Should I buy a kindle?

I love a good book but for some reason recently I've not had one on the go. I'm hoping if I had an e-reader , which is not something I've ever owned, this would change as it would be an expensive purchase I want to make use of.

Just had a look at the range and seems you can get colour ones now? Which I like sound of.
To confirm, it's quite easy to go from one book to another with things like bookmarks etc?
Any negatives over a traditional book?

I love mine, it’s really easy to use and I prefer it to having a book for ease takes me to where I last read, reading in bed without the light in! I just love it!! The charge lasts well, I have read loads more since having one! 100% get one :)

ShakyBake · 07/10/2026 21:53

Thank you, that's the kind of push I need, think I might order tomorrow

I don't see the point in a colour one but I guess it depends what kind of books you read. The basic ones are good - back lit for reading in the dark. The e ink screen is not like looking at a phone. You can turn off the WiFi unless you are downloading a book. It's easy to switch between books and it takes you to your last read page. I have a nice cover that wakes up my kindle when I open it.

The only drawback is that you don't end up with a nice shelf full of real books. I wish you could buy physical books with the option to pay an extra 99p for a kindle version as well.

laughinglovingliving · 07/10/2026 21:55

Order today whilst it’s on special offer with the prime day!!

WhyamIinahandcartandwherearewegoing · 07/10/2026 21:56

Agree with PP, I love my kindle for late night reading!

I opted for the Paperwhite, not the colour one, it’s much more book like…

murasaki · 07/10/2026 21:56

I just use the kindle app on my tablet, but the it's a mini, so not too big.

mumof5five · 07/10/2026 21:56

Order it today, prime day finishes tonight. Well worth it.

DotDotDoorDash · 07/10/2026 21:58

I love my kindle paperwhite - it’s so convenient, it’s designed to look like paper, it’s lit so that you can read in the dark or bright sunshine and the battery lasts for ages. Definitely recommend!

Lifeomars · 07/10/2026 22:07

I love my Kindle paperwhite, the screen is non reflective so there is no dazzle reading it in sunshine, it's light, holds a charge for ages, slips in my bag and you can organise your books in collections. It's this latter function that I really love, I have history, biography, thrillers, classics, poetry, favourite authors, etc, all organised on there. Having so many books at my fingertips has meant I read more though I am a reader anyway. Owning a kindle hasn't stopped me buying physical books, i still buy art and photography books.

Just download the app onto your phone/tablet/ipad

There's really no comparison. Kindles don't give you eye strain - the back lighting is completely different, there's no reflection so they're easy to read in the sun. Plus the battery lasts for weeks and weeks.

Go for it OP, I've had mine for about 15 years and it's used every day.

I much prefer reading on my iPad, I have Apple Books too, and I prefer to have everything on one device, apart from my phone.

I wouldn’t go back to a Kindle now.

I got a kindle because I couldn't read the app outdoors on my tablet, when it was bright

murasaki · 08/10/2026 00:10

I have it on the adaptive brightness setting, but appreciate it may not work for everyone.

This. It's 2026, you don't need to buy another device when you presumably already have a smartphone. I read Kindle books all the time on my phone but haven't used my actual Kindle in about ten years!

sparklyblueberry2 · 08/10/2026 02:26

I returned mine, had the same idea as yourself, that I would read more. I realised my lack of reading was more to do with having uninterrupted time and the lack of time to get properly into a book. Reading one or two chapters at a time doesn’t work for me.

I can't read anything on the tablet or phone kindle app in sunshine whatever brightness setting it's on.

The other advantage of a Kindle is that you're not as easily distracted by incoming messages etc. or by the temptation to just browse the Internet.

I use the libby app for books borrowed from the library (reading indoors only!) on the tablet but to be honest, I don't want to cart a tablet around with me when I go shopping, it's too much additional weight. The kindle is much lighter and easier to read in a supermarket queue or on the bus/tube.

I am also thankful that the kindle books don't take up as much room in the house. We've had to do so much culling of our books. That problem only arises if you read many books though! I read over 100 last year and I'm in the 80s for this year so far. Reading that much, I need something that's easier on the eyes and e-ink is so much more restful than a tablet screen

Your place in the book is automatically saved if you switch books, although you can use bookmarks.

If you're only using it for reading text based books I'm not sure of the benefit of colour versions although you might like the covers in colour.

If you've missed the Prime day deals there's likely to be more offers for Black Friday which seems to have extended to most of November these days so not long to wait.

Or you could get one from ebay cheaply although don't go too old as some of the older versions are no longer supported.

I find a Kindle pays for itself because of 99 p offers (save books you want to read until they're on offer) or there's also Kindle unlimited.

I love mine (a 2021 version Paperwhite) it's something I would replace the same day if something happened to it.

I don't see the kindle app on tablets and phones as a suitable alternative as the screen is not booklike and you don't have the same battery life.

spicegirls1 · 08/10/2026 02:49

Get one…you won’t regret it. I love mine. And if you’re not really feeling a book, you can come out of it, and into a new one easily enough.

Missey85 · 08/10/2026 04:13

I've never really bothered I just read books on my iPad and phone I don't need a separate tablet just for books, you can still download the Kindle app to sign up for books 😊 📚

CeramicRoses · 08/10/2026 04:48

I just have the kindle app on my phone or iPad.

garlictwist · 08/10/2026 04:52

I got one for travelling as we did a big trip to South America last year and I obviously couldn’t take books. I am a convert. It’s so good and lightweight and great to read in the dark. I have a case so I can lie on my side and prop it up and not even have to hold it. I also like very long classic novels which can be very unwieldy and heavy to hold in book form but a breeze on the Kindle.

Silverbirchleaf · 08/10/2026 04:54

I read my everyday. Always thought I was a ‘real book’ person but got given one second hand and have never looked back. It’s good for reading in bed, as it’s back lit.

Join Bookbub and you’ll get recommendations for books which cost 99p, including some good books. Plus there are deals on your kindle.

Deiending in how much you read, you don’t have to join ‘Kindke unlimited’. I only do if I get a deal, as I find it’s cheaper to read four 99p/£1.99 books than spend £9 a month.

sashh · 08/10/2026 05:06

I have 2, I used to have 3 but Kindles and reading in the bath don't mix.

1 by my bed and 1 in my handbag.

I use bookbud and project guttenberg to get cheap or free books.

Bjorkdidit · 08/10/2026 05:50

Kindles and reading in the bath don't mix

That's why I got my latest Paperwhite, it's waterproof.

Prior to that I had an original Paperwhite so I could read in the dark and before that I had one of the early keyboard models.
