Has anyone ordered a takeaway to a pub before?

Strange question but
I was having a drink with some friends last night and someone from the table next to us went to the door and picked on up.
The pub itself does hot food but not at the time they ordered takeaway.
Is this a thing? Its genius lol
I did ask bar staff but they got the wrong end of the stick I thought i was complaining ( i wasnt just curious)

I'm surprised that pubs are happy for this to happen. Who is going to clear up all the mess it creates? Wouldn't the pub have to provide plates and cutlery? Some food would get spilled and dropped as well.

I feel sorry for the bar staff because there would be a whole load of greasy rubbish left behind.

They don't have to provide anything.

But why are you surprised at them having the good business sense to keep people there drinking longer?

If customers are hungry they'll go home or out to a restaurant etc.

Quite a few pubs round here allow/encourage it, not the ones that do actually serve food though. It's better than people leaving early to go and get food, this way they stay in the pub spending money.

Everyone removes their own rubbish and no need for the pub to provide plates or cutlery - most people are eating burgers/chips/pizza type food rather than a 3 course Indian banquet!

Yes quite a few in my home town do this. “We’ve got the pub, you bring the grub” No kitchen and one even has an arrangement with a takeaway opposite where you can order from the pub and the staff bring it over to the pub.

CorporalJohn · 30/10/2026 12:16

Yes, In fact, my local is next door to a pizza place. They walk the order round themselves.

Morrisdancer24 · 30/10/2026 12:39

It happens in my local. The pub doesn't care as people will stay to drink rather than leave to go home to eat.

We have a couple of local breweries who do this - one has an agreement with the burger place next door and you get 20% if you order with them to have in the brewery.

I’d never just order a takeaway to a pub without it being an agreed arrangement though. That’s just CF behaviour 😂

faithfultoGeorgeMichael · 30/10/2026 12:48

Our local does this but has no food offer itself. The pizza and curry place either side do a roaring trade 😂

We used to have a Sunday pm chinese takeaway. Bulk order would be put in for anyone in the pub who wanted anything and the local Chinese would bring it over.
Have also taken personal takeaway in early doors before it got busy on a Friday
Pub was more than happy to accommodate 🍻🍽🍜

Some allow/encourage and others don’t

Backedoffhackedoff · 30/10/2026 14:31

Some pubs allow it some don’t, you just have to ask them first

dontcookwontcook · 30/10/2026 14:56

Yeah pizzas!

Not to a pub no. But I was staying with a friend at a hotel once. We were attending an event the next day that hundreds of other people from the same activity were also going to and loads of us were staying at that hotel so they were mobbed and couldn’t provide dinner for all the guests that were staying. So they said we were welcome to order in, and even eat it at the bar. I think it’s a good idea as long as they don’t serve food, have stopped serving food as it’s late, or like this place just can’t manage all the customers. Those people will likely continue to drink from their bar, so it’s better than losing their custom if they have to go elsewhere to eat.

DH was on a canal boat holiday once and stopped at a pub with his friends. The pub wasn't doing food but the landlady recommended a take away and said they were welcome to bring it back to the pub to have with their pint. By the time they got back she'd put plates and cutlery out for them.

I used to go to a bar that only allowed takeaways on days where they weren't serving food.
