Board games for age 4-6 that aren't tedious?

DGS is 5...very active little lad and always busy playing or being upside down somewhere which is fab, but I'd love to start playing some board games with him (I look after him and his little sister)
But...I'm not a board game fan myself and rather dreaded playing when my own kids were little. I need something not too complicated...and fun (and preferably slightly educational!) for those days when he's tired or I'm tired😁Any suggestions please?

Card games were good with my DD. Snap worked well and later Rummy. I still love that game.

Connect four.
Pairs.
Tiddly winks

Dobble is supposed to be for age 6 and above so you could try that....

Look at the Orchard Toy games. They are really good for this age. Shopping list and cake monster were favourites here.

Tummy Ache - it was a family classic over 2 generations for us!

Ophy83 · 25/09/2026 22:32

Jenga

My 5 yo loves uno card game!! And I even find it fun 🤣

My teen occasionally gets out tummy ache - loved that game. We liked some that have been discontinued by Orchard Toys such as run, run as fast as you can and 3 little pigs (lots for sale on Vinted though). We introduced UNO at 5 and even my v dyslexic child got the hang of it pretty quickly.

Orchard toys do nice games

Obeseandashamed · 26/09/2026 00:34

UNO, dobble/junior dobble, pop up pirate, junior monopoly, jenga, kerplunk & snakes & ladders.

Swizzbizz · 26/09/2026 00:38

Peaceable Kingdom games.

Admittedly I love a board game but that makes me even less interested in snakes and ladders…

Sleeping Queens and Mr First Carcassonne will both tolerate a lot of replays from me.
I like it less but watching the kids play Outfoxed is less tedious than Snakes and Ladders

I think at this age most of the games are all pretty tedious, but its a phase worth persevering through. Mine is 7 now, loves a board or card game, and is playing games that are much more adult-friendly and less tedious now.

Thinking of whats on our shelf...

Lots of Orchard Toys games. Little bug bingo is a hit for all ages. He also liked Counting Mountain and Pop to the Shops for the educational ones. Goose on the Loose is a fun and slightly silly one.

Others he was enjoying at that age (and still does) - junior monopoly, guess who, connect 4, junior labyrinth (we have the Bluey version), dominos, frustration, kerplunk.

Hes more into card games now, but evening board/card games have become part of our regular evening wind down routine

If you like Uno, Google something like 'Uno games maths instagram', there's a profile who's made all sorts of other games using Uno cards. Some really creative ones! I wish I could remember her blooming name. Her voice sounds Indian. Begins with a t...like tanusse or something.

I found the orchard games tedious OP (the kids love them though!) so introduced my kids to adult games pretty early and they're great at them now (7&5, but been playing some for years). My faves are;

Colt express
King domino
Carcassonne
Rhino hero (&super battle)
Tsuro

Once they can read and write yahtzee is fun too.

Off to Google some of these.

In our house we love finding a new, lesser known game that is a big hit - so may I take the opportunity to recommend Oh My Pigeons, and Sneaky Goose. Everyone we have played these with has immediately bought their own!

Potterwatch89 · 26/09/2026 06:29

My son is the same age and loves playing dominoes. Educational too as it's really got him understanding numbers and counting!

Sonolanona · 26/09/2026 09:25

Thank you all! Off to google these!

There's a 3 Little Pigs cooperative game called Wolfy that's great for this age.

VividDeer · 26/09/2026 09:27

At that age I only really enjoyed orchard ones. Llamas in pajamas and giraffes in scarves I remember.

Favouritefruits · 26/09/2026 09:29

Screwball scramble isn’t really educational but it’ll give you a few minutes to yourself!

Franxi · 26/09/2026 09:31

I think he’s probably a bit old for the Orchard games now (and they’re pretty dull!). Uno is fun, dobble is easy to pick up and can be played by anyone, snakes and ladders, ludo, guess who.

Fireybricks · 26/09/2026 09:32

My kids loved uno and enchanted forest at that age.

NameChange30 · 26/09/2026 09:41

My DD has just turned 6 and she's been obsessed with UNO for a while now. We have a couple of different versions and my favourite is UNO flip.

Before that she was obsessed with Go Fish, but I did get sick of it and I'm glad she moved on to UNO.

We also enjoy Dobble, it's fast-paced which makes it fun, although if you're playing it with kids with an age gap, it doesn't work very well (DS is older and way too fast for DD so she gets frustrated).

I don't know why people are recommending Orchard Toys games. We have loads of them (given to the DCs as gifts over the years) and I find them all excruciatingly dull. I'm relieved they've pretty much grown out of them now.

Race to the Treasure is good - co-operative, so everyone wins or loses together, and bears a reasonable amount of re-playing.
