Term time, school day jobs. Anyone have one? What is it and how do I go about finding one?

I have been an early years teacher and a copywriter in my career. But neither are actually term time, school day jobs even though both sound like they should be!

I have considered things like lunch time supervisor jobs, but they’re few and far between and also not very well paid.

So I’d love to know: if you have a job where you work term time and during the school day, what is it?

How do I get one of those?!

(Just to add: when I worked in the early years I’d start at 8 and finish at 5 - and was exhausted - and when I worked as a copywriter I would take every single gig offered in case I never got another and they were often not at home. Plus the industry looks awful right now and I’ve been out of it for a while so don’t like my luck there!)

I work for our local police force in a civilian role, from home with the exception of one day a month, and during school hours. Lots of forces have flexible working options.

The mums I know who work school hours are teacher assistants or work as school receptionists.

School meals kitchen hours are usually 9.30 to 2 term time

Catsonskis · 17/09/2026 14:58

One of the admin team in my hospital have a term time only contract and work 3 days school hours and then 2 days long days

xyzandabc · 17/09/2026 15:02

Large secondary school, started out as an admin assistant 20 hours a week term time only, worked through a few roles now 35 hours a week term time plus 3 weeks in the holidays.

Look on your local council websites, my new term website, or just look at local school/college websites for vacancies in schools.

I was thinking about this! I’m quite tempted by it.

When I said lunch time assistant, it’s more in a preschool setting when the other teachers need a lunch break it’s someone who can take over. I don’t want to work in the kitchen - not something I’d be good at!

I work term time only in a school. Search your local councils website for vacancies that’s where they’re usually listed. For example if you’re in Birmingham let’s say, google Birmingham city council jobs

Civil service. I worked part time( school hours), term time for years when my DC were school age.

MakingforMindfulness · 17/09/2026 15:22

I'm a TA and work 8.30 to 3.30

Seagulldancing · 17/09/2026 15:23

I knew loads of women who worked term time, school hours. But the roles were with their long term employer and they negotiated it. Apart from a Ta or lunch supervisor, ive never seen school hours term time advertised.

dizzydizzydizzy · 17/09/2026 15:23

Freelance copywriting? I used to do that when the DCs were school age.

Judellie · 17/09/2026 15:27

Not term time but to fit with school hours, wouldn't the likes of Premier inn etc have housekeeping teams sorting rooms between 10 and 2? All hotels I suppose.

Thunderpunt · 17/09/2026 15:30

If you’d consider catering work then sixth form colleges are a good shout. They often have on site canteens plus coffee shops (Starbucks franchise etc) DH has several ppl working for him, some do 4 hours a day, some do 6 hours, term time only (usually 190 days a year) pay rate isn’t great, around £13-£15ph for catering assistants, but it’s easy work and you get the flexibility of school hours.

isitfridayyetttt · 17/09/2026 15:44

Look on eteach. There are some term time admin jobs on there. Probably a lot of competition but that’s the job market in general.

Shinyhappyapple · 17/09/2026 15:53

I worked part-time, term-time for a while. I worked for the education department within my local council. At the time, they offered a lot of term-time admin roles as there was less work to be done during school holidays. That particular department disappeared with cuts about 15 years ago and although everyone is entitled to apply for flexible working, I’m not sure whether any roles there are advertised as term-time any longer.

Unfortunately I think that’s one of the roles which is disappearing due to AI.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 17/09/2026 15:55

I was a Science Technician in a secondary school. However the school has since cut down from three (one for each discipline) to one, so I'm not sure how prevalent these jobs are now.

Same here.

madaboutpurple · 17/09/2026 15:59

I'm sure Amazon offer school hours jobs and allow staff to have the school holidays.

JulesJules · 17/09/2026 16:01

Have you got local universities? They usually have a range of term time jobs, the terms tend to be shorter than schools. All sorts of admin jobs, receptionists, accommodation managers, events, cafes, estates etc. They usually have a job vacancies area on their websites.

FirmSnake · 17/09/2026 16:02

I'm a technician in a secondary school. I'm part time but my hours are between 8.30 and 3.30pm. Although I have to pay wrap around whether I finish at 3.30 or 5.30 so 🤷...
If you want to work within school hours to do pick ups and drop off, you'll struggle I think. The canteen ladies are the only ones doing those hours at my school.

Autumnallaround · 17/09/2026 16:04

Exams officer. That's different from invigilator.

I organise everything to do with our GCSEs and ALevels, plus international exams where relevant (boarding school).

I work 35hrs a week term time. BUT I do longer days on exam days, but I didn't at my last comprehensive school.
