Which UK cities or towns have lovely centres worth visiting?

What city has a great city centre and possibly worth a visit (in response to the other thread about the worst city centres), but towns included too.
Edinburgh obviously, Carlisle is being spruced up and has a cathedral (it became a cathedral in 1133, many restorations but last was in 19thC)), smallish museum and art gallery, a castle and the station all within a short walk of the centre. The centre has lost quite a few of the usual shopping venues but still has a large M&S.
Beverley still has a nice old market town feel. The minster is impressive and St Mary's Church is lovely. One or two nice clothes shops.
Any other suggestions?

I agree with this in particular Newbury has an independent department store.

Ours in Bath ( jollys ) is reopening in spring 2027 owned by the same company as the Newbury one. It’s been on going for 18 months!

Chester is really nice.

Richmond (Yorkshire, not London) if you dont mind a small town

Richmond upon Thames is also gorgeous.

KnickerlessParsons · 22/09/2026 23:33

Belfast. Just back from a week there and it’s lovely.

Bath ( Christmas markets are insane though)
Chester
Shrewsbury ( The market is ace along with the “market cafe” for cake and coffee! )
Lytham St Annes
Bristol
York ( Castle museum is fabulous)

Of the big cities I know, Bristol. Liverpool, Belfast, Glasgow, Edinburgh are definitely worth visiting.

Of the smaller cities I know Chester, York & Cambridge are lovely, although touristy.

London

Meandthegherkin · 23/09/2026 01:08

I spent a great day wandering around the west end of Glasgow a few months ago. Got off the train at Annieshall and just headed off on random directions. Lots of nice places.

blueshoes · 23/09/2026 01:38

Arundel

Tickingcrocodile · 23/09/2026 01:56

Norwich, Lincoln, Ely, Cambridge, Chichester for cities.
For towns there must be loads. I can think of Arundel, Bosham, Midhurst, Lewes in Sussex. Saffron Walden, Lavenham, Bury St Edmunds, Dedham, Woodbridge in Essex/Suffolk. Other places I've liked: Shrewsbury, Ludlow, Stratford upon Avon, Burford, Buxton

Gingerkittykat · 23/09/2026 02:03

Stirling is a small city, so it doesn't have the crowds of somewhere like Edinburgh. It is beautiful, with a big castle, thriving shops, art centre at the Uni and nice places to eat.

Bradford

🤣

I'll always have a soft spot for Bradford - I spent the most fun years of my life there - but I assume that's a joke?

piscofrisco · 23/09/2026 03:39

Stamford

Roselilly36 · 23/09/2026 06:29

York is stunning, we went for the first time this year, loved it. Would recommend. Yorvik, Yorks Chocolate Story, Minister, The Shambles.

Harrogate.

Stamford is lovely too.

Cotswolds villages are very pretty.

Cheddar Gorge is beautiful, as you drive through it’s like being in another world.

Wells is gorgeous, lovely small city, and a must visit if you are a fan of the Simon Pegg Hot Fuzz film!

Windsor historic

Norwich beautiful cathedral, elm hill, Tombland etc. Norfolk Broads beautiful villages. Wroxham. Wells next the sea, fantastic beach with lovely beach huts.

Southwold, end of the pier show, very imaginative, beautiful seaside.

Bury st Edmund’s, is a favourite of ours too.

AndresyFiorella · 23/09/2026 06:36

Durham is the most beautiful city in the country imho.
Also Newcastle, Cambridge, Oxford. I feel very lucky to have lived in all of them!

Smokeywater · 23/09/2026 06:53

This is very cheering, so many places.

Inverness has the River Ness running through the centre as it empties into the Moray Firth - lovely river side walks.
New Lanark is a preserved 18th century mill village about an hour from Edinburgh or Glasgow in the Clyde Valley and a World Heritage Site - definitely worth a visit.

Richmond upon Thames is also gorgeous.

True not a city though. I’m quite fond of next door Kingston Upon Thames too tbh but it’s not got many city attractions, more shopping and parks etc.

Fiddlesticks1 · 23/09/2026 08:23

Lincoln. Beautiful cathedral, a castle. Steep Hill which is incredibly steep but full of independent shops. Just a great city to visit.

Liverpool
Conway
A village but Tutbury

Liverpool is class.
I want to go to Tutbury - I love a good tut.

BlackeyedSusan · 23/09/2026 16:13

Fairly local to me: Coventry is on the improving list. Two large churches, cathedral and cathedral ruins. Theatres. A couple of large museums and a couple of smaller ones. Children's park in the city centre but it's probably cut off now due to a big demolition building site. Fountains, running water and planting. Not very good for shopping. Lots of students. Still got patches of not so good bits but lots of redevelopment going on. A couple of pretty parks near the centre but with caution. (Just inside or outside the infamous ring road) It's being worked on.

Thezookeepersneice · 23/09/2026 16:19

York, Shrewsbury, Durham all gorgeous. Loads of great culture and stuff to see and do in Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle.
