Everyone knows that boy/girl twins can’t identical right? Wrong!

Here is my Friday night rant as a mum of twins teenagers who still gets asked if they are identical when the girl/boy twins are standing right in front of them, looking not one bit alike let alone identical. Plus they’re different sexes!

typical conversation-
“oh you have twins, what are they?”
”a boy and a girl”
“lovely, are they identical?”
”no they’re a boy and a girl”
”yeah but are they identical?”

🙄🙄

My daughter brought a book home from school a few weeks ago featuring identical boy/ girl twins. It's no wonder we have a lot of confused adults on the subject.

Other wild facts I've learned about twins is that there's such thing as semi-identical twins and the Olsens are believed to be non-identical because they had separate amniotic sacs but we now know that doesn't necessarily mean they're non-identical.

identical twins can have separate sacs. It’s just depends how early the embryo splits.

Yes, that's what I meant- they assumed the Olsen's weren't but now, maybe they are.

50% of people are of less than average intelligence.

That’s not how averages work.

It depends on which type of average.

It was a throw away joke comment - obviously I was referring to the median.

It was a response to someone saying some people were 'at the back of the queue' for brains.

Even twins don’t always know these things. I worked with a teenage girl at my Saturday job in uni. She said her twin sister was coming soon so they could go shopping together. “Are you identical?” I asked.
”No, she has long hair” was the answer.
I couldn’t be bothered explaining!

MIL, who claimed to have a degree in biology once said of DS and oldest DD, who were teenagers at the time “They look so alike they could be twins”
I told her fraternal twins were no more alike than ordinary siblings. “No, they could be identical twins” 🥴

As an aside, some of the posters on this thread might find ‘The Accidental Twins’ interesting; it’s a documentary film on Netflix. It tells the story of two sets of identical twins boys born a day apart in Columbia in the 80s. A mix up at a hospital resulted in the twins being mismatched and therefore two of the boys being raised by the wrong families (and obviously none of the boys growing up with their real twin). There was quite a contrast in their upbringings, one family lived in the city and the other in a very rural setting. 25 years later, a colleague of one of these men saw a man in a shop who looked exactly like her colleague, and from there, the whole story unravelled, having a huge impact on everyone involved. It was a bit of a goldmine for researchers who obviously couldn’t set up such a situation as an experiment, but could study the twins in terms of nature vs nurture. Really interesting programme- recommend!

The teenage girl might just have been fed up with that question, it’s not likely you’re the first person who’d asked

True.

I hit puberty early, my brother is 2 years older than me. So I grew as tall as him.

When we went on holiday people would ask if we were twins. I didn't mind but my brother hated it.

To be fair that poster and others have given in depth explanations of how it can happen.
