Hi posting this here for traffic. Hoping a medical professional can help me. I last had a period 15 years ago, they stopped dead after a traumatic event. I’m now 57 and I’m having a really painful heavy period! Does this happen sometimes? Is it normal or should I talk to my doctor? Tia

Not normal. See GP as soon as possible.

Beenaroundabit · 26/10/2026 15:52

Not a GP but you deffo need to see one. Any bleeding after menopause should be investigated.

RiaOverTheRainbow · 26/10/2026 15:53

Any bleeding post-menopause needs a doctor's visit. Talk to your GP, hopefully it's nothing serious x

This isn't a period, and no, its not normal.
It's described as post-menopausal bleeding and you need to see a doctor.

catzrulz · 26/10/2026 15:56

Absolutely make an appointment asap, I had exactly the same four years ago and it was not good news.
Get checked out, hopefully if you give the receptionist the heads up you'll be seen quickly, I was seen that afternoon.

Best of luck @Ladybird69 , everything crossed here.

Gymnopedie · 26/10/2026 16:05

A few years ago I made a similar post. I got the same replies - GP pronto. Referred on the cancer pathway, but it turned out to be a thickened womb lining and a cyst. Put on watch and wait, and it cleared up on its own by the 3 month follow up. You must get it checked. You may not be as lucky as I was, but I hope you are.

Ladybird69 · 26/10/2026 16:13

bless you @Happyjoe
@Gymnopedie oh wow, thank you for sharing that. So glad that it wasn’t really serious for you. Omg didn’t cross my mind about cancer.

Yes let us know how you get on. Good luck.

Gymnopedie · 26/10/2026 19:07

@Ladybird69

I'm not sure they realy thought it was cancer, it was a 'just in case' and the doctor admitted that it was largely just to get me seen sooner.

Ladybird69 · 26/10/2026 20:24

Thank you @Sarah2891
@Gymnopedie oh thank you that is good to know and good to know that they are on the ball. I shouldn’t think it’s anything just a little glitch.

I had this as well.
I had a scan which showed a suspicious area in my uterus.
I then had a hysteroscopy and biopsy under anaesthetic.
Happily it was just a polyp.
Good luck OP.

It was the first thing that came to my mind - but then when this happened to someone I know, turned out it was cervical cancer. You must get it checked. She ignored it for too long unfortunately.

Boreded · 27/10/2026 01:19

Doctor ASAP - it might not be a period…it most likely isn’t something sinister, but equally it could be.

StarlightLady · 27/10/2026 08:03

Good luck with the GP OP ❤️.

To you and others. MN can be great, but cannot by compared with 1:1 professional advice. But please report back.

Ladybird69 · 27/10/2026 17:07

Hi I rang surgery first thing and got a call back at 9.30! Dr was lovely and referred me to the two week wait team at the hospital who practically emailed me straight away to say I’ll get an appointment by Thursday. Then I got an email asking me to book for ultrasound which I tried to do but was unable to get through, so I’ll call first thing in the morning. I’m trying not to worry and convincing myself it’s just a little polyp and not a big deal. Thanks everyone ❤️

Good on you for getting it sorted. There is usually a gynae clinic specifically for post menopausal bleeding (I was sent to it in error as I had another issue). If you are sent this type of clinic they may spring a hysteroscopy on you - this is where they put a camera in your uterus to check it out. Usually they don't offer any anaesthetic or sedation. Lots of women are fine with that, some find it excruciating. If you'd rather have general anaesthetic you can absolutely ask for that and they should agree to it. Ignore any pressuring.

Be aware also that the ultrasound may be transvaginal one. I know some women find those terrible too, though I found mine very easy.

Passthecake30 · 27/10/2026 17:18

Good luck OP

leparoo · 27/10/2026 17:43

My gynae said that 90% of referrals and investigations for post meno bleeding end up benign. That is very reassuring.

I had similar to you after 19 years of nothing! I got a big fright, but it was atrophy and a polyp. Thank god. Worst wait of my life those six weeks waiting for pathology.

Best of luck, and it's great that you are on to it straight away and not putting it off. Do let us know how you get on, as posts like this do help other women going through similar. Flowers

dizzydizzydizzy · 27/10/2026 17:50

Yes book in witb a female GP. They will examine you and even if they find nothing untoward, they will refer you to a gynaecologist on a 2 week pathway. This has happened to me several times. It was never anything abnormal but it needs checking in case it is.

EBearhug · 27/10/2026 18:04

If it's a transvaginal ultrasound, you might need to do the first part with a full bladder. I didn't get the letter telling me this until the day after my scan. Fortunately, the car park at the hospital meant I didn't have time to go to the loo before the appointment as I had hoped. I was very relieved when they asked me to go to the loo and come back to do the rest of it with an empty bladder.

Ladybird69 · 27/10/2026 22:25

@Whyarepeople the doctor did say that if they were to do the hysteroscopy that it would be done under general. Thanks for the heads up about the ultrasound.
thanks @Passthecake30
@dizzydizzydizzy the doctor I spoke is the one who deals with women health. She couldn’t examine me as I have a heavy loss and didn’t want to wait until it stops.
thanks @EBearhug hopefully I won’t wet myself!

I had this. Referred for a TV ultrasound. They found (and measured) uterine cysts. I also had a full pelvic exam (palpation) and smear test by a gynae consultant. At the follow up scan three months later, the cysts had been reabsorbed and I was given the all clear.
