Any penguins about? Dry January 2023

Hello there

I can’t see a specific thread for upcoming Dry January so I thought I’d start one! Penguins is a reference from previous DJ threads to us supporting each other and pulling anyone teetering on the edge of the iceberg, ie a glass of wine etc, into the huddle.

I’ve done several dry Januarys over the years and had fantastic support. Anyone fancy joining?

I’m 50s, 3 teens and working 4 days a week. Rather too reliant on a glass of wine of an evening to unwind/ reward/ drown sorrows. Would love to chat to others looking to cut out for January.

Can I join please. 49. Drinking waaaaay too much wine. Need to change lifestyle

Timeforabiscuit · 29/12/2022 12:03

I've done dry January for about 5 years, but for the last 3 have been dry the whole year round.

It's taken far longer to stop the rituals of drinking than I ever gave credit for, but taking those breaks at January has led to a long term change for me.

Mykittensmittens · 29/12/2022 12:06

Me me me!! I am a penguin. I’ve done a few. I was around back when we did a lot of Epsom salts baths and haiku if anyone recalls that.

I’m in with caveat. My DGM, much much lived (I lived with her till I was 9) is on end of life care in hospital. If she passes in January and I have a funeral to arrange, I may well crack.

Betterversion · 29/12/2022 12:06

Hello hello! Tentatively joining. I don’t really “need” to, but I tested myself by adding kirsch cherries & brandy-laced cream to my shopping & also have had mulled wine this season. Otherwise been dry since July 2021.

I was among the first Penguins in 2015, our very first Dry Jan when we penned the name! Broken it on/off but I need to be off. My diet could also do with some attention.

Good luck everyone!

Vegetablesupreme · 29/12/2022 12:47

I'll join. Gave myself a week off the wine over Christmas (20th to 27th Dec) as had my DD staying and she's quite anti booze and surprised myself at how easy I found it. Normally I polish off 3 to 4 glasses of wine each and every evening. She went home yesterday so ended up buying some and drank last night. But have told myself that come new years day I won't touch a drop for the rest of the month. If I can do a week I can do a month!

freshstart2023 · 29/12/2022 15:07

Please can I join?

I’m drinking a bottle of wine a day at the moment, sometimes more - and am in major need of a reset.

I know I need to do this for the sake of my health (physical and mental), my family and even my job.

My goal is to complete dry January and then drink in moderation going forward.

It’s 2.5 days away though and I’ll be honest, I’m already feeling daunted and like I can’t do this.

KernowGirl181 · 29/12/2022 17:22

I'm in. This will be my 10th year of dry Jan! Hoping to do 100 days this time around. I'm starting today ....after one too many at a party last night. Feel like death 😰

Oblomov22 · 29/12/2022 17:27

There's a thread already. @Montypulciano.

55andlifephasecrisis · 29/12/2022 21:29

I am so up for trying to knock a bottle of wine a day on the head

55andlifephasecrisis · 29/12/2022 21:30

Yep same here

55andlifephasecrisis · 29/12/2022 21:31

I am in the same position as you

Batterseabunny · 01/01/2023 09:14

I’m in too! I drink regularly over the year but always push it over Christmas so definitely need a reset. I’ve bought some nice soft drinks and need to get some good biscuits (I find decaf tea and biscuits the treat I need in the evening if I’m off the booze). I want to reset drinking habits, lose the belly bloat I’ve acquired over December and stop feeling sluggish in the morning. My sleep is so affected by booze too.

This Christmas I actually haven’t done any ‘binge’ drinking but I’ve drunk at least 1/2 wines every day and felt ok the next. However last night I felt I needed to make the most of my last day of booze so drank an entire bottle of my favourite wine and feel sooooo slow and fuzzy today which I hate. It’s a good reminder of why I’m doing this!

MercuryRising · 01/01/2023 09:35

This year will be my first DJ so I would love to join you all for moral support. I'm looking to lose some weight so hoping this will help 🙏

UnoQueenie · 01/01/2023 10:44

Me please! I'm 40 this year, done Dry Jan a couple of times, and looking forward to a reset!

LongerThanADryJanuary23 · 01/01/2023 10:59

Penguin here and ready to go.

I've not done a dry jan for a few years but so ready for this one as I've really really over indulged throughout December and I feel shocking for it - not to mention how shocking my waistline has become!

I'm excited for Dry January - but then I would be as it's only the first day and 5pm hasn't rolled around yet....I'll be back later for support😅

Anyone else over excited / over ambitious and thinking "I'll do 3 months" - in fact no, I'm going to be tee total for the rest of my life 🤘
(when in fact come January 7th I'll probably be pissed off and ruing the day I thought dry January was a good idea)

Namechange1990 · 01/01/2023 18:15

Oooo can I join please... Glass wine whilst cooking dinner become far to much of a habit and ends up with bottle or more. First night in ages tonight I haven't drunk. Feel surprisingly ok about it so far

SummerScoop · 01/01/2023 19:07

Hello, I'm in too, I tried for the first time last year but didnt get to the end of January. Definitely need a reset with wine.

Stickywhitelovepiss · 01/01/2023 21:20

Am over on the other thread, but following here too! Why are DJers called penguins?

behappy1736 · 01/01/2023 23:46

Yes I'm in. Here for support hoping we can all encourage each other. My dry jan starts tomorrow 😬 daunting but excited need a wine reset!

Wishmelucknow · 02/01/2023 00:12

I’m also in. I’m early 50s but had a crap year so drunk far too much over the year that my liver is creaking. i lost 2 parents and MIL this year and know I’ve been using it as a crutch and feel well emosh tonight. Managed 23 days in January last year but need to change my lifestyle. I want to start living again and not languishing! Had some alcohol free G & T we had left from last year! Hope I sleep ok! First few days are always hard…. But glad there are others on this January journey!

SummerScoop · 03/01/2023 11:57

@Wishmelucknow sorry to hear about your parents and mil

How is everyone getting on? Day 3 here and feeling okay. Didnt sleep well last night but back to work tomorrow so hopefully routine will help.

Batterseabunny · 03/01/2023 17:20

I’m enjoying it so far and sleeping well but eating and drinking so much sugary stuff to compensate! When I’m back to work I won’t be able to graze all today. For me the hard bit will be Friday and Saturday evenings.

behappy1736 · 03/01/2023 18:48

I'm doing ok, I bought some J20 Spritz today so may treat myself to a glass in a wine glass tonight!

MercuryRising · 03/01/2023 19:43

Day 3 done ✔ I don't find the week hard, it will be the weekend which will be more challenging
