey · 11/09/2008 17:27

Not intruding at all we are on MN service you know

Curtains - use nets to block out allergens and pollen. Wash them and the curtains regularly. Nets at at least 60oC for 30 minutes. That kills the dustmites. Not sure you can do that with curtains. Mine are washable but only at 30oC. I suppose you can vacuum them, you could get the DC to stand on a corner each and help.

GotNoDyson · 11/09/2008 19:50

Ann...I am VVVQV but am supposed to be on a break... I thought you'd be aware of my appropriate namechange because I cc'd MNHQ in on my email to Camilla and Sarah.

I'm here because of my committment to Dyson and you guys.......(well, they are paying me after all )

Lovely Sarah assures me that my Dyson should be here on Friday/tomorrow.

Perhaps Camilla and Sarah could ask one of the lovely chaps we met to hand deliver it to me, you know, to ensure it gets here okay ......?

GotNoDyson · 11/09/2008 19:54

Oh yes - I was rather surprised at the recommendation of net curtains. I dont much like them, and always found them to be dust magnets.

Mind you, I was always put off because my mum always had them and they always reeked of stale cigarette smoke because of her smoking, despite her washing them regularly.

TheOldestCatHairsInTheCyclone · 11/09/2008 20:06

Oooh I hope you do get your dyson personally delivered!

DesperateTooDyson · 11/09/2008 20:26

If george delivers it, perhaps you could get him to bash your carpets whilst he is there

callmemitey · 11/09/2008 20:40

I think George would be a bit of a dissapointment to GotNoDyson

How did your meeting go Desperate? Was there some tape measuring involved?

GotNoDyson · 11/09/2008 20:51

Why do you say that mitey???

I preferred the first guy we saw, Will, was it?
