Board games for age 4-6 that aren't tedious?

DGS is 5...very active little lad and always busy playing or being upside down somewhere which is fab, but I'd love to start playing some board games with him (I look after him and his little sister)
But...I'm not a board game fan myself and rather dreaded playing when my own kids were little. I need something not too complicated...and fun (and preferably slightly educational!) for those days when he's tired or I'm tired😁Any suggestions please?

Off to Google some of these.

In our house we love finding a new, lesser known game that is a big hit - so may I take the opportunity to recommend Oh My Pigeons, and Sneaky Goose. Everyone we have played these with has immediately bought their own!

The 'apologise for what pigeons brought out in yiu' made me laugh. Sounds like Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza might go down well in your house!

If you're looking for education people seem to rave about Ticket to Ride, never loved it personally, but they'll learn some geography 🤷🏼‍♀️

taco cat goat cheese pizza
geist blitz (kids are TONS better than me at this!)
cobra paw
Ok Play - this is a brilliant game
traitors tide
flip 7
frozen unicorns

also lots of card games if you play with them. Rummy and so on.

Orchard games - we’ve had loads over the years.

purpleme12 · 26/09/2026 10:13

We both loved The Game of Ladybirds and Shopping List by Orchard Toys

Played with loads and still played with even when she's really too old for them

Also Peppa Pig monopoly
And Shape Snap, also from Orchard Toys
And Dominos

We like Ticket to Ride. The "First Journey" version is simpler and good for younger players but still enjoyable for adults.

Itsthewoluff · 26/09/2026 10:48

Shopping list, monopoly junior and even uno at that age.

Itsthewoluff · 26/09/2026 10:50

Pass the bomb junior
guess who
four in a row connections
dobble

MrsJamin · 26/09/2026 10:56

Uno is fab, really is based on luck but really helps kids get used to losing and being resilient to it to go again! Has some nice basic counting too if you're interested in the maths side. Labyrinth was a great one for ages and we played this until they were in their teens. I was never very good at "playing" with my kids but we always enjoyed playing games and it teaches SO many skills as well as being fun.

Out foxed or dominoes are loved by our GS

Ive just bought the kids version for a Christmas present. My husband said the adult version is akin to monopoly and took about 4 hours to get through!

BluePumpkinSloth · 28/09/2026 13:21

My niece just got a little card game called Dino Days that she loves.

Just discovered downfall! Having a lot of fun with it.

Bimbil19 · 03/10/2026 21:00

My sons (7 & 5) will play all the games listed above but the biggest winner in our family- POO BINGO. Honestly, can't recommend it highly enough!

ACatInHellsChance · 03/10/2026 21:01

My 4yo loves board/games. He plays: dobble, Uno, snap, Orchard Toys games like bus stop, incy wincy spider, penalty shoot out, he likes guess who but he needs to be part of a team to play as he can't manage it on his own yet and gets muddled, snap, matching pairs, bingo. Me and DH both love card/board games though so we've encouraged his interest. I much prefer playing games than doing role play with my kids!

SwirlingAroundSleep · 03/10/2026 21:04

Ghost castle, don’t upset the llama and minions game of life are the top faves in our house.

stichguru · 03/10/2026 21:07

Connect 4, Dobble, Catan Junior, UNO

Yogaandcrochet · 03/10/2026 21:13

My 4 yo loves Outfoxed, and it's not too bad to play as an adult although it does get tedious eventually!

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 03/10/2026 22:22

Bugs in the Kitchen is a great board game.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 04/10/2026 10:22

Tummy Ache, Shopping list and others from Orchard Games.
Dobble is a brilliant multi generational game. Kids can genuinely beat adults.

Mufflette · 07/10/2026 10:17

My DS has really enjoyed Guess Who and junior Cluedo (he likes that there's a version you can play as a team).
