Tesco delivery shelf life

Anyone noticed if the shelf life on Tesco products is getting shorter?

I’ve just had a delivery and the mince expires in 2 days! Having a look online I missed the short shelf life!

Surely that’s pretty poor? I get that the shoppers don’t pick the longest shelf life and that’s for me to do in store, but 2 days for mince seems rubbish!

How does anyone do a weekly shop without freezing everything?

and don’t get me started on my 1 day self life strawberries!

I've never had a Tesco delivery but a lot of stuff on the shelf has a really short shelf life, especially cold meats.

I am not surprised at the poor dates. I gave up on home delivery because of this. A friend of mine is a picker for home shopping. She says that she has 11 minutes for each shop and she is reprimanded if she takes longer.

In Tesco we have a pick rate not a timer as each trolley is variable, you cannot set a timer as some trolleys are 25 items and some are 125. The pick rate is not as important as people would have you believe. The only way you are getting pulled up is if you are consistently very slow. You are either needing support, not very good or spending time chatting. Managers understand that our pick rate at 5am cannot be maintained all day as when the shop floor starts to get footfall it becomes harder to pick freely. At 3pm on a Saturday afternoon pick rate is unlikely to be achieved as the store is so busy you cannot move quickly and safely. You are far more likely to get reprimanded for sending out poor dates leaving to customer complaints than your pick rate.

The problem there is if we don’t have the date you request we have to pick what is considered reasonable according the days given on the website when you order, we can’t just put unavailable if there is an item on the shelf. If you want mince dated for 5 days and Tesco online says 3 days I have to give you the mince that has 3/4 days on it. I’m not allowed to off sale something thats on the shelf.

But if I’ve said it must last till x date on the notes, then if it doesn’t then I don’t want it. If you then pick something with a shorter date I’m unlikely to accept it.
What happens to the stuff that is rejected? Presumably it can’t go back on sale?

This was happening to me but for the regular culprits (bread and meat) I always put a 'few days date please' in the notes now and it definitely works.

PDAblues · 16/10/2026 23:18

My mince delivered this evening has a 2 day date.

When I've put comments in the notes (not about BBE dates but about varieties of fruit) they've been completely ignored.

Thanks for posting OP as I will check now.

Yup it’s as if nobody ever bothers to read my notes.

We don’t pick from the reduced section though, we pick from the shelf. So if it’s in the reduced section in store for customers it’s also not available for us to pick as we do not pick from reduced stock.

The point is that short dated stuff should have been in the reduced section and not in on the shelf for pickers to add to home delivery.

I use Asda. Recently I had some chicken thighs that were 4 days out of date. Also I get a family member some ready made meals and one was 2 days. Lots short dates too. I do complain and get refunds. Horrified me that an older person could have this and not notice and posion themselves.

Yes I picked that up incorrectly

But strawberries dated tomorrow won’t be in the reduced section. Soft fruits usually have a pretty short shelf life anyway and I imagine don’t go to reduced until near closing time on the day of expiry.

I have to pick the item you order if it is there and falls within the amount of days the website has told you though. If you choose a product that says ‘3 days’ then that’s what you get, 3 days (or more if available) - if you just decide you don’t want that because you prefer 5 days there isn’t anything I can do. I would say in that instance it line shopping is not for you. I cannot click ‘unavailable’ on the pick stick if the item is there and fits the advertised amount of days available.

I have no idea what happens to things that are rejected by customers, I work on the shop floor picking, they would be delay with by drivers not me.

SheilaFentiman · 17/10/2026 15:29

I would assume most can be put back in store if rejected at the door by the customer, as it has been refrigerated in the delivery van. More often I assume the customer complains after checking their unpacked shopping and then it’s easier for the store to refund but let the customer keep it.

Itsthewoluff · 17/10/2026 18:41

I would assume they couldn’t.

Why would you assume they couldn’t?
