Outside of the emergency services, which jobs do you think show up the worst in people?

I've said outside the emergency services (police/ambulance) because it's generally expected to see high numbers of awful behaviour through crime/pain/emergency situations etc.

Which jobs do you think see the worst in people? I work in catering and was thinking this today as we regularly have rude, entitled people who can generally look down their nose at you which i had a lot of today. Obviously jobs have good and bad customers/guests/clients but what are the worst in your opinion?

It has to be retail or maybe private security for money in particular where all the crime gangs try to rob you.

TheImpOfThePerverse2026 · 24/10/2026 20:39

Hospitality definitely. I've always said every person should work a stint in this sector to appreciate how horrendous it is.

Journalism / news reporting can be pretty heavy, dealing with a lot of sometimes awful and sad news and court cases etc

CatamaranViper · 24/10/2026 20:42

Retail or hospitality...basically anything where you deal with customers face to face I think

I'm intrigued about the private security and crime gangs? 🤔

I was cabin crew for ten years, examples are:
stepping over a lady who had fainted after landing to get off
hitting each other over the head with wine bottles
throwing water on each other
calling me a c* because I asked them to wait for a change of seat as not everyone had boarded

Most public facing roles will have similar stories

TheZingyFish · 24/10/2026 20:43

Education, appalling behaviour and abuse from students and their parents that would not be tolerated in most jobs, yet expected to get on with it. Then society believes you’re lazy and that anyone can do your job despite the fact that the profession is losing so many people due to the abuse and burn out.

I work in cannabis retail, it's crazy how 97% of customers are great, but that 3% can have you questioning your choices so hard!

You’re a drug dealer?

DewDropsAndCobWebs · 24/10/2026 20:49

@FreshInk I mean, it's all legal here, government taxes, inspected and traced.
Do you call your liquor store workers bootleggers?

No. But, as MN is a U.K. site it was a reasonable assumption that you live/work in the U.K.

Veraandacupoftea · 24/10/2026 20:56

education

I don’t think that any other profession would put up with the horrific abuse (mainly from parents) but also kicking biting and spitting from children and be expected to not only be completely professional, but continue working with them for the year , and have every single word and conversation scrutinised.

if an adult behaved that way in any other setting, they would be banned/ barred from the service with a zero tolerance to abusing staff - but the education system seems to take it (potentially why it continues to happen)

DewDropsAndCobWebs · 24/10/2026 20:57

Haha, that's why I said retail, I mean in a legitimate store

Being housekeeping in a hotel or cleaning a private villa.

The most respectable people will trash a hotel room. Doesn't matter to them. Never coming here again.

The private villa crowd. If they think you don't speak/understand their language can come out with some pretty outrageous remarks as you're trying to clean around them as they keep messing up the bit you just did.

"Nice legs. Look better round my neck."
"Is IT going to clean the windows, jiggle jiggle."

The women can be a bit, "Here's our left over food! A low alcohol beer, some wine that's turned to vineger with a lopsided cork in and an opened margerine tub with crumbs in! Do you like soya yoghurt? Help yourself to the flat diet coke! I made a lovely salad three days ago. Still in the fridge. Don't be shy!"
