Thick/cushioned socks that are NOT especially warm?

Does such a thing exist? I have to wear wellies at work. I hate the feel of wellies with ordinary thin socks so I wear these thick socks called Heat Holders. They cushion my feet nicely but at the end of the day my feet and the socks are very sweaty and as a result, stinky (I also only have one pair of these socks so it’s getting very annoying having to give them a quick hand wash at home every day!). I work in a pretty warm and very humid environment so you can imagine how much my wellies smell after 8hrs of my feet sweating away in them 😬

Reminds me of that little Britain sketch where the bloke asks for a picture of a disappointed horse. I hope someone can help you though!

😂 I know, it seems like an impossible challenge!

I considered insoles but I like my whole
foot to be cushioned. Just to make it more awkward.

Does it absolutely have to be wellies? I can't wear them so use walking boots/shoes instead, still prefer thicker socks but sports socks tend to be enough.

It definitely has to be wellies. I spend my day paddling around in bloody puddles and getting my legs covered in blood/bits of guts etc. Plus they’re work issued. I could ask for ankle boots but in my department, my feet would be absolutely gopping in less than an hour.

I should’ve thought the clue is in the name heat holders. Other thick socks are available. Maybe try walking socks.

Summer weight wool walking socks

Yeah it’s a pair I’ve had for years. I mainly wear them because they’re nicely cushioned. I just didn’t want to spend money on trying loads of different socks only to find that they’re just as warm. I stand all day long so some decent cushioning is a MUST, which my HH socks have (they actually have a 2.4tog rating 😂)

You can get specific welly socks

Personally I like a twin skin sock. Not cheap (I wear Sealskinz mostly) but its like a hug for your feet.

JennyChawleigh · 26/09/2026 13:11

Heat Holders are acrylic which will be why they smell. You need socks with a high wool content. I wear them on long hikes and they don't smell sweaty afterwards. I got them from the Bradford Sock Company but I think Decathlon and other outdoor clothes shop do them.

NewNameNewMeNow · 26/09/2026 13:17

I can’t see them on the website but Boots do cushioned sole socks that are very comfy and have natural fibres so shouldn’t smell as much.

NannyR · 26/09/2026 13:21

I would buy some 100% wool walking socks. Wool is naturally antimicrobial and it's great at regulating temperature.

MissConductUS · 26/09/2026 13:21

I have acrylic running socks that are heavily padded on the sole but thin everywhere else. They are not hot at all.

They are based in the US, but you can probably find them on Amazon or online shops that specialize in running shoes and clothes.

Shop Thorlo running socks for premium comfort and performance. Designed to hug your feet, they enhance acceleration and keep you running comfortably for miles.

You need Bridgedale lightweight socks. They do exactly what you need. Don’t be put off by the lightweight wording - they are cushioned.

MassiveOvaryaction · 26/09/2026 14:25

Second the Bridgedale recommendation, I have some lovely merino wool ones.

strugglinguphill · 26/09/2026 14:29

Bridgedale are brilliant, I wear wellies a lot and they are perfect

WhosGotTheKeysToMyBimma · 26/09/2026 14:29

Agree that hiking socks in some sort of wool is what you want. Wool and wool blends are very good at temp regulation.

But your feet will still get really hot as wellies are not breathable but I guess at least you can rotate socks if you have a few pairs

RuffledKestrel · 26/09/2026 14:56

I like the cushion bamboo socks from sockshop.co.uk. used them for years and they provide the comfort I need without the overheating. They are more cushioned on the sole rather than the whole sock though so I'm not sure if that's a deal breaker for you with wellies.

TallagallaPenguin · 26/09/2026 16:00

Strongly recommend cushioned merino wool socks - these Smartwool extra cushioned ones are excellent, they are great at wicking away sweat and keep your feet very comfortable for long walks; obv you have a different usage but they are really very good - comfy and great at combating sweat. A good choice if you want both padding and keeping feet comfortable and unsweaty.

Edited

This.

And I'd get some sort of breathable insoles for your wellies, either sheepskin or leather.

The problem is wellies are sweaty because they are impermeable. Your feet are going to sweat whatever you wear, so choose fibres that at least won't stink.

BertieBotts · 26/09/2026 16:07

In places like supermarkets, Primark, market stalls and so on at around this time of year, because they are marketed as stocking fillers, there are loads of these cheap socks for sale which are the really soft, fluffy type material. They are basically just knitted from stretchy fluffy yarn. They are thick and slightly warmer than thin normal socks, but they don't actually keep your feet very warm. Because they are cheap they do tend to lose their padding fairly quickly but IME they do the job of making wellies feel less hard.

Where do you work??

I think you need a new job, not new socks.

Abbatoir perhaps?

AgnesX · 26/09/2026 16:11

My DH puts charcoal insoles in his boots (not wellies sorry) and then uses thick bikers socks which have a high cotton or wool content.Good socks don't come especially cheap but they do last.
