No alcohol in 2024

I gave up alcohol for an entire year 10 years ago and I am going to challenge myself to do it again in 2024. Anyone want to join me? I won’t lie I found it really hard. However, it did help me reset my habitual drinking. I feel ready to do it again. If anyone else feels a year off alcohol is something they want to do then join me on January 1st. I am going to take the next few days being honest with myself and reflecting on why I feel this challenge is something I need to do. Anyone who starts on January 1st with me can include their reasons in the introduction (if they wish to). I have a big birthday this year so I know it will be a challenge on that day as-well as Christmas and New Year 2024 but I am determined.

Me too please 🤚.. day 8.

so first week was a bit of a rollercoaster, insane sugar consumption and anything in sight consumption for the first 2-3 days. Definitely filling that void. Sleep has been interesting with some crazy dreams, night sweats have calmed now but definitely around 4 mornings I woke up drenched. This morning I was having a weird dream and woke with a start and pulled a muscle in my neck ffs oh well.

anxiety and intrusive thoughts have gone from 9/10 to 1/10. I’ve been irritated I’ve been tearful and I’ve been tempted - but I’ve ridden it out.

someone on this section of the forum wrote that they don’t read quit lit as it’s rather like reading cookery books when you are on a diet. I got that, I’ve read a lot of them and it keeps alcohol in my head. It doesn’t deserve to be in my head so personally quick lit isn’t for me.

danger zone for me - hunger. If I eat and fill my tummy I’m not interested after that.

pavillion1 · 08/01/2024 19:00

its lovely having so many of us .. I follow a brilliant guy on tik tok . Hes doing the january countdown and so far he has nailed how im feeling every day .

whereaw · 08/01/2024 19:33

Both me and my partner are giving up for the year. He was a much (!) heavier drinker than me. I've noticed his food intake has gone through the roof! I think that must be quite a normal response because generally he eats almost no chocolate or snacks. So if anyone is the same I would personally not worry about it now and focus on food intake when cravings, emotions etc settle down.

rainbowbee · 08/01/2024 19:46

Still doing well here. I'd like to recommend the I am Sober app. It has daily motivational tasks and milestones and it adds up the money you might otherwise have spent on alcohol.
I've done part of a craft project and cleaned the bathroom this evening. Feeling productive helps :)

Xelda · 08/01/2024 19:48

Hi, I'm still in for the year and beyond!

skippydo · 08/01/2024 19:52

Another one checking in... I really enjoy the messages and support from the team....

Weekend was tough just because I felt a bit directionless... all plans at the weekend led to wine and this time it didn't...

Atacamadesert · 08/01/2024 19:55

Checking in on day 8 and still going forward. Haven’t been sleeping great but there was an absence of the low grade grinding tiredness I often feel if I’ve had a drink at the weekend. You know you are getting old when your life just consists of different levels of tiredness 😂😂. Hopefully by the end of this I might actually feel good!

Gio1 · 08/01/2024 20:10

@Noalcohol2024 Hello everyone. Checking in after completing my first week. I have to say the mood was not good most of the week after NYE’ antics but feeling much better today. I think it takes a few weeks for the psychological part to settle…mood, longings, bargaining, fomo, etc! Roll on. Well done on your progress everybody. Here’s to a year no beer! 🙌🏼

Wow! Breezed through work today.

It was wonderful! First hangover free Monday in so long....the Sunday brunches crept up nearly weekly!

Kashybear · 08/01/2024 21:15

Pleased I have got through week one. ( Ex weekend binger)
Hope to keep myself busy this weekend by doing an early spring clean to take my mind off alcohol.
Going to buy some posh Squash.
Weekends I feel I need to have a soft drink while watching Tv.
I too have trouble sleeping all night. At weekends I am awake at 3 or 4am, so I sit up in bed with my IPad and surf the net till 6am. I then go back to sleep, trust me the second sleep is like being in a coma. I then have to force my self to get up at 10am.
well done to everyone who has got this far, baby steps lead to better things.

willowtree66 · 08/01/2024 21:19

Hi, I would like to join in too. Me and DH drink regularly and frequently binge drink, waking up feeling like crap and swearing it's the last time. We both decided to give up alcohol completely for 2024 and in fact started being AF on 28 Dec, so 12 days in already.

