What’s your favourite UK castle to visit?

I love a castle (and a cathedral, but that’s another thread 😀) and since I’ll be holidaying more in the UK now I’d like to hear about your favourite castles.

Mine is Conwy! It’s big, has ramparts, walkways and towers and gorgeous views. 🏰

OTOH, Despite its dramatic presence, Edinburgh castle doesn’t do much for me.

I don’t know if anyone has mentioned it yet but Chillingham is a hidden Northumberland gem. So atmospheric. Agree with others that Bamburgh flatters to deceive.

Castle Rising in Norfolk is another of my favourites 😄

This is my thread, I love castles. I live in North Wales so I'm well placed.

I love Conwy Castle for the way it looks, the drive up to it is fabulous and the town is pretty. I would live there in a heartbeat.

Caernarfon Castle for its sheer size and how you can just explore it. It's a full day and aching legs at the end.

Goodrich is my favourite ruin. So many details remain and the guide book brings the whole place to life in my head

My absolute favourite Castle I don't think has been mentioned yet. Dunster Castle.
I visited here on a very wet, windy, stormy day. I think the weather kept people away so I had the place to myself pretty much and the rain outside created the most memorable atmosphere. I felt like I was in a novel.

Crathes Castle - it’s just fun inside with beautiful grounds. Alnwick castle grounds and Floors castle.

Going by the locations you mention you might like Calzean ( just outside Ayr ) or perhaps you've been ?

Interested in this thread?

The last one built…… Castle Drogo. It’s lovely with beautiful views too.

Warkworth Castle but that's only because I love the area so much. Beautiful coast, friendly people & it's near Alnwick & Amble.

Wow, was completely unaware of Castle Drogo!
Cant help thinking it sounds like something out of Game of Thrones! 😀
