Conscription

I know this is hypothetical but I’m so anxious about all the war talk and it got me thinking what would happen if the uk government introduced conscription like would women have to go and leave our children what would happen if we refuse this whole situation is so worrisome ch

Of course our current government wouldn't do that. Reform might though.

2dogsandabudgie · 25/10/2026 16:19

Why are you even worrying about this? If there is a war it will be cyber, not conflict on the ground.

nahlaaaa · 25/10/2026 16:21

There is no way of knowing for sure whether it will be cyber I have a very anxious over thinking mind so I’m thinking of all situations

It wont happen. Wars are not all boots on the ground.
No one is going to be dragging you out of your house, arming you with a gun, and expecting you to shoot other people.

Arlanymor · 25/10/2026 16:22

Defence Minister Lord Coaker confirmed only five days ago that the government has no current plans for compulsory military service. How much more up-to-date do you need the reassurance to be? And in September in the HOC now that I think about it - edited to add that.

nahlaaaa · 25/10/2026 16:23

It’s not reassurance it’s knowing what could potentially happen and no current plans doesn’t mean it won’t happen

I don't know what to tell you then. The government have ruled it out very, very recently and more than once. You're not listening. Fine.

rozdiyle · 25/10/2026 16:25

Don’t be daft. What on earth would the government want with untrained women marching off to war?! WW1 and WW2 were oddities in that there was conscription. It was not used before and it has not been used in the 10 or so wars which Britain has been involved in since then.

GingerIsland · 25/10/2026 16:31

Where would they put all the children if they sent mothers to war?

I think it’s extremely unlikely. And even if it does happen no one is sending mothers of young children to war while they are still responsible for the children.

Where do you think you would be sent to? In order for another country to invade this one they would have to cross the channel first. Any drones or bombs would be destroyed in the channel before they reached here.

vodkaredbullgirl · 25/10/2026 16:37

Will not happen.

Dontcallmescarface · 25/10/2026 16:45

Women with children won't get "called up".

1dayatatime · 25/10/2026 16:46

OK - firstly it will absolutely not happen. Recent surveys show that even with conscription the majority of 18-35 year old men would refuse to fight regardless of the situation.

But playing along with your hypothetical scenario- if you are female 18-35 and without children and there is conscription for men then yes there absolutely should be conscription for women as well.

The difficulty is what happens when the woman has children? They could live with grandparents or some state provided accommodation/ education- a boarding school for example.

But all of the above is complete hypothetical bollocks because conscription won't happen for either men or women. But if it did then it should equally apply to both sexes.

Argostoys · 25/10/2026 16:58

The army don’t want conscription so it’s very unlikely.

1dayatatime · 25/10/2026 17:33

I always thought that the US GI Bill was a great idea for military recruitment. I understand that it already exists in sponsored University places etc but these are for very limited numbers and for specific courses.

You could have a set up
where the UK Government would pay for your entire university fees for whatever course you do in return for a 2 year service from 18 to 20. You could limit it to say 5 to 10,000 intake per year in order to make it competitive so that the military only take the most suitable.

What happens if the men have children?

Even during WW2 single fathers were not conscripted.

Redheadedstepchild · 25/10/2026 17:56

With the difficulty my young relative is having trying to join the army by his own free will, at considerable personal expense, money, time, travel and so on, despite being of more than average intelligence, hard working - he helps out his dad in the building trade and so on, physically fit - he was also accepted for the youth training academy of Chelsea football club at one stage, I doubt that they'll be dragging us out of our beds soon.

Latest hurdle: "You're absolutely top notch son but come back once you've had your tooth braces taken off."

So that's the secret. To avoid being deployed to the meat grinder of the entirely fictional Russian front, get orthodontic treatment.

Needmorelego · 25/10/2026 17:56

The last time the UK had conscription for women (WW2) women with children were not conscripted.
That's not something that will ever happen.
The only country that has compulsory military service for females is (I believe) Israel.
However women with children are exempt.

Yes the new generation is weak and self entitled sadly no pride or respect for the country that treats them like babies

somanychristmaslights · 26/10/2026 07:54

It won’t be full on hand to hand combat like previous wars. Everyone has big powerful bombs now, we’ll all be wiped out just sitting at home. There is absolutely nothing any of us can do about any of this so just enjoy your life and make the most of it!!

Lemieux7 · 26/10/2026 07:57

There are many things to worry about in relation to how shit life currently is in the Uk (which largely has to do with voting choices).

Conscription isn’t one of them.

MajorSamanthaCarter · 26/10/2026 08:08

I'm pretty certain that the women of mn who hide behind their sofas sobbing and shaking when the doorbell rings, won't let workmen use their toilet, can't decide what to have for dinner etc, etc will not be first to be called to the front lines if war breaks out.
