getting up from seat rant!!! sorry long!)

sorry but i need to get this off my chest!!

the other day i was on a bus home from a very long and tiering day from work.
i made sure i got on at the first stop as i know it will get packed easy.

so the bus goes to the next stop and as predicted a whole load of people get on.
I notice a pregnant women (who looked about 7 months pregz) walked on the bus, an older women about 60 offered her seat and she declined.

about 4 stops later i get a tap on my shoulder and someone saying "can i sit down, i am 8 months pregnant with a bad back"
the cheek of it! i thought after i just saw her turn down a perfectly good seat.
so i said "sorry but i have had a long day" and just looked away.
i then noticed most of the people on the bus staring at me and then one man offered his seat wich she took.

I am not being rude or anything but its not my problem that you are 8 months pregant with a 'bad back'.

i just wanted to know your opinions on what you would do in that situation and if you think i was being a bit selfish?
(as my friend thought i was being after i told her the story)

feed back welcome from pregnant mums too
cheers

So you are saying 'because she turned down a seat from someone who was older than me she is no longer entitled to request a seat'

nancydrewrocks · 19/06/2010 16:41

You're kidding right?!

Ladyem · 19/06/2010 16:42

Bit rude of you, I think. She might have thought when the lady offered her seat that she'd be OK and not want to bother anyone, but then after a few minutes realised that holding herself up on the jolting bus was more tiring than she thought and that she would like a seat, please.

You could say the same about anything, not my problem you are old, frail, ill, disabled....

I take it you have never been pregnant or if you have it was a long time a go and you've forgotten how tiring it can be.

You know full well you were in the wrong - she turned down the seat from an elderly woman (yes I know that 60 isn't seen as decrepid) and thought she could manage - when she couldn't she politely asked you if she could sit in your seat - she could have asked anyone but maybe you were closer.

MavisG · 19/06/2010 16:44

I think you were. She probably didn't want to take an older person's seat, I guess you look (are?) youngish, able-bodied.

I think an attitude of 'it's not my problem that you're pregnant/old/dying of cancer' isn't very pleasant, but maybe you know it isn't, really, which might be why you've posted. Good for you for thinking about it and wondering if you were in the wrong.

I have been there, both sides, long exhausting day and pregnant and crippled with SPD. I've never waited to be asked to offer my seat though, perhaps because my Dad is disabled and I know how shit it is to need compassion from strangers.

LadyBiscuit · 19/06/2010 16:44

Maybe she thought she could stand and then found she couldn't? Or that maybe she didn't want to make an older person give up her seat when you are younger and clearly more able to stand. I think you were being selfish, yes

Have you ever been pregnant?

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 19/06/2010 16:45

You must know you were being unreasonable.

booyhoo · 19/06/2010 16:47

nice sense of community spirit you have

it doesn't matter that she turned down a seat. the fact is she came to a point where she needed help and asked you for it and you turned her down.

Bacofoil · 19/06/2010 16:49

Did you punch her too?

squeaver · 19/06/2010 16:49

Oh this is a wind up, surely.

Or, if it's not, this is what happened. Preggo woman gets on the bus, older woman offers her a seat, she declines because the woman is older and she thinks "if I really need a seat in a minute, there are lots of younger able bodied people I can ask".

Few mins later she does indeed need a seat and thinks "there's someone who'll understand my situation, I'll ask her". Then you say no.

Yes you were selfish. You should have offered her a seat as soon as she got on the bus. As should everyone else on the bus.

Bacofoil · 19/06/2010 16:52

alittlebitselfish are you the pregnant woman who was refused a seat by some old bastard on a bus?

lifeinagoldfishbowl · 19/06/2010 16:55

I did wonder that Bacofoil?

sorry to disappoint you but i have been pregnant, (my child is now 2) so i know it is not the end of the world.

all the responses i am getting are all on the womens side and why because she decided to go and get pregnant?
whilst i was pregant i never once asked a person to get up for me as i didnt think it was their problem.
if i thought i couldnt take standing up i would have though of another way of transport such as mini cab.

i had a very long day on my feet and now i really dont beleive i was being selfish just because i look young i don't see why i should get up. if it were for a elderly or disbled person i would deffinately get up but pregnancy is not some sort of disability in my opinion

Bacofoil · 19/06/2010 17:05

How do you know that she had exactly the same pain and problem free pregnancy that you enjoyed? Could she afford a cab? Had she had a short and easy day on her backside? Are you the queen of fucking everything?

You sound mad.

I hope she leaked a little bit of wee on your shoes.

maybe she cant afford to get a minicab!!!!! and why should she have to just because you are a selfish twat and dont think you should ever have to do anything for anyone else for nothing in return. honestly, some people really have me

booyhoo · 19/06/2010 17:09

and yes all the responses are all on the woman's side because she isn't the selfish one. why do you expect everyone to agree with you, people have opinions and they form them based on what they think, not what you want to hear.

Bacofoil · 19/06/2010 17:11

OI

alittlebitselfish

come back and amuse us some more

WWYD: an old lady is hit by a bus as she hails a black cab; her shopping trolley goes flying and kills a nearby puppy; as the trolley bounces, out flies the old lady's purse and some nice ham, landing near your feet. Do you

a) rush to the old lady's aid whilst dialling 999?
b) rush to comfort the owner of the poor dead flat puppy?
c) think Mmmm ham, grab her purse and leap over the near lifeless granny & jump in her cab?
d) other?

booyhoo · 19/06/2010 17:13
Grin
Ladyem · 19/06/2010 17:13

Ahhhhh, diddums that you'd had a long day...

May be she couldn't afford a taxi, may be she had a long day too.

This really has to be a wind-up!

alittlebitselfish · 19/06/2010 17:14

I asked for opinions not for abuse, you need to not have a heart attack calm down.

i just thought it was bit weird she walked all the way to the back of the bus where i am sitting to ask for a seat.

ROFL @ bacofoil!!

booyhoo · 19/06/2010 17:18

alotselfish you got opinions, yet you are still saying you dont think you were selfish, why ask for opinions in teh first place?

Bacofoil · 19/06/2010 17:20

On a skiing holiday you won after stealing a friend's slogan and claiming it for your own, alittlebitselfish, you find yourself having lessons in a group with a younger and far more attractive woman. Your handsome instructor, Hans, is giving her the glad eye. Do you

a) throw yourself at him and flirt like a lapdancer in order not to be outdone by the young leggy gorgeous bint?
b) tell your rival he's gay - you have seen him snowplowing his boyfriend apres ski?
c) switch the slope signs and 'accidentally' find yourself and the supermoggle-like bitch at the top of a black run, grease her skis and give her a good shove?
d) other?
