Tesco delivery shelf life

Anyone noticed if the shelf life on Tesco products is getting shorter?

I’ve just had a delivery and the mince expires in 2 days! Having a look online I missed the short shelf life!

Surely that’s pretty poor? I get that the shoppers don’t pick the longest shelf life and that’s for me to do in store, but 2 days for mince seems rubbish!

How does anyone do a weekly shop without freezing everything?

and don’t get me started on my 1 day self life strawberries!

Had a delivery on Sunday and 3 items were dated the same day. They did refund however. Never been a problem before.

BashfulClam · 16/10/2026 15:51

Yes lately they have all been short dates. They used to be gone. We had to hand back 3 items last week at the door.

chattyness · 16/10/2026 15:53

I get a refund if I can't use quickly or freeze. I want my bread and baked items to be fresh not nearly out of date, same for fish and some fruit & veg. It really annoys me, as when in store they would be in the reduced to clear section, so you know it's short dated & can get money off at least. But home delivery customers are expected to still pay full price or hand it back to the driver and get a refund. They know a lot of people won't bother.

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 16/10/2026 15:55

It's happening more and more. I heard Brexit is to blame.

ThatGladTiger · 16/10/2026 16:01

I don’t always have time to check on delivery.

They refunded my bread after I text them which expires today - but said mince (2 days) fish (2 days) and strawberries (1 day) is as advertised. And then suggested I write a note on each item asking them to pick long dates.

Has anyone tried this? Does it work?

I’m a picker at a supermarket and tbh it pisses me off when people wrote a note to pick the longest date. That is literally our job. We are supposed to pick the best date. We are also supposed to click to notify the customer if it’s short dated so you can choose to reject the item at delivery. I understand some pickers don’t give a shit but it comes back to our line manager if we constantly send out bad dates that customers are complaining about. It does seem more likely that in store stock is the issue. It is not green the case that our choice is poor and we pick from 4:30am when the delivery from the night before hasn’t been split for stocking, we are still picking from the day before chill deliverys.

ThatGladTiger · 16/10/2026 16:40

@remotescontrol can you please be my packer 🙏

I guess I’m just more frustrated of what is an acceptable shelf life these days!

I hadn’t even thought that they would be in the reduced pile if it was in store! I always go back and I do get a refund. Just not when it’s advertised as 1 day shelf life 😩

I’ve noticed this for over a year .. bloody cheek with their prices .

dizzydizzydizzy · 16/10/2026 16:49

Tesco is appalling at stock rotation so I am not surprised. I regularly go in there to buy milk and find there will be milk of 3 different dates on the shelf and it is all jumbled up. I always rifle through it to find the freshest.

We don’t pick from the reduced section though, we pick from the shelf. So if it’s in the reduced section in store for customers it’s also not available for us to pick as we do not pick from reduced stock.

Badbadbunny · 16/10/2026 16:51

Just give it back to the delivery guy and they'll refund.

Or if you didn't notice, give the customer services number a ring and they'll refund it (and let you keep it).

We get something refunded almost every delivery when the life is too short.

Sorry wasn’t implying this. The stuff that’s refunded that goes off today would have ended up with a yellow sticker at some point that day if it hadn’t been picked for me!

I do that every time.

Today they told me they couldn’t refund mince with a 2 day shelf life as that’s what it’s advertised at. Was just wondering when mince beef only had a two day shelf life??

Iceland are also bad at this. Brought a salad pack on the Saturday it was mouldy by Monday 🤢🤢 i did complain to customer service and got a refund.
Morrisons are the best 🙏🤞 for long use by dates. Most of my fresh stuff has at least 5 days to use.

FFSItsTooHot · 16/10/2026 17:35

This is the one thing that pisses me off about supermarket home deliveries. I'm sure the shoppers deliberately pick the item with the shortest sell by/use by dates as they know that most people can't be bothered to complain!

BluebellBeth · 16/10/2026 17:51

Yes we definitely had an issue with this for a while but it seems to have been better the last few weeks. One things that's still an issue though is my carrots are always floppy and useless after a couple of days.

You don't though.

I do a weekly shop at Tesco Online, as I'm still learning to drive after moving from a city to rural. The Tesco branch is absolutely massive and I can't believe there's a stock problem. Because of the poor expiry dates, I always end up with 3 days worth of food, then that's it, the rest has to be thrown or frozen in advance. If I don't have freezer space, then that's it, I've lost my money.

I don’t what?

Itsthewoluff · 16/10/2026 18:20

I’ve refused to accept quite a lot of meat stuff over the last few months. It’s particularly annoying as I often put on a must last until x date, in the notes.

The problem there is if we don’t have the date you request we have to pick what is considered reasonable according the days given on the website when you order, we can’t just put unavailable if there is an item on the shelf. If you want mince dated for 5 days and Tesco online says 3 days I have to give you the mince that has 3/4 days on it. I’m not allowed to off sale something thats on the shelf.

I have stopped getting Tesco collections because of this OP. I went onto their WhatsApp and sent photographs of the short dated items, I hadn't been advised they were short dated. Mine were mince and chicken, i froze the mince same day and on defrosting it unfortunately it was off. Everything was refunded.

Tesco and Morrisons seem to have went the same road of chucking any old produce in your order. I had mouldy garlic x 2 in one! How does garlic go mouldy?

Anyway i have been going into store for my shop and i have noticed at Tesco they have only a certain number of packets out for salad etc and they are short dated. They keep additional packs in refrigerated cupboards underneath. I understand this is to prevent food waste and stop customers rummaging for longer dates, but at the moment if you want fresh produce it's better to shop for every couple of days.

So even if there is something with a 6 day shelf life on the packet for example, you’re not allowed to pick it if it says 2 days online?

Yes of course we can, I’m saying we can’t do the opposite.

bugaboo218 · 16/10/2026 19:46

Yes. Have stopped my Tesco online delivery because of this. It annoyed me so much.
