Your ‘emergency supplies/stockpile’.

Has anyone else started stashing a few things away in the event of some kind of ‘national emergency’ and if so, what sort of things are you storing?

I’m certainly not going to turn into a prepper but as I have plenty of storage space, I’ve got two big plastic boxes filled with dried goods (rice/pasta etc) and then some tinned stuff. I’ve also stocked up on batteries, candles and matches and I bought a solar charger. And oh, got two 5 litre bottles of water.

The temptation to go a bit nuts and plan for Armageddon is high! 😂😂 But I’m being sensible and just having enough for the basics to keep us going for about a week. I’m also cycling through the food so it doesn’t get wasted - use a tin of beans and then replace it etc.

So many assumptions. I am trying to understand this unnecessary stampede.

I am literally doing what I like (which is asking genuine and sensible questions to something that I don't understand eg freezer full of meat... gas stove but it may cause house fires... some people don't have the £ or space to buy all the extra. Don't assume people who aren't prepping can't or don't want to. It is the prepping part I am struggling with - seems Covid selfishness and anxiety driven (to me)

As I said, you do what you like. It'll be people like you causing anxiety and being selfish when it does actually come to it. And we don't have much money, I've used the last I had put away because I have someone to look after with serious health conditions.

@LemonLass I really don't understand the point you're trying to make.
Is it because its something the government have belatedly suggested (and any sensible person has been doing for a long time)? Just because the government suggested it does that make people who do it 'sheeple'?
If you're so wary of what the government is saying why are you so happy to think they'll be there to provide you with everything you need if a cyber attack ( or a storm) takes out part of our infrastructure?

If all electric is off, with good management frozen food will be usable for a couple of days - non meat longer.

Keeping stuff cool is tricky fur sure, so a stock of food that doesn't need that is good - dried, tinned, jars etc. that's exactly what prepping is looking at.

But not all emergencies are the same. I did get trapped in the village in flooding in 2024, no electric or anything went off but it was good to have food in as deliveries to the local shop stopped and I couldn't get out of the village by car, foot or bicycle. I guess a tractor maybe could have....

In the beast from the east it was similar, though the shop was getting some supplies.

I did not say "it could never happen here". I have the upmost empathy for anyone displaced. You assume my heritage. I am not anxiety-driven but driven by the desire to understand why this knee-jerk reaction causes this kind of division. We learn by asking questions. You appear to assume so much

Most of us aren't storing frozen food to rely on. It's cupboard stores.

And this is cold out of a packet? Not goading (many people assume), am trying to get a grip of what I should prep for, for how long, what that hell could look like and if I even want to do that

You don't need a garden for a camping stove in fact, but it is best to have a co2 monitor and keep a window open.

I did stop and think. I reorganised our extremely limited finances to prepare us for emergencies. I cancelled a couple of uneccesary subscriptions. I've struggled all my life and its been harder since I've had to be the sole breadwinner. So I know damn well where I come in the scheme of things.

Again, I have missed this memo. Where is everywhere? Because asking questions on what I thought to be a relevant thread that could inform me has turned into a defence scenario, rather than detail...

The govt suggested it, they didn't differentiate between where people live.

Towns may be more vulnerable to physical attacks and looting/rioting. Rural areas more at risk of being cut off I guess. Though plenty of towns flood and snow falls willy nilly!

How much snow is being predicted if townies might be cut off like that?

Government websites. Articles in every national newspaper.

You have to make an effort not to see it if you do even completely basic research.

I think you have access to the internet so I suggest you do some research, you can specifically look into your own area, can't you?

Maybe start by looking at the issues predicted around unpredictable (which is the whole point!) weather scenarios brought by el nino which could last up to three years.

Again, this isn't an arsey question, it is out of genuine wish to understand. How would you decide who is "worthy"? I don't want to assume as that is pointless
