Yeah I have a cat that’s not my cat. Loves to come in, waltz round the place like he owns it, garden too.
I think it’s a territory thing… if they can come into somewhere, and there are no other cats, it’s theirs!

This is our ex-visitor. Seems there's a black and white theme!

Summer and we’d left a window open, went to the loo at 2am and next door but one’s kitten was curled up in the bathroom. Left it till decent hour then took her back. She’d sneaked past the dogs

I heard a thud in our bedroom this summer and it was next doors cat who had climbed in. He often comes round to visit / shit in our garden.

ButtercupYellow26 · 14/10/2026 21:39

Yes very common.

We were viewing a property for sale recently and were accompanied by a cat who we assumed belonged to a neighbour. He appeared in the garden when we arrived and followed us in! The agent showing us around the property, which was empty, was also charmed by said cat. He was very nosy, investigated each room we were in, it was really sweet. We obviously kept a very close eye on him throughout his 'tour' ! When we were finished, he followed us out and went on his way. I suspect he had been in there before, i think it had been previously rented. He was lovely, it was a memorable viewing 🥰

Used to happen lots, none of these beauties are my cat! We have a new cat on the block who seems to be a bit of a bully and we rarely see any of the neighbourhood cats anymore.

I have two regular visitors. A noisy tom through the back door and a very old lady through the front door. I enjoy the visits as I am unable to have my own cat.

Years ago a very large cat would sit by my front door until I let him in, he would march upstairs for a big sleep in the spare room then march down stairs and demand to be let out...you're welcome...

I would never feed them though.

I live in a terrace and my neighbours cat likes to utilise my house as a shortcut to get from front to back, if their owners aren’t in to help them.

I don’t mind! Happy to have cat visitors.

They are nosy and have no time for things like house ownership so I’d say it’s pretty common.

Love it @Madamswearsalot

Yes. We have three local cats and they frequently attempt to break in.

In our old house we didn't have a single cat proof window so couldn't ventilate the house without next door's cats getting in. I was so miserable every summer having to choose between boiling with the windows shut or being randomly jumped on by fluffy menaces I'm violently allergic to. Awful.

extendible screens would fix that for about £30

Our downstairs neighbour has a young cat that is constantly coming in and stealing food for our resident moggie. Being a grumpy old chap, our cat is not amused and skirmishes occur. Have to keep the door closed now, which is a pain.

My brother is currently fighting off a massive ginger cat that keeps coming into his house. He's always whinging about it. However he also permanently leaves his back door open, thus providing an entry point and has also started feeding it "so it stops yelling at me." But apparently it's victimising him by letting itself into his house twice a day for a snack. Go figure.

Cushionseams · 15/10/2026 08:54

Yes.
We got a microchip catflap installed as it was a number of cats and it bothered ours. One of them figured out how to open it and still comes in, but our cat tolerates him.

Obviously feeding it isn't going to help, but it's a shame that people can't leave their doors and windows open freely w/o uninvited pets wandering in.
I don't own a cat, it's not part of my leaving the house routine to check for cats.

I don't think people should need to spend their own money to deter other people's pets from entering their homes.

Yes, next door had two cats and one of them started coming in as a kitten. He was gorgeous but I did worry that we would shut him in accidentally (we are back door open all day people). He more or less stopped when we got our cats, but still popped by occasionally, one day I was walking past the bottom of the stairs and noticed him sitting there with one of ours on different steps. Their other one took up residence in our greenhouse when they were having building work done. They moved away eventually and no one else close by has had cats since, although the people a few doors down have just acquired a couple so we’ll see, they have been getting chased out of the garden by our two so far.
