May I weep a bit here about DS's new test results? :-(

Well, the title says it all, I'm feeling pretty miserable, we have just had a call from the doctor to tell us about the latest allergy tests of DS. Forget about nuts allergies, as we have already assumed the idea of one. DS had intolerance tests which I hoped were not very accurate, now, with the new diagnosis, my hopes have just gone down. Apart of being intolerant to most things all people eat, now we know that he is also allergic to more things. I'm stressed just to feed him as I never know if he is going to react badly to something he was oK with a couple of weeks ago, he is having reactions to food he had always being fine with .

The doctor has also said that DS has anemia, we have tried to avoid many foods that cause reactions that obviously he has started missing up in nutrition, and there's no way we can get an appointment short term with a dietitian or anybody who can throw some light in how to feed him well. I'm very sad, I know lost of people are far worse than he in terms of allergies but I can't stop feeling bad about what he is going through.

He is going to be 3 in february, technically speaking he is not intolerant to millet, barley, apricot, cranberry, mushrooms, spinach, string beans, meats, some herbs and that's it... How am I supposed to feed him a nutritive diet with so little options?

Appologies if I sounded a bit OTT in your thread Meggymoo, I have gone through months of frustration trying to help DS. I so much wish I culd go back in time and avoidng nuts, DS had the first reaction that involved breathing problems last Wednesday (before then was just a heavy rash). I'm scared and feel frustrated at not being able to make things better for him.

Sorry to hear your problems, Chandra.

If ds is not allergic to meat, then you've got no problem with anaemia. Red meat is a good source of iron.

That's what I thought, we don't eat red meat in a daily basis, but we do, so I thought he was going to be OK but unfortunately the lab tests show that he definitively has it.

Did the doctor suggest giving him an iron supplement?

He is going to fax us the results tomorrow and we are having a "meeting" on the telephone on Wednesday, he mentioned about suplements and said he would be more specific on Wednesday.

Thank you for your messages. I have just had a good "weeping" over the telephone with my mother, I feel a bit better. Thanks

(masochist me? nah [sarcastic emoticon]) No, I just feel very frustrated because having taking so many measures to insure DS is OK, it seems it's not working. I suppose I only need a good pat on the back and being told that everything is going to be fine... sigh...

ds1 wouldnt eat apricots millet, red meat beans or all that if you paid him.
I am sure when its day on day it a lot worse though!

I am sure it will. DS was allergic to lots of things for three years.Now we just have to watch out for eggs. It is very frustrating and especially when you see other children being able to eat what they want and you just want to give your child anything without having to go around with your little tuppers with your own food. DS is still much smaller than others his age he is probably the size of a two year old but he is happy and he will catch up eventually.
If you have private medical insurance are you able to get referred privately. Good luck, hope you feel better soon.

Chandra - after a spell of getting DS's allergies more or less under control we have entered another phase with severe contact allergy round his mouth and raw, sore weeping eyes. We've no idea what it is this time- so back off down teh testing route for us too!

We've never had a respitory respose with DS, but have with DD, and it is very frightening isn't it

Chandra - have you tried the Terrance Stamp range of foods from Sainsburies?

They tend to avoid the major allergens so it is possible you would be able to find some of the range that would suit your DS. I think they do millet bread for example.

Thanks Meggymoo. Yes, apparently they get better with time, ie. DS's eczema is much better, asthma seemed better but he is having a relapse and he is becoming allergic to more things than he was so I don't know what is the balance between the things he is getting less allergic to and the allergies he seems to be getting. But I so much hope some day in the future we don't need to worry so much about these things.

Just in case it was not enough, one of my dogs also has allergies (isn't my life pure surrealism?), I also have to cook special food for her because otherwise she ends up having a bad time. DS's results also shown that he is allergic to dogs, so the dogs have to leave. I'm really sad about it too, for many years we thought we were not able to have children so the dogs were my "substitute" to babies for a long time, so it breaks my heart to let them go, specially as I know that is difficult that the allergic one gets rehomed (she's lots of work and she really gets very ill if the diet is not followed) and I'm afraid she will end up being put to sleep

He has a grade 2 intolerance to potatoes and rice, so they affect them BUT we are allowed to use them once a week. The main problem with carbohidrates is that even using the once of low level intolerance once a week I only manage to cover 3-4 days of the week. The doctor mentioned about a program to give him more calories so I suppose that would include playing a bit with some of the less offending ingrdients or stuff DS with supplements.
