When we adopted DS (17 years ago), the SW said to us that ‘no adopted child will ever be a rocket scientist and don’t plan on him going to university, because adopted kids will struggle at school’ Well he did struggle at school (but no more that lots of kids), and he’s just been offered a place at university. I’m so bloody proud of him. What. A. Star.

And fuck you SW.

Just wanted to share that.

Thank you all for the well wishes and also the positive stories, I hope that others who might be struggling or are just hearing lots of negativity are able to read this and take heart.

This has lifted me so much. Our initial SW said something similar to us. Youngest is now in specialist primary and thriving. Eldest will go to specialist secondary. They are both happy and loved.

Wow I hate when anyone tries to set limitations on kids! I had the "you'll never do anything" label. Yep I'm no rocket scientist but Im married, i have a decent job and my own home.

Im so happy for you! Well done kid!

A friend of mine had a difficult childhood with an alcoholic father & a mother with severe mental health issues who was regularly hospitalised. Her father drank himself to death when she was 15 & she had to go into foster care.

She had a brilliant foster carer who supported her through her A levels. She got a first class degree & a PhD from a top university & is now a senior academic in her late forties working in research, teaching & training around foster care practice. She's stayed in contact with her SW & local authority who treat her case as a fantastic success story.

Congrats to you & your son OP. I love learning about new degree subjects that I've never heard of & have no clue about. It gives me a lovely opportunity to smile & say (in genuine wonderment & positivity) "what will the world think of next?" 😀

@ifchocolatewerrcelery

I have a name for your SW. Dara Ó Briain.

Huge congratulations to your son. Gaming is massively big business so there's lots of opportunities out there in it.

Wonderful to hear about your son, OP. Big congratulations to him and to you! I was adopted and became the Director of a charity and a published writer. My adopted grandchild is a hard working high achiever in primary school and set to do well. It’s great to hear so many good news stories xx

Congratulations I have a mixture of BC and AC, hate all the judgements, it’s honestly been the hardest part, but with 5 we are more than used to it. One of my rather laid back boys, was told by his head of year at a career meeting that the best he could hope for was a job at a supermarket, I politely told him how discussed I was and watch this space, ( nothing against working in a supermarket) it was just that he was eagerly telling the teacher how he wanted to go to uni, so really upset me, any way, got a masters in law and now works for a very large American law firm 😁 soooo big big congrats to you, enjoy and wallow
