Between £3.5 and 4 million a year based on industry estimates. Senior partner at a magic circle law firm.

SillyGooseyGander · 03/10/2026 13:09

I don't really discuss salaries with friends. There are a few who I know are on minimum wage (because they've said) and work full time so I have a good idea what that equates too.

None of the wealthy-appearing friends would discuss what they earn but sometimes you'll hear comments about tax band thresholds that give you a ballpark.

I have one friend who has what I would think is a very well-paying job in the city. No idea what she actually earns but I know when she was interviewing people for her assistant job, the basic salary for them was around £125k 😱 so if her assistant can expect that, I'm assuming she's on significantly more.

That's why you're not rich. I'm the same as you - I'd happily quit after one bonus, but that's not the mentality of people in those high-paying jobs. They are always hungry and driven to strive for more.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 03/10/2026 13:13

£750k–£1.55m (this is a guess) I know his best year was just under 2m

JP Morgan - he maxed out lifetime pension at 35 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

He works very very long hours and his.wife is in private banking their life isnt 100% envious and theres a lot of compromise

fumingrightnow1 · 03/10/2026 13:14

Morecoffeeneedef · 03/10/2026 13:14

You wouldn’t have time. People with these salaries are expected to work 7 days a week and never take holidays. Trust me, I’ve been there.

My highest earning person I know is me but I’m not telling ya how much haha

I don’t know anyone that earns big bucks. Maybe one or two who earn 120k plus. But everyone within my circle own their own homes, decent ish cars, socialise well and have several holidays a year.

Guidanceplease20 · 03/10/2026 13:23

I know someone that has a high income but its not earnings, hes landed gentry with a lot of family property. Ive no idea what the figure would be because he would be far too polite to ever have that conversation.

Other than him, I actually know someone on 60k.

OP didn't say 'friends and acquaintances'; she said 'person you know'.

I think my highest-paid is a dentist, with several dentists working under him (like renting a chair at the hairdressers!). He is well-paid plus he gets a cut of other well-paid dentists' salaries. Plus all his investment income, too.

lljkk · 03/10/2026 13:23

How do you define "know" ?
I'm going with "would remember my name if they saw a picture of me"

Electrician relative in California is probably taking home at least half a million $ per year as salary from his own company. Could be more. I'd never ask !!

I know way more people who have zero or very low income, no savings, live in council house, etc.

I don’t know exactly but I know a few on over 125, perhaps 3? I would say they’re maybe on £150k and their lifestyles are significantly different to mine.

Still a huge diffenrce between saying earning 700k compared to owning a hugely successful business

I'd love to a fly on the wall for a week

Lol! I said the same. However, the criteria was very specific. Needing a 1st class Oxbridge degree ruled me out immediately.

Although my friend on the big bucks barely scraped a 2:2 from Lampeter 🤷‍♀️
