Or more precisely the XFG variant / the Stratus strain.

I've heard it's nastier than the dumbed down covid I've had the last couple of times.

Ive had it. Tested as I was supposed to be seeing an elderly vulnerable relative and lost my sense of taste and smell. Horrible virus this and knocked me out for a few days.

herbaceous · 06/10/2026 12:28

Interesting. I had some kind of killer virus that gave me a sore throat, totally lost voice, and utter exhaustion that made my legs not work. But tested negative for Covid. Pretty ancient tests tho.

lasted about a fortnight.

Pretty sure I have it at the moment. Several colleagues have been off, all with the same symptoms (mild cold but crushing fatigue, fog and dizziness). I'm generally fit and able, can't currently stay vertical for more than about 30 minutes. Head swimming.

I had confirmed flu in the spring, positive swab, and this feels worse.

Can't get hold of a test as chemists are currently sold out.

We got my test kit from Sainsburys the other day. Box of 5.

OK - but your situation isn’t the norm. Why are regular people who aren’t compromised or in close contact with those who are, testing for it?

I don't think every healthy person needs to establish which respiratory virus they've caught. If the result won't change their behaviour, treatment or precautions around vulnerable people, there is no practical benefit. In my experience, we have moved away from treating the word covid as if it automatically denotes an exceptional medical emergency.

Because if what you have turns out not to be Covid, then it is something else. You might have bronchitis, pleurisy, pneumonia, TB instead for instance, and you do need to find out if you have one of those.

Incidentally, I filled in the online appointment thingy for my GP practice this morning and it told me to ring 111 for advice straight away, and to go to A&E if things don't improve very soon. So I'm not being a pansy with a cold.

Covid cases are up 28% and hospital admissions by 15%, since end of August.

Thewonderfuldollypartonsbra · 06/10/2026 12:51

Yes,last week

I was at work, finished my shift and dropped a colleague off at home

We'd just got to the end of her street when I said to dp 'I have a really weird headache'

Woke up next morning to a sore throat, banging headache,a cough and aching from head to toe

It's taken about a week to feel better and still have the cough

I think we are going to get hospitalised cases every year aren't we ?

Fair enough, I see that, but surely you’d stay away with any cold/flu type illness?

I don't see him that often. If I wake up with a itchy eyes and a streaming nose and it's not COVID he might choose to meet up anyway and just keep a distance. If it's COVID, not a chance I'm seeing him till all safe again.

Who is still testing for Covid? Isn’t it just another cold virus we all need to deal with now? Stay at home if you need to, stay away from others, but we are five years on from ‘Covid’ being a thing.

A cold virus usually doesn't leave you on a ventilator in intensive care, though, does it.

It is actually important to know what you have, because if you pass the common cold onto someone vulnerable they might be ok. If you pass this onto them (and your own symptoms may be mild!) they could actually die.

It's not much effort to get a test to see what you have.

Does the usual Covid test kit pick this new strain up? I've been feeling rotten for ten days now and tested, but it came up negative.

Same here.

Negative tests, I do feel off.

The average lateral flow test is only about 50% accurate - it will miss about half of real positives.

If you test with a lateral flow several times on different days when you have symptoms, then you might be more likely to see a positive result on one of them if you do have covid.

You can get lateral flow tests for flu too.

Yes. Never caught covid before and was vaxxed six months ago. Just due the winter one. Felt really rotten. Exhausted, thirsty, weak, shivery. Smell and taste still not fully recovered.

Words · 06/10/2026 14:24

Oh and my test came up immediately.

Oh for crying out loud. An ordinary cold doesn't make you feel like this.

Only surprised Trump hasnt put a tariff on it and sent us all a bill incase we get it

That’s interesting, DD was sick for over a week with those symptoms (and massive exhaustion).
I just had the exhaustion and a tiny bit of a sore throat, but then at the end of it I had rigors and fever (and had to check in with my doctor as I’m immunocompromised). No further issues but oh my, I’m still sleeping so much.

Oh, and I hope you all get well soon ❤️

Edited

We've all been so tired too! I the aches before the throat problems, it felt like it was in my bones. The more I think about the past couple of weeks, what I thought was just post holiday run down, might actually be something more.
My neighbours have been ill all last week too and she had to take the week off she was so exhausted, she's a nurse and very rarely takes time off so she must've felt rough. I've finally got my voice back, but am still coughing and the cold aspect of it seems to be coming back.
