For me it's "Leaving on a jet plane". What songs did your folk really like ?

Isn’t she lovely? by Stevie Wonder. Mum always used to say she’d find my dad singing it to me and my sister when we were little, and he thought no one was listening.

squashyhat · 24/10/2026 18:42

My Dad always used to whistle or sing when doing the washing up, but it was the same few lines over and over and OVER again Grin . Used to drive us all batty. I remember something about "seventy six trombones" which was an earworm for my family before we knew the word.

Edited to say I found it on YouTube. Just as irritating now as 50 years ago! 😡

The folks who live on the hill ,, 😢

I've no fond memories of my mother and I can't honestly say I ever heard her say she liked a song.

My dad loved Jim Reeves so any time I hear one of his songs it reminds me of him.

Mum used to sing while doing chores around the house and her favourite song was Que Sera, Sera. My sister chose it to be played at Mum’s funeral. If ever I hear it now I think of them both, as my sister also died a few years ago. I miss them both very much.

My mum too. Lovely memories

Rossforthewin · 24/10/2026 19:09

The Ink Spots for dad and all the war time songs for mum, but not Vera lynn. She couldn’t bear her

Jim Reeves “ I love you because “.

Chose it for Mum’s funeral, plus the hymn Ar Hyd y Nos in remembrance of Dad who passed away 37 years earlier.

Lili Marlene for both parents. My Dad had a pleasant voice and would sing snippets of opera . My mother couldn't sing a note but she liked 'Goodbye to love' by the Carpenters and that always makes me cry, as does 'Something stupid' by Frank and Nancy Sinatra. So many songs affect me now for many reasons and I don't like listening to music much.

My Mum had “The Last Farewell” on 7”. She played it on repeat on the family record player in the lounge until the sun shining through the adjacent French windows warped it. She died in 1991, but that song always reminds me of her.

My Dad used to sing to us & had eclectic taste, everything from Gilbert & Sullivan “Green Grow the Rushes” from The Yeoman of the Guard, Handel’s Messiah “O we like sheep” to old music hall favourite Leslie Sarony’s “Susanna’s a Fumical Sow” & The Goons’ “The Ying Tong Song”. Then in the 70s The Hollies released “All I Need Is the Air That I Breathe”. He absolutely loves that song & it always reminds me of him.

And Morningtown Ride by The Seekers.

This was another one my Dad used to sing to my brothers and me.

grafittiartist · 24/10/2026 21:42

Mum would sing hymns whilst she washed up.
I heard the song “I know I’ll never find another you” by the Seekers the other day- just brought back memories of my dad.
What a nice thread!

scalt · 24/10/2026 21:43

@EmptyInTheValley Another vote for Morningtown Ride - I adore that song, especially the line “underneath their blankets go all the girls and boys”.

Also the Israeli Boat Song. There was a beautiful version of it performed on Play School by Toni Arthur.

BrokenWing · 24/10/2026 21:54

There are so many songs from their era that they played and/or sang around the house, they enjoyed quite a bit of country Kenny Rodger’s, tammy Wynette etc. Very irritating at the time, especially on a Sunday morning when I had a hangover, but I would love to hear them just one more time 🩷

Dad - Sinatra - any song really
Mum - The Rose, The Old Rugged Cross, Stand by your man

TheImpOfThePerverse2026 · 24/10/2026 21:54

My dad used to sing 'Save all your kisses for me'

I love my dad ❤️

After the Gold Rush by Neil Young reminds me of my dad - we had a complicated relationship but it gets me every time.

We played the Kings Singers version of this at mum's funeral in 2009 - a few of my family are still traumatised by it being the Kings Singers version, rather than the Neil Young one. Either version was too much for me to hear for years, but a year and a bit ago (when my dad was dying) I listened to it on repeat, and sobbed my fucking heart out.

"There was a band playing in my head, and I felt like getting high"

prampushingdownthehighst · 24/10/2026 22:02

The euro vision song winner the week I was born
Vikki Leandros, Come what May always reminded my Dad of me being born and.now of course, I remember him
Also as a previous poster suggests Kitty Kallen, Little Things, My parents favourite song

habitati · 24/10/2026 22:10

DM liked and still plays:

You Can’t Hurry Love - The Supremes
I’m Still Waiting - Diana Ross

Was estranged from my Dad from 5, and he’s now gone, but Sitting on the Dock of the Bay, Lean on me, and anything Beatles.

Jibbee · 24/10/2026 22:20

Mum- Frank Sinatra
Dad- ‘ I was born under a wandering Star’

Ilikebluewhataboutyou · 24/10/2026 22:31

My dad loved cruising and at his funeral we ended with 'Sea Cruise' by Cliff Richard. Always makes me think of him if I hear it.

FieldofMusic · 24/10/2026 22:39

My late dad's favourite song was Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straits, more than 30 years since we lost him, much too young, and it still makes me cry 😢
