Anyone up for Dry July?

Day 1 - 👍🏼

MadgeMak · 01/07/2019 20:32

I'll join you. I will be breaking my dry period in week 3 for a social event but I'm going to at least try to moderate that night.

Julykthat · 01/07/2019 20:37

Yes, I'm in. Easy first day Smile, I predict my will power crumbling around day 4 so hope being on here will help strengthen it. It's only 4 weeks, I've done longer but not in two years or so.

My low point is cooking dinner after a long day at work, I am so much nicer with a glass of ice cold white wine. Without I'm tetchy but healthier. Tough choice!I also predict I will be feeding everyone pasta pesto and other fast food.

soberken · 01/07/2019 20:49

Hopefully we can keep each other going at trigger points!

Can I join? I did a 90 day challenge earlier this year that I have carried on with, but would love to be on a thread with others.

soberken · 01/07/2019 21:17

Welcome @GirlFliesHome

How many days are you AF now?

That's super impressive.

I actually want to stop for good. Had a damp June, but I'm motivated for a dry July

Day 2 .....

What's our plan for a sober Day 2?

Trigger points for me are hunger and tiredness!

I researched H A L T. Hunger, Angry, Lonely or Tired.

My huge trigger is socialising. I'd love to understand more.

I'm reading Annie Grace, The Naked Mind.

Happy Sober Tuesday!

Can I join? Aiming for 28 days as a starter. Yesterday was easy after taking it too far over the weekend and feeling pretty rubbish.

I'm all or nothing, can never seem to have 1 glass of wine/Prosecco and stop, always have to carry on. I'm spending money I could be saving, then there's the pizza I order or shit I eat (white carbs which seem to destroy my stomach) which I wouldn't do if I hadn't had a drink. I also feel so bloated in the morning.

I'm late 30's and just don't enjoy it anymore. Bring on a healthy dry July.

soberken · 02/07/2019 07:31

@supercee .... I am the same. The cycle is ridiculous. I'm early 40's and genuinely had enough.

Sick and tired of being sick and tired.

Download the naked mind podcast - Annie Grace. It's very eye opening and explores about "problems" with alcohol without labelling.

MadgeMak · 02/07/2019 08:12

I'm a can't have just one glass type too. I'm currently reading mindful drinking by Rosamund Dean, but I'm dragging my feet to finish it for some reason. I'll check out that podcast.

I'm usually able to abstain during the week, mainly because I can't spare the time for being hungover, but at the weekend I always overindulge and it's out of hand. I'm trying to quit smoking too and once that glass of wine is in my hand on Saturday night I cave.

roseblush · 02/07/2019 09:52

Bit late but would love to join. I've been drinking 1 or 2 most days, sometimes a lot more. Mainly to cope with toddler and house moving stress. Giving myself 2 free passes, moving day and meet up with my best friend.
I've read that book @MadgeMak I found it helpful initially but I need to do the 28 days dry! I've had dry spells in the past and managed lots of social occasions but my will power is awful at the moment.
I'm halfway through drink less in 7 days by Georgia Foster.

soberken · 02/07/2019 14:35

You are not too late @roseblush welcome!

There seem to be so many of us that can't stop at the "one glass"

Coming into the "tricky time zone"

I plan to go for a walk Grin

OP posts:
supercee · 02/07/2019 16:57

Thanks @soberken @MadgeMak I'll check out those suggestions. I started the Allen Carr one about women stopping drinking a while back but only got a quarter way through. Definitely determined to start and finish it this time.

Sun is shining here and leaving work with thoughts of 'I'll have a little wine' usually creep in but motivation is still high!

Also helps that I've sort of gone through a friends overhaul (the meh friends thread has been a revelation) which has meant that the friends who I would go to for midweek bottles of wine haven't been in the picture. And that has definitely been positive!

We can do this!

roseblush · 02/07/2019 17:58

Thanks for the welcome @soberken
My plan is no wine in the house so no temptation. And I downloaded the drink aware app a few weeks ago and its currently saying higher risk Blush I'm looking forward to being able to put today down as a dry day.

GirlFliesHome · 02/07/2019 20:39

Thanks for the welcome soberken!

