No alcohol in 2024

I gave up alcohol for an entire year 10 years ago and I am going to challenge myself to do it again in 2024. Anyone want to join me? I won’t lie I found it really hard. However, it did help me reset my habitual drinking. I feel ready to do it again. If anyone else feels a year off alcohol is something they want to do then join me on January 1st. I am going to take the next few days being honest with myself and reflecting on why I feel this challenge is something I need to do. Anyone who starts on January 1st with me can include their reasons in the introduction (if they wish to). I have a big birthday this year so I know it will be a challenge on that day as-well as Christmas and New Year 2024 but I am determined.

Me too! I need a change in overall health and well-being and this could help.

Xelda · 30/12/2023 12:29

Count me in! I went AF for 3 years and stupidly decided a few years ago that it would be nice to have a drink now and then. Alcohol is too much of a habit again and I think I would just like to cut it out completely. Good luck everyone!

SadSandwich · 30/12/2023 12:39

Count me in - really up for a reset of old habits. It’s my way of dealing with stress especially this last year where I've literally had to deal with teens plus my elderly mother. So I’ve found comfort in alcohol and guess what, there is not comfort there only more stress, tiredness and disorganisation. Glad to be part of this community and well done for posting OP.

Rolypoly2961 · 30/12/2023 12:58

Add me please. I started on 28th December and I am using the Try Dry app which I have found quite motivating in the past as it logs money and calories saved

Atacamadesert · 30/12/2023 13:29

I would like to join too! I’m a bit of a weekend binge drinker. I rarely drink in the week but come a Friday or Saturday I do over do it. I’ve done a month off before and cut down and the impacts are always positive. I just suspect that it’s really holding me back and I have a strong suspicion that life would be massively better without it. All that said I am a bit confused as to why I find it very hard to knock it on the head!!

Noalcohol2024 · 31/12/2023 07:13

Last day for some of us enjoy it. I am looking forward to starting tomorrow. Off to the gym now. Won’t be staying up late. Early dinner for me and then will stop drinking as my son may need picking up at 4 am (I have an alcohol breathalyser at home so I always check I’m safe to drive plus I work out it is roughly 1 unit per hour). Champagne with scallops and red wine with fillet steak for me today. I’ll post all names tomorrow and my action plan for January. I know it is going to be hard. Have a great New Year 🎉

I’d like to join too. Alcohol consumption has crept up on me after a really tough year. Dh has said he wants to have a year off - his drinking is off the scale and makes him difficult. I feel he is expecting me to manage his drinking, like I manage every thing else, but I need to remember that I am doing this for me. I want to save money and be healthier and more organised!

Areyoumashing · 31/12/2023 07:34

You will not regret it and the urge to drink fades relatively quickly. I gave up for many years and although have a couple of glasses of wine or a bottle of beer here and there I’d much rather have a nice coffee or a cup of tea. Nothing beats waking up hangover free. It really is just habitual behaviour and you can retrain your brain. Probably not relevant at the mo but I sometimes have zero lager/wine just cos I like the taste but don’t want the alcohol effect. You will get addicted to your new sense of wellbeing! Good luck.

glindathegoodbitch · 31/12/2023 07:44

Yes please for me. Alcohol levels creeping back up after a healthscare in 2021. Now bingeing to point of no return twice a week. Skin is awful. Weight is awful. My body hurts.
I need to sort my shit out.

Thank you for starting this x

Atacamadesert · 31/12/2023 09:46

what is everyone doing tonight? Im out for a meal with a small group of friends and acquaintances. Exactly the kind of social situation I find really hard to face without alcohol!!! Im planning to take it easy but as I said before, my off switch is a bit sticky.

Sounds like we have similar patterns!

Iamateadrinker · 31/12/2023 13:03

Can you add me too please?
I need a reset

Hunsterbunster · 31/12/2023 13:41

I would love to join as well please! I also need a reset!

Wheredoesthetime · 31/12/2023 13:44

Could I be added too? Don't even want to contemplate the damage I've done the last 3 years but it's time for a reset.

2nd of Jan for me as hosting tomorrow but then I am done!

Intos · 31/12/2023 14:11

Hi all! Please can I join?

I’m 51 and want (need) a reset. Going out for dinner tonight, and want this to be my last drink for 2024. Slightly nervous typing that since drinking is so much part of being sociable for me. But honestly, it makes me feel rubbish these days, anxious etc, which I don’t feel when I don’t drink. Here’s to all of us, and to a much better AF 2024!

BTW I gave up smoking, entirely, on the night of my 33rd birthday. After years of trying to give up, not managing it, smoking being part of my personality etc… but then something just clicked. Enough was enough. I made a pact to myself “just don’t smoke for a year” (rather than never ever again). And I didn’t. I’ve had maybe two cigarettes since then, just for the heck of it, but not in an addicted “must smoke” way. Drinking may be different however, since I’ve given up alcohol for up to 8 months, then had a drink, then like a PP, drinking levels soon back to where they were.

Good luck everyone and thanks OP for starting this thread!

glindathegoodbitch · 31/12/2023 22:32

Well, I'm in bed watching an Agatha Christie. Really didn't want to start the new year off with a hangover, so I've started a day early!

Happy new year all.
Roll on 2024 and a happier and healthier life.

Noalcohol2024 · 01/01/2024 02:50

Alcohol BAC reading 0 which is good as I am going to pick my son up now!

Glad to be starting and ending 2024 AF.

A project and a challenge but I am ready to be AF for a year.

Will list names later.

Happy New AF 2024.

Just realised it looks like 0.08 because of a shadow line. It’s definitely 0.00! I did one earlier that showed 0.01.

I commented earlier saying I was considering this and now upgrading to definitely joining. I've been thinking about it for a few days and have felt excited to have a break - which is interesting to me as I wouldn't feel like that if it was something I truly enjoyed that made me happy would it.

hashbrownsandwich · 01/01/2024 10:09

Well this is it people, day 1 is a go!

VanLife33 · 01/01/2024 10:10

I'm in!
Got a slight hangover from last night's celebrations but definitely feeling up to this challenge!
I've been thinking about doing it for a while but never stick to it,
I woke up and saw this thread and it just feels like it's mean to be!
Happy new year everyone and hears to a dry 2024!
Good luck all !
Day 1

Sunshineofyourlove · 01/01/2024 10:17

I planned to do this in 2020 but very quickly realised that a year wasn't enough and I would be better off alcohol free forever. It was the right decision and I am so glad I did it! Best of luck to you all. ☘️

Gio1 · 01/01/2024 11:26

Count me in. Quitting has been on my mind for quite a while. I can’t deal with the affects of alcohol any more. There’s no sense to it. This group will be a great motivator.

Jeffsmeffsmiff · 01/01/2024 11:39

You know it's funny. I started early and am on day 18 already. Christmas (including the lead up) and NYE were easy enough. I actually enjoyed all of it more knowing I wouldn't be hungover, or anxious the next day. But the 1 occasion I can't imagine without alcohol is on holiday. I'm not sure why. Maybe because we often go all inclusive and I can't imagine them having anything nice that's alcohol free? (I hate sweet drinks like Fanta 🤢) Ive never been a cocktails by the pool type, so it's just evenings but I'm finding that hard to imagine without a drink. I guess since we won't be going away till the summer I have a long time to get my head around it.
Anyway, good luck everyone. 2024 is going to be healthy for our bodies and bank balances without alcohol.

crosstalk · 01/01/2024 13:33

@Jeffsmeffsmiff Is it worth asking the company you're travelling with what they can offer non-alcohol drinkers in the AI package? I hate sweet drinks too so end up carting fizzy water or Big Tom around.
