For me it's "Leaving on a jet plane". What songs did your folk really like ?

Sugar baby love by The Rubettes (my mum)
I'm gonna be by The Proclaimers (my dad)

Mum used to sing while doing chores around the house and her favourite song was Que Sera, Sera. My sister chose it to be played at Mum’s funeral. If ever I hear it now I think of them both, as my sister also died a few years ago. I miss them both very much.

Schubert's impromptu number 3. Played whilst mum was in the hospice and at her funeral.
I'm trying to learn it but it's fiendishly difficult as is most Schubert.

Glen Campbell Wichita Lineman 😢

PauliesWalnuts · 24/10/2026 14:30

My mum and dad used to sing “Danny Boy” to my brother after bath time. They are all long gone and the song makes me smile and cry at the same time.

HobgoblinNorFoulFiend · 24/10/2026 14:42

My dad played Kristofferson’s Loving Her Was Easier for my mum’s funeral so that.

Ayarreet · 24/10/2026 14:42

Dad - Begin the Beguine. He taped himself singing along to it on my new stereo radio cassette, he loved the little microphone and any new gadgets so he'd been playing with it in the run up to Christmas while I was at school, Xmas morning we all fell about laughing at Dad's crooning interspersed with him swearing, BASTARD THING, as he pressed the wrong buttons😂

Mam - Climb every Mountain. She took me to the pictures 6 times to see Sound of Music and used to sing songs from it as she peeled the taties. I remember reading my Yogi Bear Annual and interrupting her to ask what myrrh-ring-you meant.
"spell it' she said
m-e-r-i-n-g-u-e 😊

Another John Denver classic, Country Roads…JD provided the in car soundtrack to family holidays. Annie’s Song was a special favourite of my late Mum.

The one song that always has me in floods is “In The Bleak Midwinter”. My Mum was a big fan of singing that but only knew the first line….so it went “In the bleak midwinter, yakky dakky dooo”. It drove us crazy but whenever I hear it now I wish she was here to sing it. That scene at the end of the Ghosts Christmas Special where Alison sings at the piano…fetch the tissues!

Smoke Gets In Your Eyes by The Platters. And Those Were the Days by Mary Hopkins.

90s pop songs released around Christmas remind me of my estranged mum

I have a dream, seasons in the sun - westlife

Thanks everyone. So many of these songs you are giving were played when I was little too. Very moving.

After the Gold Rush by Neil Young reminds me of my dad - we had a complicated relationship but it gets me every time.

rightoguvnor · 24/10/2026 16:05

This one’s rather elderly
Little Things Mean a Lot by Kitty Kallen

CharlotteStreetW1 · 24/10/2026 16:09

Winter's Tale by David Essex. My classical-loving mum had nothing but contempt for pop music but that one somehow must have touched a nerve because she loved it.

With my dad it was the soundtrack to Oklahoma!

Just the thought of this song makes me cry and think of my Mum so I am already tearing up just thinking about it.

But its 'Bridge over Troubled Water' by Simon and Garfunkle.

We were really really close my Mum and I. When I was 24 I lost my first baby and nearly died myself. When recovering at home and heartbroken over losing my Son, she held me as I sobbed.

This song came on the radio and my Mum told me to listen to the words, as this is how she feels about me.💔She then went on to tell me that she would always be my rock and would always pick me up when I fell. I never felt more loved than by my Mother.

She has been gone a few years now but I only have to hear the opening of this and it reduces me to an emotional mess.

This has made me laugh.

My Dad ALWAYS used to say 'BASTARD THING' when he was annoyed at something. It was a running joke in our family 😂

pilates · 24/10/2026 16:20

Mum - Frank Sinatra - any song
Dad - Glen Campbell Rhinestone Cowboy

Owhatfuckeryisthis · 24/10/2026 17:17

My mum always said she was tone deaf and never sang around the house. My dad though sang when he was happy. He had a fine tenor and sang songs from his youth, particularly fond of Ink Spots and Louis Armstrong(doing tge voice and mannerisms) . He woukd have been a kareoke star!He always got lyrics on pop songs wrong, used to make me cringe, but now I know he was doing it to wind me up.

Springbuck · 24/10/2026 18:29

My parents divorced when I was very young. They’re both gone now.
Dad was an alcoholic and homeless for long periods.
Jerry Walker - Mr Bojangles always makes me think of him.

Perry Como - For the good times was my mums all time favourite song. Luckily it’s not commonly played now as it always reduces me to a snivelling mess.

EmptyInTheValley · 24/10/2026 18:33

Happiness by Ken Dodd and Edelweiss from The Sound of Music.

EmptyInTheValley · 24/10/2026 18:36

And Morningtown Ride by The Seekers.

DancingInTheMoonlights · 24/10/2026 18:38

Danny Boy - my dad would sing it whilst shaving at the sink. We played it at his funeral. Makes me tear up every time I hear it. Lovely memories.
