Everyone knows that boy/girl twins can’t identical right? Wrong!

Here is my Friday night rant as a mum of twins teenagers who still gets asked if they are identical when the girl/boy twins are standing right in front of them, looking not one bit alike let alone identical. Plus they’re different sexes!

typical conversation-
“oh you have twins, what are they?”
”a boy and a girl”
“lovely, are they identical?”
”no they’re a boy and a girl”
”yeah but are they identical?”

🙄🙄

Ah, but did you know they can be semi identical?

ShitFacedShakespeare · Today 20:08

Never heard of this in my life lol.

Strange people walk among us.

MyCatLovesMeSometimes · Today 20:08

Groan I can really imagine some people asking that but it did make me laugh as an identical twin!

People ask the dumbest questions as soon as they see twins.

My two, 20 months apart, b/g, had remarkably similar faces when they were younger. I was often asked of they were twins.
They're very different now adolescent.

Peoples mouths work faster then their brains it happens to us all at times

I have B/G twins and had this question more than once 😂

My daughter brought a book home from school a few weeks ago featuring identical boy/ girl twins. It's no wonder we have a lot of confused adults on the subject.

Other wild facts I've learned about twins is that there's such thing as semi-identical twins and the Olsens are believed to be non-identical because they had separate amniotic sacs but we now know that doesn't necessarily mean they're non-identical.

DeeNiall · Today 20:19

My sibling and I look very alike and even our parents would get us mixed up unless we were together. We're not twins.

Mumsntfan1 · Today 20:23

Did you have sex twice to get twins?

user293948849167 · Today 20:33

well it doesn’t help when you have books like Topsy and Tim around to confuse people 😆

As a mom to BG twins this is the question that really winds me up 😂😂

Didimum · Today 20:36

I don’t think it’s weird for people to not really think about how twins biologically work unless they have twins.

Shloopie · Today 20:39

About 35 people work in our office. 7 of them have an identical twin. I think that's a lot of twins for one small-ish office.

Yes but if one is a boy and the other is a girl and they ask this, their problem is with the simple word ‘identical’🤦‍♀️

So have I!

My friend used to reply no, that one has a penis and that one doesn’t. She was asked all the time. I have identical girls and have been asked some really dumb things fairly consistently when they were little. A number of times I was asked “were you trying for twins?” - wtf?

LoughboroughBex · Today 20:49

yep, I have girl/boy twin niece and nephew and they got it all the time when they were babies. Less so now they’re a bit older

StockingsByTheFire · Today 20:50

Another one with B/G twins and has this question many times. A fellow twin mum gave me the best response, which I gift to all fellow mums...

"Are they identical?"

"Not from the waist down, dear"

Why would the books confuse people? They are described as fraternal twins

StayCoolLikeAPenguin · Today 20:51

I blame Enid Blyton! She was always having her boy/girl twins looking 'as like as 2 peas in a pod'.

seahorsessky · Today 20:52

Sometimes, when they're small, if styled the same way, people get confused. Not very likely at age 18!

Glazerblazer · Today 20:52

I’d have to say yes.

QueenOfAccountability · Today 20:52

I had this too i just put it down to them being poorly educated and not knowing the meaning of the word identical.

What was even more annoying was the staring at us. Like they were monsters, not twins.

Health47 · Today 20:53

It’s rare but boy and girl twins can be identical
