Can someone explain to me why Robert Kilroy Silk appears to be universally disliked?

I don't get it. I am not one for daytime tv, but I used to enjoy his morning chat show on the occasions I watched it and was moved by his compassion for some of the guests at times.

Then he fell from grace. I think he made a bit of a Daily Mail-type comment but I can't be sure. I know he then was connected to UKIP which I suppose people see as akin to the BNP, but as far as I know, that is all he has done wrong.

Can someone explain if there is more to it than that or have I summed up his crimes? Because it seems to me he is universally disliked and saying a nice word about him is like saying Hitler fed baby birds in spring.

And, tbh, I don't get it.

he isn't to you, DG. but to a lot of people he comes across as arrogant, mean-spirited, fake and racist.

DumbledoresGirl · 18/11/2008 12:44

OK. Point taken.

He always had Peter Hitchins as a guest on his show didn't he?

Having been on the show (no it's not exciting, just something I did for work-related reasons once or twice) I found him pretty condescending. Mind you, he wasn't the worst of 'em. I quite liked John Stapleton, he was always fairly sensible, but Nicky Cambell - pah!

Kathyis6incheshigh · 18/11/2008 18:22

He was sometimes very snide and patronising to guests on his chat show, specially younger ones. Might be very nice in RL though, who knows?

PortAndLemon · 18/11/2008 18:41

More compassion and caring from RK-S:

"[Muslims] are backward and evil and if it is racist to say so... then racist I must be ? and happy and proud, to be so." (Daily Express, 25 February 1991)

"The orgy of thieving in Iraq has more to do with the character of the people than the absence of restraining troops." (Sunday Express, 4 May 2003)

I could never bear to watch his TV show either -- he came across to me as oleaginous, patronising and full of faux sincerity and I'd have to turn it off.

DumbledoresGirl · 18/11/2008 20:29

No, that isn't showing a caring and compassionate attitude P&L, but it doesn't mean he is not capable of being it in other circumstances.

I like Nicky Campbell too. I must be attracted to the wrong sort of men.

my dad used to campaign for him when he was mp or something for where i grew up in the north, my dad was a brown nose my mum rightly got hammered at his party and threw sausage rolls at him telling him he was a twat, right on my mum!

though my dp sat next to him on a flight earlier this year and apparently he was perfectly nice to talk to, though he didnt mention my mothers incident!

PortAndLemon · 18/11/2008 20:35

My nasty cynical side thinks "yes, when he's being specifically paid huge amounts to pretend to be caring and compassionate for an hour or so"...

LittleBella · 18/11/2008 20:36

He's already made a couple of snidey smarmey remarks to other contestants

He is fascinatingly revolting. Adn the main reason I'm watching I'm a Sleb this year

DumbledoresGirl · 18/11/2008 20:36

Not so P&L, according to kiltycoldbum's dp!

OP posts:
glitterfairy · 18/11/2008 20:41

He has also been really sexist this year on Celeb and has thrown his weight about in a really autocratic way. he is a twat!

PortAndLemon · 18/11/2008 20:42

My nasty cynical side says "There's a difference between being genuinely caring and compassionate and being 'perfectly nice' to a casual acquaintance; no one can manage to behave like a total git 100% of the time"

Unless kiltycoldbum's dp was crying and RK-S held his hand, is ugly and RK-S made him feel good about himself, or was flirted with outrageously by RK-S. In which case I shall give my nasty cynicsl side a stern talking-to.

[Warning: my nasty cynical side will probably then stick its tongue out behind my back]

kiltycoldbum · 18/11/2008 20:42

i failed to mention that my dp was in the company of 30 other men on his way to a stag weekend, they totally ripped it out of him apparently being the drunken gits they mostly are when they're all together, my dp said it was very embarrassing but kilroy silk remained composed and didnt rise to it!

i still think he's slightly creepy.

PortAndLemonsNastyCynicalSide · 18/11/2008 20:43

Any crying/handholding/flirting?

pointydog · 18/11/2008 20:44

he is an arse, is all

DumbledoresGirl · 18/11/2008 20:44

LOL P&L.

OP posts:
pointydog · 18/11/2008 20:46

lol @ nob being only one part of a character. Covers all bases, I think

kiltycoldbum · 18/11/2008 20:46

p&l i imagine they bitched together about the world and who they thought was to blame for it all, my dp would have gone on about how labour have destroyed this country and blah blah i bet they got on like a house on fire!

DumbledoresGirl · 18/11/2008 20:48

Is I'm a celeb on tonight? I feel I have to watch to try to understand this universal loathing.

(Though Steve Wright was nice about him on Radio 2 this afternoon. Not sure how I feel about that tbh, given that I think SW is a complete dick)

OP posts:
pointydog · 18/11/2008 20:49

He seems ok at first. And then, gradually, you realise he is an arse. And that's all I have to say about that

ChukkyPig · 18/11/2008 20:56

Had forgotten about the racist remarks so came to him "fresh" (ish).

Had decided he was a v sexist arse within about 5 mins. Some of the comments he has made to/about the women have been atrocious!

DumbledoresGirl · 18/11/2008 22:04

Well, just watched him and came to the conclusion he has got himself a bad name in a short time but couldn't honestly see anything offensive in today's episode. I would have reacted like him in that trial if I had thought the key did not fit the lock. When showed he was using the wrong key, he was gracious to Joe.

(I know this isn't a I'm a Celebrity thread as such, but Joe comes across as the nicest one there).

OP posts:
pointydog · 18/11/2008 22:17

kilroy silk was on the telly for donkeys years and had not too bad a name. He was thought of as vain but that was about as bad as it got. Then he started acting like an utter nob, throwing his weight wround and making his dodgy comments. It didn't happen in a particulrly short time, from what I remember

Bubble99 · 18/11/2008 22:20

I did a couple of agency stints as unit nurse for his show. He was very thin and very orange.
