Walking Boots for wide feet

YahooKangaroo · 03/10/2026 12:14

I really struggle to find comfortable shoes as I have wide feet and spend most of my time in trainers as they are soft so it doesn’t matter so much.
I am ok walking about 5 miles but would like to do more so need a sturdy walking boot.
So does anyone have any recommendations for boots that have a wider footbed? Budget considerations are less important than comfort.

Altberg do 7 different fits for different feet shape/widths.
they are pricey though and I’d want to get them fitted

Wreckinball · 03/10/2026 12:18

Altberg are great. Meindl aren’t cheap either but good for wider feet

Solamon used to do wide fit. No idea if they still do

I have Altberg boots - pricy but they will last me for many years.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 03/10/2026 13:25

Scarpa are fairly wide, but generally Italian brands are narrow, UK & US brands are broader.

Keen come up wide. Scarpa too, not quite so much but worth a try. I’d recommend going to a specialist outdoor shop to get them fitted. The staff will be able to advise on which brands & styles will suit your feet, adjust with volume adjusters & insoles and show you lacing patterns for wide feet. Meindl and Merrell are quite wide too.

If you can get to Hathersage in Derbyshire, I’d recommend Outside.
If you can get to Richmond, N Yorks, go to Altberg.

Good walking boots will be upward of £150 though.

I have very square wide feet. A few years ago I got properly fitted in Cotswold Outdoors. I was so impressed with them - they brought out 3 pairs of the comfiest and best fitting boots I'd ever tried on. I ended up with a pair of womens Meindl “comfort” wide fit. They're brilliant. There was another good pair by another make "Hanweg" which were also very good but somewhat unattractively described as "bunion fit" I would def recommend a fitting in Cotswold outdoors though - if you can go when it's not too busy.
I did nearly buy some ones from Decathlon though - they're cut beautifully for wide feet, and were very comfy. I think they were the Quechua MX 500 ones (several years ago now so might be different now).

My wide footed son has Merrell boots so maybe try those too - merrell moab 3.

MissingMyDadAlready · 03/10/2026 14:20

I'd look at barefoot friendly brands.

I have square wide feet. I have Meindl comfort fit boots too. I also have Keen walking boots which also have lots of room in the toe box. I use the Meindl boots for longer walks. I also have Keen walking trainers.

I'd look at barefoot friendly brands.

Problem with this is that lots of barefoot friendly brands, which are great for the toe box, also have the barefoot thin soles / zero heel height etc, which not everyone with wide feet wants. I’ve tried them and just didn’t get along with them at all and I didn’t really want to try the barefoot thing - i just want room for my wide feet.

Some have more “normal” soles but most don’t.

I’ve got some fairly basic mountain warehouse branded ones. This will be their fourth winter. Super comfy and hard wearing.

Glad to find another fan! My son also tried the Keen ones, I have heard they’re good for wide feet too, thanks for the recommendation.

YahooKangaroo · 03/10/2026 20:02

Brilliant thank you for all the recommendations, I do lots of walking so happy to spend around £300 as long as I can be confident they will fit. I have booked a fitting at my local Cotswold Clothing so hopefully they will sort me out.

I have awkward feet, pretty wide and square, but not a large size; I went to a big outdoor shop (possibly Go Outdoors), and tried on more or less every available boot in around the right size, including those labelled as 'Men's' till I found some that were comfortable - poor shop assistant!

I ended up with a pair of Scarpa leather boots - the particular model doesn't seem to be sold any more, but the nearest thing I could find was these
https://www.scarpa.co.uk/products/trek-gtx-walking-boot
I wear them with two pairs of thin socks or one thick.

ErrolTheDragon · 04/10/2026 00:31

Following with interest as I think I will be needing to get some new boots soon. My current ones are Berghaus which are roomy, walking shoes Merrell.

I looked at the Altberg website recently (we’d been thinking of going to Richmond) - the boots looked like they were all leather, so I was wondering how heavy and waterproof they are?

forceofhabitandnotneed · 04/10/2026 01:02

Wide-footed bloke here. I've got a pair of Hi-Tec boots from Go Outdoors that are really comfortable.

clamshell24 · 04/10/2026 03:59

Meindl comfort fit here too, prefer shoes to boots. Altberg wide are great but heavy (and waterproof). Many hikers wear trail runners now for everything- Hoka do wide fit (mens even wider) , Topo , and Innov8. Have to order online tho.

KeeepWalking · 04/10/2026 06:54

I like a wide toe box for walking boots (I often wear barefoot shoes, but not for long hikes). I'd recommend looking at Inov8 and also Topo for trainers.

Editing to add, that if you're feet are big enough, buying men's shoes or boots in a particular brand will sometimes mean a wider fit than their women's version.

unsync · 04/10/2026 07:45

Also, a source for wide socks too if possible. I'm usually barefoot and hate feeling constrained by socks. I like to wiggle my toes. Thanks.

SnapAndTap · 04/10/2026 08:04

If your feet are large enough, dont rule out men's walking boots.
DS did DoE bronze & silver in ladies walking boots, as they fitted his narrow feet better - we were very particular on accent colours!

NimbleTaupeTiger · 04/10/2026 08:08

I wear Fitville because I walk a lot but also have Morton's Neuroma so the really wide fit enables me to carry on walking with little pain. They now have a distribution centre in the UK I think so they arrive quicker too.

Iamnotavicar · 04/10/2026 08:18

It's well worth a trip to the Altberg shop at Richmond, but it's better if you book an appointment before you go. I've been twice and they always seem to be busy.

I have a bunion and a Morton's neuroma and I've successfully bought boits there. It's worth trying their insoles too.

Girlintheframe · 04/10/2026 08:25

I have wide feet too. I wear Salwewa.

‘Bunion fit’ is a separate type of shape. It’s wide across the toe box but average at the heel, so the description is factual.

bababamama · 04/10/2026 08:50

Try boys ones too, tend to run wider than women’s (or men’s if you are 6+)

bababamama · 04/10/2026 08:53

If you are in Yorkshire or can get there, altberg’s are the best, the military use them plus police, rescue orgs etc. They offer custom fit. I am coveting a pair of their custom motorcycle boots but it’s 300 miles away
