Has anyone ordered a takeaway to a pub before?

Strange question but
I was having a drink with some friends last night and someone from the table next to us went to the door and picked on up.
The pub itself does hot food but not at the time they ordered takeaway.
Is this a thing? Its genius lol
I did ask bar staff but they got the wrong end of the stick I thought i was complaining ( i wasnt just curious)

Quite a few local to us suggest this - even have menus on the table from local ones to order from. Works particularly well when there’s sport on but they don’t have the kitchen open.

A rural pub near me started doing this. Its been very popular

NestofVapers · 30/10/2026 08:30

I've only ever seen it where there is an agreed arrangement between a pub and a specific food place I.e a craft beer place and a pizza place on the same street

It sounds great in theory but you'd want people to clean up after themselves and not make extra work for the pub. I can imagine containers being left and requests for cutlery that then needs to be washed.

WitchesBritches · 30/10/2026 08:31

No, I've never seen anyone do it.

I suppose in theory it's OK if the management don't mind when they aren't serving food, but I think it's a bit silly of them to allow it because it will be hard to police when they are serving food. It's easier just to have a blanket ban on ordering outside food.

The rugby and cricket lads quite often order pizzas to our local pub (much to the delight of our Labrador when he was still with us).

Arbourimage · 30/10/2026 08:35

In some pubs they advertise it as the done thing, one pub near me offers menus for a specific Thai place.
No one should assume and order a takeaway to any pub though.

Tillow4ever · 30/10/2026 08:39

Back in the 90’s the pub I went to would chuck everyone out at closing time except for our friendship group, then we’d get a takeaway delivered to sit and eat whilst we played cards and have a few more drinks.

i lived in a pub - it wasn’t something we allowed there.

brownbootsandhats · 30/10/2026 08:43

There are some pubs that keep plates and cutlery for this - only ones that don’t serve food

Somersetbaker · 30/10/2026 08:51

I've never seen this in a pub that serves food. I know of several that allow (book) food vans to park in their car parks, so it's burgers on Thursday, pizza on Friday and fish & chips on Saturday. Others allow customers to bring in their own food, delivery is not really an option around here.

MagicThanks · 30/10/2026 08:55

Yeah, a pub near us doesn’t do food and people do it in there

LondonLass2026 · 30/10/2026 08:56

No, but we had an offsite event at a very posh country hotel in the south east of England a few weeks ago, and one of the American delegates ordered a McDonald's to the hotel as soon as she arrived!

I thought it was hilarious!

HatethedarknightsQW · 30/10/2026 08:57

It’s very common at the pub quiz I go to fairly regularly….the pub doesn’t have a kitchen.

our local I got barred for ordering a delivery pizza…landlord got really pissed off. I snuck back in after a few months. So best to check first.

LlamasDramas · 30/10/2026 08:57

I'm surprised that pubs are happy for this to happen. Who is going to clear up all the mess it creates? Wouldn't the pub have to provide plates and cutlery? Some food would get spilled and dropped as well.

I feel sorry for the bar staff because there would be a whole load of greasy rubbish left behind.

Applestroodle · 30/10/2026 09:00

Only done it in one specific pub after hours with the owners.

MCF86 · 30/10/2026 09:02

not delivered but I had fish and chips from the chippy in the pub garden during the summer and was happy as a pig in shit to be honest 😂

The pub doesn't serve food and it makes more sense to allow it than lose their customers at dinner time to the pub next door!

Wickedwhiskers · 30/10/2026 09:12

Ive seen it in a pub that no longer serves food thenselves. They had a sign up saying that people could do it

Rednailsandredlipstick4ever · 30/10/2026 09:30

Never seen it happen before. Good idea especially when kitchen is closed etc.

Yes people do this. My local social club only does food for a few hours at the weekend. I’ve seen people ordering pizzas etc in the evening. I think it would only be allowed if the place didn’t serve their own food at the same time.

Maybe I just frequent naice establishments but lots of people do this at my wonderful local and it’s never a problem. They also have food truck on the garden on summer weekends. Everyone just clears their stuff up.

I think it’s genius.

AutobanTicket · 30/10/2026 09:57

Yes, but only in places where it is suggested.

There is a pub in my town with a Thai restaurant attached and you can order food into the pub.

I used to live in Paris many years ago and they had the same thing in this cool little bar. You could order from the Vietnamese place next door. I think it worked well for both places as you kept buying drinks in the bar and also gave the restaurant a bit of business

SwisswolvesLilley · 30/10/2026 10:02

Yes, we have done it. The pub didn’t serve food but were happy for us to stay there and order in. So we did.

Cravey · 30/10/2026 10:14

Our pub serves food until 10, we did allow take outs in after kitchen close but after this summer have put a stop to it, the mess left behind was awful and made so much more work for our cleaners. We serve filled rolls now until closing time so there’s always something to eat.

itsmeitsyou · 30/10/2026 10:20

Where I worked the sign said - Kitchen open no outside food. Flip it over. Kitchen shut outside food welcome.

EerieDemeanour · 30/10/2026 10:29

Yes, it’s becoming more common here, small businesses supporting each other either with the trailer in the car park system or by being able to have food delivered/brought in, I’ve only ever seen people get pizzas or burger/tacos from the tex-mex place in town who will both deliver, not Chinese, Indian etc, it does tend to be finger food. There are no McDs etc within 10 miles so none of those either.

Parky04 · 30/10/2026 10:38

Yep. My local is a wet pub. You mainly see pizzas being delivered.
