Would you cancel a Rhodes holiday over the recent gastro outbreak?

Would love to know what others would do.

Booked for Rhodes next week.

There appears to be a significant issue with gastroenteritis - possible Noro, possibly something else.

There appears to have been sewerage dumping into the sea on a greater scale than normal.

The official notification says they are checking the drinking water source.

850 were admitted to hospital in August (last year was 210)

Am I crazy to think about cancelling?

My parents came home from Rhodes yesterday and no problems whatsoever 🤷‍♀️ will you lose money if you cancel?

Thanks tbh that is what I want to hear- that I'm being daft.

Likely will lose all my money- but would still have a week off work and not be sick.

Just be really careful, only drink bottled water, hand washing etc. Don't swim in the sea of it's confirmed to be sewage related. I wouldn't cancel a holiday over this unless it was very very bad. But there's always a risk.

I have just come back and we are fine. I didn’t hear about anyone being ill.

RhodesWoes · 25/09/2026 21:32

Thanks, just all rests on my decision, thanks for replying.

I returned from Rhodes yesterday and the only thing I picked up was a cold!!! And that was from all the coughing and sneezing passengers on the plane. I was careful to wash my hands, I only dipped my feet in the sea and am fine! Oh I did get bitten to death tho! The temperature is about 27/28, absolutely beautiful at the moment!

Also after landing into Rhodes it took about 10 minutes from getting off the plane to getting in my taxi. Passport queue was quick and likewise the return through security snd passport was 10 minutes max.

Facecream24 · 25/09/2026 22:15

No, I would definitely not cancel. Go and enjoy your holiday.

I'm an emetophobe and even I'd still go.

Although I'd caveat that by saying if it was an outbreak at the hotel I was staying at (ie if I was going AI and the hotel itself was the epicentre of a Noro outbreak) then I'd cancel / see if I could change destination.

I would however stay out of the sea and take measures to keep well.

I am having the exact same wobbles - due to fly tomorrow and worried I’m going to be ill 😬 I wish my brain wasn’t such a pain 🙄

Greenhippos · 26/09/2026 07:41

I was in Rhodes earlier this month and I swam in the sea it was a fabulous holiday. No issues (a group of us went and no one had any issues).

Got a fair few mosquito bites.

Just take sanitiser and wipes if you are really concerned and take your own food onto the plane.

Disneyanddogs · 26/09/2026 15:50

I am going in a few weeks and only just heard of this outbreak, now I’m dreading it. Hope you get ok ok ☹️

BrainSoup · 26/09/2026 15:51

I’m immunocompromised and visited Rhodes with no issue last month.

Spendysis · 26/09/2026 15:59

Came home Thursday neither me or dh were unwell and wasn’t aware of anyone else in the hotel being unwell

thetinsoldier · 26/09/2026 16:25

DD and her bf went to Rhodes earlier this summer. There were people being sick in the street… She caught the bug and was ill for a couple of days. Her bf didn’t.

Itsadoglife · 26/09/2026 21:42

@thetinsoldier do you know where she stayed?

thetinsoldier · 26/09/2026 22:17

Just outside Rhodes Town, @Itsadoglife

Clare27m · 29/09/2026 20:23

I came home Sunday 27th September. I arrived with my daughter on 20th, by Monday night, we were both sick for 12hrs. Stayed in the room all day Tuesday. My stomach is still recovering now! Thankfully my daughter is ok.

Ive heard the same . Sorry she got it.

I stay on islands regularly, there is always talk about a particular hotel but never an island wide problem as severe as this.

Go in a few days, it is lose it all or go

Did you go, and are you ok?

We work so hard for this 😢

@Clare27mwhere did you stay?

Itsadoglife · 29/09/2026 22:42

@RhodesWoes currently here - same as you, I looked into it and Tui would not let me change it.

We are here now and I’m trying to enjoy myself - but it is still in the back of my mind, and I’m avoiding the north of the island at all cost as that is where the main density of people getting sick are staying 🙏🏻

Where are you staying?

FatBottomGirlz · 29/09/2026 22:47

I was super sick two weeks ago and hadn’t left my home town. It’s going around and Rhodes is no different from here. My local Asda was out of rehydration sachets totally empty shelf which tends to indicate there’s been a run on them (pun intended)
