What do you do when your child reacts to every single suncream out there?

cos dd1 has reacted to the one she used last year (proderm moose), a long list of others over the years, but is spending loads of time outside exposed to the sun.

what can we use?

I really rave about Ultrasun - its a clear once a day that isn't thick and sticky. We don't have an allergies to sunscreen as such but all have eczema, dodgy skin, I have psoriasis etc and it suits all of us. They are ultrasun.co.uk. I wonder if they do a sample size? I love the stuff we are in usa and I ship it - the once a day ness really works - its hot here and we have an outdoor summer lifestyle

I rarely use suncream on the kids. I just make sure they're covered up, they wear hats and they're not in the midday sun long enough for it to be a problem. We always sit in the shade too.

I think suncream is over rated. There are other ways. I also think it can be bad because it encourages people to stay out too long by hiding the signals which one would normally feel.

have you tried the one the GPs prescribe? is it a ROC one (can't remember but someone was talking about it the other day)

We use the baby Aveeno one. No problems with it.

My dd is also allerci to most suncream but the aveeno one is working no rashes at all.

Somebody recommended the Dr Hauschka one on here the other day - ought to be pretty gentle (although only spf22).

We use uvistat. Just to remind you -those with eczema are entitled to suncreams on prescription.

my ds has excema and reacts to all except proderm which is now called bergaderm.It comes in a blue mousse tin with orange lid,I get it in waitrose.

right, will see GP at next oppertunity to ask about ROC. last time i asked about sun cream they just told me to keep her out of the sun. fat chance!!

I too have tried everything and they all bring my little boy out in excema or rashes. The only one that I have found to be ok is organic

Neals Yard one, smells gorgeous and my sensitive little one has not reacted. SPF22 is plenty as long as you keep applying it. If you are near a shop they will give you a sample. Would imagine if you aren't and phoned them they would send one out.

we tried loads befor i went to gp, they gave ds roc, and its great no rashers but it is thich white stuff

There a few available on prescription- but uvistat is the only one we can use. Ask your pharmacist for a list of prescription brands then you can find out which you think might suit your child or look up the BNF website. Then go to GP and say you would like it on prescription!

I'm guessing you've tried Simple and Neutrogena already? I've always struggled with suncreams for myself, but these are the two that I seem to be ok with.

Uvistat

They will all automatically be over factor 15- anything less in non-prescribable. If you want the active ingredients then look up the BNF website, but you do need to log in. HTH

Misdee - do you think maybe it's not the suncream but the sun itself? I get something called poly-morphic light eruption, basically a sun senstivity thing. It's worse after the first few exposures and then gradually improves. You need to use a cream with a very high UVA rating, I take a daily anti-histamine too. Google it and have a read.

THe uvistat we get is fragrance free- which does not appear to be listed- nice GP and nice pharmacist i suppose!!

A couple of the mums at dancing had the same problem - one of them recommended Liz Earle, as her daughter had bad eczema and this didn't cause he to flare up?

Yes try uvistat (£1.99 in our cheap shop) it was the only one that my DD could use in the end, that was after trying the ones the dr's said to try.
