Anyone have to transfer their virginmedia email?

To one they pay for?

Is this a scam?

Not heard of this OP.

But I was a virginmedia customer for absolutely years , from when they were actually ntlworld before Virgin took them over. When I'd had as much as I could take of Virginmedia and their appalling customer service I left them and I had to change my very long standing email address because Virginmedia no longer allowed me access to it. It was a total pain in the neck and really inconvenient changing my email address with everything.
Nothing would surprise me about Virginmedia.

I'm in the process of transferring from one company to another. I have to pay 4.50 a month to keep my email address.

NerdyBird · 27/09/2026 22:48

Did virgin contact you about it? My late husband had an ntlworld address and it’s probably still the login for a few things. I’ve got access to the email account but not seen anything from virgin about this, just seen it mentioned on other platforms by people who’ve had to move! Am worried I’ll miss something and lose the email account.

titchy · 27/09/2026 22:52

Why wouldn’t you change to a free one? Virgin stopped supporting my old virgin.net email a few years ago so I switched to Gmail. Was a pain but at least it was free.

Do you mean from a virgin email address to the one they want to charge us?

It's not Virgin.

I've been told that the change to full fibre means that I cannot have a separate provider for my landline and my broadband.

I was initially told by someone at the original company that I'd still be able to keep my email name/address with the original broadband company since the networks all use the same cable/whatever.

However, once the order for changing over was sent, I was told that I'd be charged for keeping the same email address.

My contract is for two years. In the meantime, I've set up a Gmail account with a view to gradually switching everything to that.

ive got a blueyonder email address that I’ve had since I had the internet in 1998. Had Virgin until 2024 when we moved to an area of the country that Virgin don’t service.
Nothing has happened to my account. Should I be worried?

The information that I was given was that there's no reason why people shouldn't be able to access their old address. It sounds as though some companies are just monetising what they can.

The bloke I spoke to originally had told me that there was nothing to worry about - he used some kind of water running out of a pipe analogy - it's the billing department that's insisting I pay a fee.

The bottom line is unless you own the bit after the "@", then you are at the mercy of whoever does.

There is no law that requires you to ever use the email address your ISP provides for you. Except for the sole purpose of letting them know you are leaving 😀.

nolongeranutjob · 28/09/2026 12:18

My MIL is in this situation. Obviously you can just create another free email address and start using it, but she has about 20 years of stuff on the virgin one and at 92 is going to struggle, as are all her elderly friends who have her current email details. It looks like she will need to pay £65 to keep her same email address and all her messages. In her case it likely wont be a long term problem and her 3 sons don't want to have to constantly deal with issues arising from the problems of changing her to a new provider.

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 28/09/2026 13:23

They spoke about this on R4 today but unfortunately I wasn’t listening particularly so don’t know how relevant it is.

Apparently they are rolling it out so it will happen at some time. I am starting gradually to change all the accounts that use the virgin email pre-emptively you get a free year with the new provider so should be long enough to sort things out, but I'd like it sorted in advance if possible, there are just so many to do. And I have a gmail account that I have mainly used for years. I would set up a gmail now and every time you use anything change the email and advise all your friends and family of the new address, so when they get to you you will at least have sorted quite a lot without a panic.

Once they warn you, you are on a timeline (quite a long one) but at some point your email address will just stop working and you will lose access to everything if you haven't sorted it out by then.

Set up a free gmail account and move everything over to that.

My mum is in this position, losing the email she has had for many many years. She has been with virgjn since it was cabletel, then ntl now virgin.

She had been stuck with a worsening service (including a software downgrade to her TV box!) and increased prices so at least this frees her to leave.

I wonder how many other customers now feel free to leave.

Ifailed · 28/09/2026 15:31

I've had a BT email address for a long time, when I moved from them to another broadband supplier I had to pay BT to keep it, currently £7.50 per month. Ofcom were supposed to be investigating this, but nothing has come of it.

Just to add fuel to the fire, here is a story about Microsoft calmly announcing they have lost (as in you ain't never gonna see it again) a shed load of client data.

Which is the risk you take when you let Other People handle important shit.

(Last but one company I worked for would be wiped out if the were affected. That would be about 100 people looking for a job next week)

Microsoft tells nonprofits their deleted M365 data isn't coming back

Grant retirement went off the rails, so Redmond is offering affected organizations help starting over

I spoke to VM today. They are contacting people gradually, and you should have time to transfer to another provider, they have an agreement in place with Junara but I don’t think you are obliged to use them. There is a news release on their website, but the comms seem to be terrible on this. I was advised to download anything I want to save just in case!

Freshrain · 28/09/2026 16:28

I had an e-mail about the 99p thing a few months ago, and, rather than just delete it, I e-mailed VM to ask if it were a scam of some sort, but they never replied. It just seemed like a way for a scammer you get your bank account details.
I've only stayed with them and their combined extortionate price hikes and appalling customer service because I didn't have the time and energy to change everything / everyone I've had contact with since they took over telewest, however many years ago that was, but now I am doing it anyway, we will find a provider at 1/2 the price.
It has just been appallingly communicated.
There have been people asking about it in several local facebook groups too.

How do you move all your emails over? I have literally dozens and dozens.

Try hundreds upon hundreds.......

I am just going through all the e-mails I have in my inbox and folders, and contacting every one.
Then am going to have to start thinking about who I might have missed...... so when you get one from a bank, remembering what other accounts you have.... when you get one from a marketing list you are on (say tickets for gigs), trying to remember who else you like getting info from (sports or theatres etc)...... work / pension providers / dentists, Drs, optician, other medical things / groups you belong to / family and friends / utilities / insurances / your vet.
There are just SO many.

I found something on the Virgin website but now can’t find it again. We have over 25 years of mailbox so we’re currently moving all our stuff to a different provider as I’m not paying £80 per mailbox a year. I haven’t heard directly from Virgin though.

Glittertwins · 28/09/2026 20:58

We started moving some of our logins a while ago as the Virgin media mail was getting inaccessible via iPhones. It’s taken us a couple of weeks but it’s now looking like the only stuff hitting the Virgin stuff is stuff I don’t care about.
