Outside of the emergency services, which jobs do you think show up the worst in people?

I've said outside the emergency services (police/ambulance) because it's generally expected to see high numbers of awful behaviour through crime/pain/emergency situations etc.

Which jobs do you think see the worst in people? I work in catering and was thinking this today as we regularly have rude, entitled people who can generally look down their nose at you which i had a lot of today. Obviously jobs have good and bad customers/guests/clients but what are the worst in your opinion?

Education, appalling behaviour and abuse from students and their parents that would not be tolerated in most jobs, yet expected to get on with it. Then society believes you’re lazy and that anyone can do your job despite the fact that the profession is losing so many people due to the abuse and burn out.

I just wanted to say that most of us totally and utterly appreciate our teachers. It’s a challenging and intense job and for most of us parents (hopefully) it also has a big heart because it’s helping and caring for our children. I really, really think that most parents think you are fab. Sadly, the minority have the loudest and harshest voices. I cringe when other parents send emails to the school complaining about minor issues - like they are perfect!

Local government - both the way the councillors behave is often outrageous and members of the public behaviour too. There is the blanket assumption you must be stupid to work in local government (despite councils employing very highly qualified professionals!). Local government officers are also very constrained in what they can do without council approval so there is a lot of abuse from the public without an understanding of the process.

I'm shocked.. it's a long time since I was working, I hadn't realised things had got SO bad in almost every walk of life.
Thank you all for doing what you do.

Working in a Jobcentre / Benefit Office gives you an insight into things you’d rather not know

Traffic wardens/ parking enforcement officers get a raw deal as their job is considered unwanted by the recipient of the ticket.

Teacher, vile kids vile parents lots of paper work. No discipline, being used as a punch bag.

From what I've read on this post basically any job where you have to deal with people! Entitled and selfish people are becoming more common and empathy and manners are out of the window!

Rockpunkdisco · 25/10/2026 18:23

Education

Retail

Anywhere you have to deal with the public face to face!

I'm intrigued about the private security and crime gangs? 🤔

Higher rate of assault than emergency workers but lower level of conviction.

Same shit. Less protection

JLou08 · 25/10/2026 18:46

Social services (not an emergency service although people sometimes think it is). Night shifts in a supermarket. Bar work.

DemBonesDemBones · 25/10/2026 18:48

Hospitality and retail. Especially at Christmas.

I work in financial services. Life insurance or the prospect of a significant amount of money brings out the very worst in people and I am often surprised at how badly people can behave. Taking advantage of elderly relatives, cutting siblings out of wills etc. People can be really awful and sometimes it is the most educated people who behave like this.

Cyclebabble · 25/10/2026 18:52

My sister in law used to work in care. Abuse and assault were common from some patients and sexual abuse was also a real problem. Most of the workers were not from the UK and therefore did not feel able to complain and their employers did nothing about it.

Customer service for a social housing provider. People would start screaming and making threats on the phone when they couldn't get what they wanted. One caller told me that nobody with any morals would work for my organisation. When I said I would end the call because of his rudeness, he was most surprised. He said it's not like he swore at me and I must hear worse all the time!

Constantrunner · 25/10/2026 20:01

Job centre staff. There is a reason they have security standing around.

Orangebadger · 25/10/2026 20:06

Anything dealing with the general public. Retail, hospitality, hotels, bus drivers I imagine deal with an awful lot of crap, teachers, nurses and all HCPs, flight attendants…

The airport, you may think I'm being silly but just hear me out. Selfish men letting their missus's struggle to put a bag on the self weigh scales whilst they are scrolling their phones. People getting too blotto to actually be able to string a sentence together thus being too drunk to board at like 7 in the morning causing delays in some cases. This is just a couple of examples but I've now seen it all the selfishness and entitlement of some people in an airport is out of this world.

Sunbringer · 25/10/2026 23:00

When I was a journalist I got regular rape and death threats sent to me by any means possible for simple things like someone I interviewed saying that they liked C country the least or reporting on a study stating what women found attractive in men.

So I’d say journalism. Because sending a 22 year old journo a graphic description of how you’d rape her followed by posting a photo of her to your Instagram page telling other men to rape her because she reported that a study of X women said they liked men without muscles was apparently completely expected and reasonable.

Notanotherrestructure · 25/10/2026 23:00

Social work for sure, especially child protection. Abuse from everyone including the media. Can’t do anything right and all for an average wage.

GiddyBear · 25/10/2026 23:51

Receptionist in GP surgery …

Before you are rude or abusive to someone in customer services remember that they have your phone number! Years ago when faxes were still a thing I had a fax modem in my computer. One customer spoke to me like I was shit. I arranged for him to be phoned by the fax every hour for an entire weekend.

When I ring out on my land line it comes up as "private number" so no one can play that trick on me.
