Traffic cone outside house on road

Is it illegal to try and stop people from parking outside your home by placing a traffic cone on the roadside outside your house? .... if i was to remove the cone to park in the space I wouldn't be in the wrong to do to so, would i? Apart from piss off whoever put it there!!

Yes it is. You don’t own the road.

IDontCareWhatMyUsernameIs · 23/09/2026 21:21

Half of my neighbours do this. I got so pissed off one day trying to park in my own street that I threw it over his garden wall. Nobody owns the road and if there are no lines, crack on. Selfish bastards drive me insane.

bababamama · 23/09/2026 21:22

Unless it’s been placed by the authorities or other authorised person go ahead!

I've seen them be put out for funerals (to save the space outside for a disabled man being picked up for a funeral) sp personally I'd check if there's a good reason, or just someone doesn't fancy walking despite no disabilities.

bigboykitty · 23/09/2026 22:01

I've driven off with cones several times and left them miles away. It's ridiculous.

Magnificentbeast · 23/09/2026 22:08

The people in the house opposite us have started putting two police cones outside their house. They have a driveway but the cones are placed on a public road space.

It’s as if people think the road space outside their house is for them personally. I don’t agree.

If it is the public highway, and if you have not applied for temporary suspension and been approved by the council (in which case there would be council notices) …. Then it is an offence for anyone other than authorised departments such as the police, councils, highways agency or their contractors to obstruct the road

MissMoneyFairy · 23/09/2026 22:27

Do you know who put it there, you could take a photo and ring the council or police to check

HexInductionHour · 23/09/2026 22:30

‘Mr Cone’ who was a neighbour in a flat I once lived in had one, we put googly eyes on it. And a cotton wool beard at Christmas.

QueenOfAccountability · 23/09/2026 22:46

I just move them onto the pavement and park

The law also doesn't agree(!) haha I'd report them for impersonating police.. got to be illegal to pretend it's police business! (Unless that is their job..?)

Sunshineandrainbow · 23/09/2026 23:58

Gosh I have seen this a few times while driving round different estates, some people seem so entitled.

mondaytosunday · 24/09/2026 00:02

They only do it around here if expecting a delivery or moving truck, though when I moved it I got (and paid) for council permission to reserve the space in front of my house. Sometimes builders will do this too. It’s not like someone drives off to work in the morning and puts a cone out to reserve their spot - that is ridiculous.

LibertyLily · 24/09/2026 00:50

We have two neighbours who do this regularly (or rather just one these days as the first person's cone went missing a few months back) in order to guarantee a parking space outside their house. Both have lived here longer than anyone else (1980s and 1990s) so seem to think they own the road.

The one (known as Cone Man locally) who still has his, has a wife who uses a wheelchair, but they don't have a disabled bay. We just move the cone onto the pavement and park there if necessary.

Hilariously another neighbour is called Mr Coney (real name!) but he doesn't have a cone 🤣

FullOfLemons · 24/09/2026 01:48

I’d leave it a day and see what happens

If they have a skip, or a pallet of bricks coming, then I’d be sympathetic and let them keep the space. I would expect to need building work done at some time and would hope they would do the same for me.

If they are just reserving the space to park their car then I’d consider them CFs and remove the cone.

Whorulestheroost1 · 24/09/2026 01:56

The home owners on a road leading to the back of my estate all do this. They are pissed off with local hospital workers using the road. There is a sign that says 'no hospital parking' but it is not enforced (how can it be - who knows who are hospital workers or not?!) no other signs - and so the residents have taken it into their won hands. Road looks a right mess with cones everywhere.

mathanxiety · 24/09/2026 01:59

Maybe the person who did it recently moved from Chicago?

IDontCareWhatMyUsernameIs · 24/09/2026 09:56

Not only do our neighbours put traffic cones out, many of them also leave their bins out all the time, half on and half off the road. They get moved too. So selfish 😡😡😡

😂did they just put it back? Or was it not seen again?

LorenaWood · 24/09/2026 10:08

Like others I've had this and was so mad once I got out of the car and kicked one and hurt my toe not realising quite how heavy they are 😂 this made me even more mad so I threw it into the river which when I'd calmed down made me feel so bad I spent several weekends voluntarily litter picking 🤦🏻‍♀️

ItsOnlyMee1 · 24/09/2026 10:15

Move traffic cone, park, place traffic cone back on the top of your car.

We have something very similar except he puts them across the road ie opposite his driveway. We had a polite discussion about it and he insisted it was so that he could reverse out and a car parked opposite made it harder for him (poor lamb). When it was pointed out that he'd no business to do this - and maybe learn to reverse park - he said our local councillor had told him it's ok!! I don't disbelieve that, unfortunately.

I spirited one lot away - more appeared. Reported to council, they picked them up - more appeared. Ad infinitum apparently.

It seems to be getting more common, certainly in this area,or I'm just noticing it more as it pisses me off.

daffodilandtulip · 24/09/2026 10:36

They use wheelie bins around here.

No, I don’t see any evidence of them being police. Even then I can’t see that being a perk of the job!
They seem to have between 2-4 cars on the go. Sometimes doing work on them.

I think its the Man who lives at the house... he parks his car along the pavement/roadside and the places the cone in front of where the space is in front of his car. I can only assume he doesn't want his car blocked into his space if hes trying to drive away, as theres always a car parked behind his car.

It a street I park in nearby my work, so I worry that if I ever moved it, and parked there id end up being confronted by him, which is the last thing I want. But theres times ive struggled to get parked and theres the cone just sitting there taking up a parking space.
