Which UK cities or towns have lovely centres worth visiting?

What city has a great city centre and possibly worth a visit (in response to the other thread about the worst city centres), but towns included too.
Edinburgh obviously, Carlisle is being spruced up and has a cathedral (it became a cathedral in 1133, many restorations but last was in 19thC)), smallish museum and art gallery, a castle and the station all within a short walk of the centre. The centre has lost quite a few of the usual shopping venues but still has a large M&S.
Beverley still has a nice old market town feel. The minster is impressive and St Mary's Church is lovely. One or two nice clothes shops.
Any other suggestions?

Other than Edinburgh & parts of London I'm struggling! St David's in Wales but that's probably not the sort of city centre you're meaning - very lovely though.

Actually Belfast was looking pretty good last time I was there.

I guess it depends what you're looking for. If it's big, vibrant cities I think all of the big cities have a lot to offer (Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow, Cardiff).
But for pretty, smaller cities I'd say York, Bath, Salisbury, Cambridge, Oxford.
There are plenty to choose from!

Winchester is lovely a Cathedral, the west tower and the great hall are the historical bits. Still a good range of shops with a mix of independents and nationals. The cathedral cafe is a nice place for lunch good value they do a great soup each day which is made of whatever the local veggie farmers have too much of.

Lichfield is lovely and very compact. The cathedral is beautiful and there are lots of cafes and a few nice shops still. It also has great charity shops!

I agree with this in particular Newbury has an independent department store.

Smokeywater · 22/09/2026 07:11

I think we’re lucky in the UK because there are loads and loads of quirky, ancient pretty bits of towns and cities. There’s obvious ones like Windsor, or Winchester or Bath but also oodles of others - even just in the SW…

Sidmouth
exeter
totnes
truro (Cornwall is swimming in pretty fishing villages, Fowey, Looe, st ives, boscastle etc etc)
bristol
tavistock

even places like Plymouth have ancient bits like the Barbican…

and the NE? Alnwick Morpeth Harrogate York Whitby Newcastle (I could go on and on)

genuinely so many fascinating and nice places