Sonnet · 08/01/2024 21:32

I’ve been lurking but would like to join you please.
Im alcohol dependent having a drink every day to mark the end of the work day/ enforced relaxation/ manage day to day stresses.

Its been worrying me for a while but I’m scared of failing

I’ve been away for a week over New Year with alcohol featuring every day

Im tired of alcohol in my life, I want to not be bothered by it.

I’m 5 days AF today.

This thread has been a great help - thank you

RhubarbRocks · 08/01/2024 21:47

@Noalcohol2024 day 8 for me today so please add me onto the list!

unbelievablescenes · 08/01/2024 21:50

Checking in on day 8 and definitely on the wagon for week 2 🙂 I could definitely have a vino at any given poi t but I'm not craving it uncomfortably. Still excited to keep getting better in all areas of life and slamming the gym. Off to bed as I'm tired but predicting another good sleep 👌🏼 Well done everyone

TeeNoG · 08/01/2024 22:21

Another one to add to your list please @Noalcohol2024 🙂.

Day 13 here. I was back at work today for the first time this year, and what was notable is that I had no 'Sunday Scaries' feeling at all. I feel able to cope a lot better with things that usually sky rocket my anxiety.

K4tM · 08/01/2024 23:34

Last drink was NY day. Feeling great actually. Tons more energy. Skin feels smoother, tummy less bloated. My goal is 3 months. So far, so good!

RhubarbRocks · 09/01/2024 06:57

My skin is looking much better but my sleep is getting worse and my anxiety is through the roof! I think I’ve just been numbing it all before and now have to find a different way to deal
with it.

My husband is sailing through this with no cravings or anxiety at all.

Any tips welcome as it is not a nice feeling - but now I know it is there I definitely don’t want to go back to relying on alcohol to mask it and I am quite horrified how much I crave it.

I didn’t drink huge amount - always had at least 2-3 days alcohol free a week - but overdid it a bit every weekend.

Sonnet · 09/01/2024 10:09

Whilst it’s only been 5 days for me I’m not noticing any benefits yet 😀
I’m so very tired, but also getting over a viral thing so not sure what is attributed to what 😀
@RhubarbRocks - I understand where you’re coming from, I also use wine as a crutch so need to invest in other ways to do this. Reading works for me and I did an online yoga class last night. How about a relaxing bath? Or a tv drama?

whereaw · 09/01/2024 11:00

Good morning everyone.
I am feeling exhausted, but I always struggle to get to sleep and then my 2 year old was up every half hour from 1pm ... but on the positive I'm trying to get her to sleep in her own bed at the moment which isn't something I'd have the energy or inclination to do after a having a drink!

@RhubarbRocks I get very bad anxiety, I try to lean into it in the day, to push me to get stuff done! But nights are difficult, no answers but solidarity. I think we are on a journey to discover our true selves by quitting the drink so I'm just talking it day by day. I used to read, draw, listen to music, write, I don't do any of those things anymore! So hoping to get back to what brought me real peace and relaxation, or maybe discovering something new!

I had a bad morning today, I shouted at my eldest getting ready for school .. it was all such a rush and he cries and moans at every request. Feeling quite bad now.

Still not craving alcohol just seem to be overwhelmed with emotions (good or bad) every day. Anyone else? Confused

halfthesun · 09/01/2024 11:18

Good morning! 8 days sober and sleep is the main issue - wake up every couple of hours plus very disturbing dreams that I went back to Uni, as a man, and was told I was too old! I am a 51 year old female. Anyhow skin is much improved, I have dropped 4 pounds and almost ate my weight in cheese last night but this has not had an impact ..... hmmmmm just realised this could be linked to my dreams 🤣 or is this a made up thing? Anyhow stay strong and love reading all your posts Daffodil

Sonnet · 09/01/2024 11:39

I’m not craving alcohol either @whereaw
feeling generally flat and lacking energy

weird vivid dreams here too @halfthesun

whereaw · 09/01/2024 13:12

Has anyone tried Three Spirit drinks? Someone just sent me a link.. looks interesting! But expensive..

@whereaw never tried them (let us know if they are any good). The Tanquery 0% is okay and the 0% Guinness and Corona with a wedge of lime in the top. I’m avoiding these for the first month myself as I think they’ll trigger me but when I go out I will order 0% corona or 0% Guinness depending on what I am eating.
