They are nosy and have no time for things like house ownership so I’d say it’s pretty common.

CandyCrushLevel14809 · 14/10/2026 18:46

My previous neighbour’s cats always came into my house, I couldn’t leave the back door or kitchen window open.
I thought it was just that cat’s personality rather than a new trend in cat behaviour. Don’t they just do what the hell they like the wee furry anarchists!

Snowyowl99 · 14/10/2026 18:46

Lucky you lol!
Seriously though, some curious , friendly cats do like to have a look around others homes in my experience anyway . It's happened to me for years. Although one ended up was a poor wee stray that was desperate for food. So we found him a loving home. So do look out for them if they ate struggling

I hope so! We have three that sit outside and miaow but never come in.

Anabolicanna · 14/10/2026 18:47

Yes but since getting a DDog it’s stopped.

Iloveeverycat · 14/10/2026 18:49

I would say so. Do you have cats yourself. They just come in my cat flap. I try to keep it locked when my cat is inside asleep but he knows that when I go out the cat flap will be open so he comes straight in.

AveragePotato · 14/10/2026 18:49

Our neighbour's cat comes in occasionally to hiss at us and if anyone tries to shoo her out she'll claw you. I haven't gone as far as keeping a water pistol by the window but I'm close to it!

TheChosenTwo · 14/10/2026 18:50

I don’t think our neighbours have cats thank god, a cat would most definitely not be welcome in our house!

Dragonscaledaisy · 14/10/2026 18:51

Yes. Sadly, it can be the reason they are killed by dogs.

Goldensprat · 14/10/2026 18:53

We used to have a lovely little cat who would come visiting and play with the kids. We liked her so much we got our own cat, but the first time neighbour cat saw him she turned tail and scarpered and never came for a visit again. 😞

We still see her out and about though, she's still a lovely friendly thing.

NuffSaidSam · 14/10/2026 18:53

I think it depends on the cat, it's not unheard of. My neighbors have three cats between them. One is super shy and would never come in. One comes in any chance it gets. The third one sits on the windowsill and looks in, but has yet to actually come in.

Bogstandardname · 14/10/2026 18:55

In the summer when the garden doors are left open, we have at least three little felines who come to visit. I love to see them.

RaraRachael · 14/10/2026 18:58

My neighbours used to leave their front door wide open then complain that my cat went in their house.

Ved · 14/10/2026 19:05

Yep! Cheeky wee feckers they are. They do what they want!

Our last cat died in Autumn 2025, and after 30 years of having cats (we had 4 in total over those years) we decided to not have any more.

Around March/April this year, we started to get regular visits from a young cat from 5-6 doors down. The owners are rarely in as they both work full time, and he has started to come every day, sometimes letting himself in through the back door if it's open, and he just sits there purring, rubbing himself up against us, and sometimes begging for food.. We gave him a few little treats as we still had some (unopened) left from our cats. BIG mistake. We can't get rid of the little shit now. 😆 He sometimes stays 5-6 hours. Just sitting on a stool, or on the hall carpet! Sleeping and purring. OR he stays in the garden with me when I'm in it.

In addition, another cat comes from that same house. One a bit older and bigger... Not as often, and not for 5-6 hours at a time, but some days. Also begging. She just comes and sits on the couch or one of the dining chairs, as if she owns the place. DH went to pet her (the older one,) the 4th or 5th time she came, and she hissed at him. Absolute cheek. Comes into our home, begs food, then hisses when he touches her.

Cats are bastards! 😂

The small cat is very friendly and loving though.. And Little Miss Hissy is pretty friendly most of the time...

Still, it's kinda nice having the company of them without the actual commitment of owning a cat, and no vet bills and the like.... And the owners are happy for them to come - (we did check!) They are actually relieved that we don't mind!

My silly cat got herself trapped under my neighbours bed, they had to come and get me at 11pm as they couldn’t get her out! My other girl likes to jump on next door’s conservatory roof and peer in the upstairs windows 😂

cats love a nosey!

catspyjamas1 · 14/10/2026 19:17

First post nails it!

My old neighbour used to send me photos of my cat in various parts of their house. Made himself right at home and since they've moved, he still looks at their front door hoping to pop in for a visit. Luckily, he's a great cat and they loved him, especially the kids.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 14/10/2026 19:22

I think that it depends entirely on their personality. We had two brother/sister cats growing up. Girl cat avoided people like the plague, unless you were Chosen Ones (a girl after my own heart!). Boy cat would go off out and spend weekdays with a newly-retired neighbour (and would sit waving at us from the front window) and weekends with our next-door neighbour (whose wife was allergic to cats). In between, he would spend time with his friend cat (who was known to wait outside our house for him, if we were late up), and they enjoyed sunbathing on people's driveways together.

We occasionally had curious cats looking through open windows, but they never came in... probably because we were cautious about leaving windows open, in case our cats brought live victims in for a bit of sport. I do not miss the days of trying to get birds out of the dining room, or seeing deceased mice shooting out from under the sofa, and once they had been devoured, the resulting vomit down the back of the radiators 😫

Greenseawitch · 14/10/2026 20:34

I have my own cat but the neighbour's cat started coming into my house as soon as I moved in.

He comes in everyday and samples whatever food my cat has left and does a little tour of the house and also spends time sleeping in my garden and drinks from my little pond.

Thankfully he gets on well with my cat.

Namechange564743 · 14/10/2026 20:52

I didn't realise it was (I previously thought they were all like the haughty, stand-offish stereotype), until about six months ago when we started to come across the cat that had recently moved in a couple of doors down.

I was never previously a cat person, but she is the most adorable little thing. We first noticed her sitting on the window ledge and at our back door, meowing to be let in. She has come in a few times, often when the door is open and our backs are turned! (E.g. putting things in the car or taking in a supermarket delivery!). She generally has a good look around, sniffing out all the dark corners.

When she sees us going out/coming home, she instantly runs over to us and begs to be stroked; often rolls over baring her belly like a dog. She's also followed us to the corner shop before 🤣

CaptainMyCaptain · 14/10/2026 20:54

As Rudyard Kipling said 'I am the cat who walks by himself and all places are alike to me'. They do whatever they like.

HelpMeGetThrough · 14/10/2026 21:09

This is what I walk into daily. He’s a neighbours cat and nosy bugger. Often will pop in if the door or window is open. He’s a happy chap and loves a bit of fuss.

Is it normal for neigbhours cats to try to come in to your house.
TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 14/10/2026 21:15

Yes, it's a conspiracy. Cats communicate telepathically and are planning together to infiltrate houses the length and breadth of the country.

He's a beauty

deplorabelle · 14/10/2026 21:25

In our old house we didn't have a single cat proof window so couldn't ventilate the house without next door's cats getting in. I was so miserable every summer having to choose between boiling with the windows shut or being randomly jumped on by fluffy menaces I'm violently allergic to. Awful.
