Anyone had American Covid yet?

Or more precisely the XFG variant / the Stratus strain.

I've heard it's nastier than the dumbed down covid I've had the last couple of times.

I don't know if we have it, but me and a few of my children have all had horrible sore throats, coughs and have lost our voices which appears to be the most significant symptom of this variant.

DrCoconut · 05/10/2026 20:09

We have covid at the moment. It's been like a monster cold with immense thirst. It gives you such a dry mouth and throat. Horrible, hoping to get back to work and school soon.

MyManinCaracas · 05/10/2026 20:11

No, but going for the COVID/flu vaccine on Thursday as I have some upcoming intl travel.

I have it now. Feel utterly wretched and have had to cancel our holiday abroad. We were meant to go tomorrow so I'm very very fed up

SpookyHalloweenDeviledEggs · 05/10/2026 20:25

Not sure if it was actually COVID but I have had what pp described

HangryHippos · 05/10/2026 20:27

Think we’ve all had it. One child and husband didn’t have it too bad but me and the baby had it horrendously and it’s taken us about 2.5 weeks to feel better.

I had something along those lines a few weeks ago. I never lost my sense of smell or taste, and never had much of a fever, but felt wretched for a week. Had a cough too. At the time I blamed ragweed allergy and the allergy medication I took to deal with it.

About two weeks later I came down with strep.

sherbetlemonade · 05/10/2026 20:33

Does the usual Covid test kit pick this new strain up? I've been feeling rotten for ten days now and tested, but it came up negative.

Doriangraysattic · 05/10/2026 20:35

Mine did. Never seen a line go so red so quickly!

Rifalo · 05/10/2026 20:36

Weve all just had it. Sense of smell still isnt totally back 3 weeks on.

BratPitt · 05/10/2026 20:37

Yes, I think the DC and I have had it in the past month. I'm finally starting to feel a bit better after 3 weeks of it, it was far worse than the ones we caught back in 2020/21. The brain fog afterwards has been awful, it really did knock me for six this time. Oh and we all had eye infections at the same time too.

FairViewRosie25 · 05/10/2026 20:38

Think we have. Flew back from italy last week and both of us have been off our feet since Tuesday

Parkmama · 05/10/2026 20:40

for those of you who have had it or currently do, how are you testing for it?

The tests probably miss about half of cases. Might be more likely to get a positive if you test on multiple days, with symptoms.

That’s interesting, DD was sick for over a week with those symptoms (and massive exhaustion).
I just had the exhaustion and a tiny bit of a sore throat, but then at the end of it I had rigors and fever (and had to check in with my doctor as I’m immunocompromised). No further issues but oh my, I’m still sleeping so much.

Oh, and I hope you all get well soon ❤️

user293948849167 · 05/10/2026 20:44

I think I had it last week, my DD and DH have it this week. It wasn’t like a normal cold, I was freezing cold and achey and all I wanted to eat was crisps.
I feel pretty much back to normal by today though

Thanks, I'll do another test then, I did the other test on Friday, but I still feel rotten so whatever it is, I still have it.

ShakyBake · 05/10/2026 20:57

Sadly yes , I had a feeling it was coming on and despite the obligatory hot lemons and high concentrate vitimin C tablets it still hit hard but only for 5 days.
What I found slightly alarming and something I've never experienced before (and sorry for TMI) was the prolonged flactulance with some lasting over 2 minutes continuous. Possibly the American naming of the virus is due to this somehow but I certainly wouldn't want it again

28dayslonger · 05/10/2026 21:00

IDK but ds has the worst cold or flu I have seen in many years. Might be Covid.

Gatekeeper · 05/10/2026 21:25

Me!! I've felt extremely unwell the last week with high temp, sweating profusely, headache, nightmares, extreme lethargy, cough, blocked nose, aching muscles and joints. All im doing is drinking loads of water and training and then going for a lie down. I did a test and like another poster it gave a positive result almost instantly

Who is still testing for Covid? Isn’t it just another cold virus we all need to deal with now? Stay at home if you need to, stay away from others, but we are five years on from ‘Covid’ being a thing.

bababamama · 05/10/2026 21:56

Been ill for a month, no idea what it is except dr said looked like tonsillitis at one stage and prescribed antibiotics but they didn’t cure anything but the sore throat.

Oh for crying out loud. An ordinary cold doesn't make you feel like this.
