Your ‘emergency supplies/stockpile’.

Has anyone else started stashing a few things away in the event of some kind of ‘national emergency’ and if so, what sort of things are you storing?

I’m certainly not going to turn into a prepper but as I have plenty of storage space, I’ve got two big plastic boxes filled with dried goods (rice/pasta etc) and then some tinned stuff. I’ve also stocked up on batteries, candles and matches and I bought a solar charger. And oh, got two 5 litre bottles of water.

The temptation to go a bit nuts and plan for Armageddon is high! 😂😂 But I’m being sensible and just having enough for the basics to keep us going for about a week. I’m also cycling through the food so it doesn’t get wasted - use a tin of beans and then replace it etc.

As for "evidence" the last thing anyone is or should be doing other than on anonymous forums is posting about what they've got in for emergencies. So what kind of "evidence" you want I have no idea. I do know sales of a lot of items such as gas stoves, canisters, torches, etc have shot up but I only know this because a relative of mine processes sales data for a certain online sales site . You are not going to get Joe Bloggs going on your local news to share with his neighbours photos of all his stores. That is definitely worthy of an eye roll.

Am I the only one that would rather leave the country when it all kicks off instead of hunkering down with a stockpile? Weirdly I was in Europe last week and spent some time on social media, I didn’t read anything about prepping or stockpiling… as soon as I got home it was all over my social media feed

Exactly and why u am holding off. My family are my priority, as is everyone else's. I also don't think I should jump when told. I want to know why it might be necessary (when a side-step is equally effective iyswim)

As you have been told, photos of the government leaflet are in the thread gallery. That is the evidence if, by evidence, you mean "the basis for the need", which is what you say here you are waiting for.

You don't read about it in Europe because it's actually pretty normal there.

Yes, of course I would rather leave the country to some unnamed nirvana, but it probably won't be possible.

Recent situations I have dealt with, such as flooding preventing me leaving my village fir four days, beast from the east pretty much the same, COVID preventing most travel .....have eliminated this possibility when issues arise.

I don’t know why you wouldn’t do it unless you are desperately poor or literally have no storage. It’s shooting yourself in the foot rather to refuse to take any action to “get one over” on the government. Then if there’s an issue with the supply chain you have no food or water and have to explain that to your kids.

No camping stove is safe for use indoors, but you can stick it by an open window.

I've thrown out every wind-up radio and torch I've had - they're great for novelty value (ooh, look, I'm making electricity!) but performance is crap ime. I've been building up my rechargeables - I've now got a radio that keeps its charge pretty well, and am working through Amazon's selection of rechargeable LED lights to find ones that don't need topping up all the time - so far, it's about a 50% success rate.

I would definitely have solar panels and, ideally, a full-on home battery, if I didn't live in a tiny rented flat! I'm talking myself out of buying one of the portable batteries, as it wouldn't keep house stuff going very long. I've got little power banks for the phone.

Due to tiny flat problem, I only have 10l bottled water. I've got some sterilisation tabs and paper filters, on the basis that it was good enough when I did my D of E so is probably OK in extremis. Were I an actual prepper, I'd have invested in a carbon-silver filtration system. I am not that person ... yet.

Where I live, we had one power cut in 12 years. And three in the last four months, one of which was 8 hours. The water's been off twice in two months, and I've just received notification of another possible issue. I am not complacent.

There was an interesting episode of the Radical podcast on this. That totally changed my view from a “it’ll be fine what’s the problem” sceptic to the opposite. Dh wants to get the solar panels and the battery that charges from them. Then you are insulated from gas and electric issues going forward. Our most intelligent friends have quietly done this.

So it is a non event/non news nonsense

I have a shit Ton of flavoured water as it’s the water ds18 will drink, so I go to bookers every month to stock up, I also buy ahead for my drinks at work. We also buy a months worth of sausages and hashbrowns 😅 we always bulk as 7 of us in house and it’s actually cheaper. Got enough pasta variations to feed an army, same with rice. Beans, pasta sauce. Loads of Iceland chicken strips/chunks aswell. Cheese bites…