I am 134 days in total this year AF. I got to 125 then had a few drinks here and there. So I want to do another consecutive 30 days for Dry July. I had a few drinks, then it was a struggle to get some strung in a row again.

My trigger is coming home from work. I have to do any food shopping at lunch then go straight home, otherwise I buy mini bottles of prosecco. I also make sure I pour a huge glass of fevertree tonic with loads of crushed ice and herbs and that helps.

soberken · 03/07/2019 05:22

Day 3.

OP posts:
roseblush · 03/07/2019 15:49

Was tempted to buy a mini bottle of wine today just in case. Bought some nice juice instead though.

PaperFlowers4 · 03/07/2019 19:08

I’d like to join in. I’ve just gone 6 days without a drink and making an exception for tonight. I’m coming back from a work trip and the only thing I look forward to on these very boring train journeys is the free drink. I decided earlier today to allow myself a gin and tonic on the train. Usually I have a few drinks with colleagues while I’m on these trips but this time I didn’t, so I’m pleased with myself for saying no.

I have a wedding to attend this month and I haven’t decided if I will let myself drink or not. My husband is in the wedding party so I will probably be sat at a table of people I don’t know and I’ll feel more relaxed If I have a drink or two, but then I’ll probably carry on drinking all evening. I don’t want to be hungover the next day, so leaning towards a total drinks ban. I’m another one of those who finds it hard to stop at one if more is available.

supercee · 04/07/2019 06:37

I've been relying on mini bottles of sparkling water in a wine glass with some fresh lime and ice. Will get some slimline tonic for the weekend and possibly some kombucha.

Still feeling good and no urge to give in - yet!

TigerJoy · 04/07/2019 06:45

Can I join? I'm aiming for a full year AF and I've done 2 weeks so far, but to be honest I'm just taking it one day at a time! I've been reading the Reddit Stop Drinking thread but the more support the better!

I'd like to drink again eventually but I'm TTC so it seems sensible to go cold turkey at least for a bit!

I've been drinking kombucha and lots of fizzy water.

I've also spent the last 2 weeks eating an enormous amount of icecream! It helped with the booze cravings in the evening but not the waistline so I'm committing to healthier eating starting today...

supercee · 04/07/2019 06:53

What brand of kombucha do you drink @TigerJoy? I liked the Captain Kombucha stuff from Holland & Barrett but trying to keep the carbs/sugar down and it seems to be quite high in sugar...

Funny how I don't get as stressed about sugar when drinking loads of wine/Prosecco ConfusedGrin

TigerJoy · 04/07/2019 17:37

I really like Lo Bros. They have some good flavours and relatively low in sugar.

And I know what you mean, i never cared about the sugar in prosecco or lager either! 😂

soberken · 04/07/2019 23:04

Day 4 complete - comrades!

@supercee Funny how I don't get as stressed about sugar when drinking loads of wine/Prosecco

This is so true. I follow healthy eating, very mild exercise, watch what I eat yet who gives 2 shits about drinking the calories of a Big Mac in alcohol

Blush

I would be keen to know how everyone's sleep is? If I've been drinking or the 3 days after I sleep TERRIBLE ..... slowly it gets better for me to then fuck up again

Anyone got any tips on tricky times avoiding alcohol? Like social drinking, picnics, BBQ's ... 5pm!!!!!!!

OP posts:
PiggyPokkyFool · 04/07/2019 23:19

I am a little late to the party but would like to join you all. I have been alcohol free for two weeks, bar a planned social occasion last night. It is hard as DH loves his wine and sitting in the garden tonight with him enjoying his wine and kettle chips while I drank my tea felt a bit miserable. I am enjoying sugar free Fanta and ginger beer if I am not drinking.
I have lots of lovely summer dresses that look much better when I am 8 stone something than 9 stone something so am trying to focus on that in addition to the health issue but it isn't easy doing it alone so would love your support.
I sleep great regardless of whether I drink or not - sorry

TigerJoy · 04/07/2019 23:51

I'm going to a family celebration tomorrow - and I'm taking my own non-alcoholic fizz! This will be new so we'll see how it goes down. My family is very boozy so it will be interesting....!
