What’s your favourite UK castle to visit?

I love a castle (and a cathedral, but that’s another thread 😀) and since I’ll be holidaying more in the UK now I’d like to hear about your favourite castles.

Mine is Conwy! It’s big, has ramparts, walkways and towers and gorgeous views. 🏰

OTOH, Despite its dramatic presence, Edinburgh castle doesn’t do much for me.

Windsor and Castle Drogo.

Lindisfarne Castle, only small but beautifully renovated and so evocative of its heyday.

My favourite is Restormel Castle in Cornwall. Its the perfect motte and bailey and to me, everything I want in a castle. We went again this year on one of the hottest days of the summer, and its very cool inside the walls (and also accessible to me in a mobility scooter).

Tintagel is a stunning location but too busy now and sets my vertigo off!

I am a castle lover too. Caerphilly castle we visited in the summer was very good and how they told the story was amazing. Elizabeth castle in jersey and Mont Orgueil also in jersey is my all time favourite. If you can travel to jersey for some castle spotting. Mont Orgueil is just the best. Edited to add castle coch in wales too

Hadn't been until about 6 years ago. Ive gone at least once a year since.
It spans Roman (has a roman tower) to WW2.

Ill have to organise some trips that can incorporate a few in one holiday!

Ooh I forgot about Trim Castle too. They lock the doors though if you do the tour and memorably when then very young Dd2 didn’t take that well and we were escorted out in shame by a very formidable guide in full regalia

Caerphilly castle is very well preserved.
I enjoyed visiting Windsor Castle, so interesting.

We can see the castle from some of our windows. Our ds proposed to his wife on one of the towers. We drive across the bridge most days it is beautiful.

Stirling Castle - has a bit of everything you would expect from a castle and glorious views. Park in the town and get the bus up to the castle.

Conwy because I’m local, followed by Rhuddlan, Harlech and Flint. Penrhyn Castle is Victorian so doesn’t count.

Where to start?So many we are spoilt for choice ! Dover Castle /Bodiam Castle to name a couple .Latter is NT .Former is English Heritage .Love Hever Castle too

Im a huge history nerd and mine and my DPs fave thing to do is visit castles. Our favourites by far are Arundel and Sudeley. Amazing.

Beaumaris and Goodrich.

Got to be honest OP, castles and cathedrals do nothing for me - I do like to ‘see’ them in the town/city landscape, but am just happy with the ‘seeing’

I went years ago and loved it, went earlier this year and it was such a disappointment,they need to up their game.

Eilean Donan and Dunnottar are my favourites

The Tower of London is probably my favourite, but I also love Bodiam and Hever in England and Caerphilly in Wales-love the wonky tower!

We did an entire holiday in Northumberland around castles .

Has anyone mentioned Craigievar Castle in Aberdeenshire?

Also Dunnottar (which I think has been mentioned and also in Aberdeenshire). Glorious, glorious castle in an amazing setting.
