Nice lamp?

madaboutpurple · 22/09/2026 09:43

You could get a lovely perfume.

BlueBlueBerries · 22/09/2026 09:44

What do you need? If you don’t have much money, you can also use at Waitrose for a good shop. Maybe stock up your cupboards.

DeedlessIndeed · 22/09/2026 09:46

I do like their towels and bedding, and think an amazing nights sleep is the best thing to spend your money on.

But I actually think the quality might have dropped a touch in recent years.

I do love their hungarian goose pillows though, you could get one of those.

If money was tight and I didn't need anything I'd just use it for food shopping at Waitrose.

This.

JL used to have extended warranties (included in the price, not at extra cost), so an appliance could be an option. Personally, I'd only buy something from there if it was cheaper than anywhere else.

Years ago we got a JL voucher and bought a raclette set. We do use it occasionally for entertaining, but about a month after buying it, lidl had one for about 1/4 of the price!

omghereistrouble · 22/09/2026 10:10

well I am guessing that you were given it as a gift so maybe get something that you could keep to remind you of them and show them too.
i would suggest a lamp? picture? ornament? vases maybe?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 22/09/2026 10:12

Is there anything you actually need?

Ooohaaahjustalittlebit · 22/09/2026 10:18

A heated blanket? (If they sell them).
Some bedding (always lifts a room)

OhHobnobs · 22/09/2026 10:20

A fuji instax mini camera amd some mini film for it.

Totally unnecessary but nice to have!

JustWalnut · 22/09/2026 10:24

I'd buy a Lego flower bouquet to build and display in the new house. Flowers

ImogenBrocklehurst · 22/09/2026 10:48

A decent kitchen knife?

marycries · 22/09/2026 11:58

Thanks all. Will look at lamps. Money is not super tight but not abundant either so I'd like something that will last. Was thinking of a bedspread/quilt but they all seem quite ordinary and £90! £200 for the nice ones.

(If anyone knows anywhere to get good value bedspreads that would be a separate thing!)

And it wasn't a gift - just a voucher for signing up to a certain broadband deal.

online home store is great for bedding

ProfessorInkling · 22/09/2026 12:01

A heated airer - if you are short on drying space indoors. They have a small-ish one for £100 I've got my eye on.

Lillers · 22/09/2026 12:11

Honestly if I didn’t have anything specific I needed, I’d probably hold onto it with a view to using over Black Friday sales for Christmas gifts.

5289843DM · 22/09/2026 12:49

For bedding, I've often just bought 100% cotton/Egyptian cotton from sainsburys, tescos on dunelm. All going strong and have washed well for years.

Bjorkdidit · 22/09/2026 12:52

Only on Mumsnet could someone suggest spending £90 on a kitchen bin or lamp when someone has said they want to make the best use of the money they have. You could get nice versions of both those items from Ikea for about £30 for both.

I'd use it in Waitrose if you have one nearby as it will go quite far if you're careful. If not, wait until Black Friday or the sales and hopefully by then you'll have identified something that you actually need.

sherbetlemonade · 22/09/2026 13:02

Agree with the pp about Waitrose. You could buy a few lovely food items, then use the rest of it to stock up on a load of basic things as well. I used to get a £100 John Lewis gift card from work every year at Christmas and that's what I did with it.

marycries · 22/09/2026 13:45

Thanks all. I guess the thought was something I wouldn't usually be able to buy that would last. I can afford my food shopping. But I'm not sure anything in JL is actually worth the increased price? I also wondered about a smoothie maker or something that would make a big difference to the look of a room, eg a bedspread. But good idea about the christmas presents/black friday.

But if you spend it on groceries in Waitrose, that frees up £90 that you can spend wherever you like. So you don't have to worry about something being more expensive than you'd normally buy, because you're free to spend the money anywhere.

I would do this. Spend the £90 voucher on food and then look around for something you want and you’re not confined to JL with the food money you have saved.
