My DSis is very much a 'foodie' (as am I!) and is coming over on Sunday for cake and a cup of tea. What interesting cake recipes would you recommend to make? She always likes something that's a bit different or a bit of a talking point.

Mary berry does a lemon and courgette cake which is actually really lovely. Or Nigellas Guinness cake is perhaps more autumnal.

I made Marie Pierre Moine’s Gateau aux Noix…Walnut Cake…for an evening with our neighbours at the weekend and it was fantastic. Photo of the recipe attached. It’s walnut season here at the moment and DH shelled about 600g of whole nuts to yield the 250g that you need for the recipe. I’m definitely going to make it again. If you like chocolate then the chocolate covering is very tasty….but next time I might try a glaze made perhaps with rum.

My other go to for something different is Gateau Nantais. I used the Justin Cooking recipe from YouTube (fine if you speak french!) but this site has an excellent recipe in english (and lots of other interesting looking recipes as well!)

I make a lovely polenta cake based on a Nigella recipe for lemon polenta cake, but I do it with ruby grapefruit instead. I put grapefruit zest and juice in the cake, and make a grapefruit syrup to drizzle liberally over it. I top it with homemade candied rose petals and a mix of slivered almonds and pistachios; sometimes I add strips of candied lemon peel, too. A bit different and always goes down a storm.

Black Forest gateaux. Cannot go wrong with a home made one chez Delia.

Orange scented polenta cake with rosemary, thyme and pistachios is quite unusual. Nadia Hussain.

This is a very interesting cake. A little exacting to make but beautiful to look at and lush.

7 layer honey cake is a show stopper! I had a craving to make it and my daughter was visiting friends for a birthday party so I made it for her take- she sends me screenshots of her friends raving about it a year on!

Salt & Pepper, Olive oil shortbread. It’s amazing! I would recommend the entire book, it’s called Snacking Bakes by Yossy Arefi.

I’m not a baker so can’t offer a recipe but the nicest cake I’ve ever eaten was Rose and pistachio, absolutely gorgeous.

An easy one is to make chocolate cake but to substitute a few spoons of flour with ground hazelnuts. So delish.

Pineapplesunshine · 14/10/2026 00:31

Not sure if it’s foodie but it uses nuts instead of flour so a bit different ? Nicola Humble’s hazelnut cake filled with cream and raspberries. Or I always like a sachertort - I used an old green and blacks recipe - it comes up if you google - and I like it cos you can make it a day or two in advance and it improves.
